Dear MAGNAT Customer,
Congratulations on your fine new loudspeakers and thank you very much for choosing MAGNAT! You have
made an excellent choice. The high-quality speakers produced by MAGNAT are renowned all over the world.
Please study the instructions and information below carefully before using your new loudspeakers.
MAGNAT CINEMA ULTRA
The Dolby Atmos-compatible universal add-on speaker is a part of the Magnat Cinema Ultra loudspeaker
family. Other models include the LCR 100-THX front speaker, the RD 200-THX dipole surround sound speaker
and the SUB 300-THX subwoofer.
All of the models can also be used outside the Cinema Ultra range as extremely powerful home cinema com-
ponents
ABOUT DOLBY ATMOS
Dolby Atmos is a new audio standard for cinemas and home cinemas. Atmos brings a third dimension into
the soundscape for the first time in the form of treble channels. These treble channels are emitted either by
separate add-on speakers like the Magnat AEH 400-ATM or via add-on speakers integrated into the front
and rear speakers. For even distribution of the treble sound field that is not locatable for the human ear, the
add-on loudspeakers emit their sound into the room in the direction of the ceiling. The reflection of this sound
then reaches the listeners, giving the impression of a three-dimensional soundscape.
The AEH 400-ATM can, in addition, be switched to direct emission and then be used as a wall or ceiling speaker.
This provides various options for expanding the existing home cinema system.
Please note that, for a true Dolby Atmos experience, both the source material (e.g. Bluray) and the electronics
(e.g. AV receiver) have to meet the Dolby Atmos audio standard.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Please always use a good quality loudspeaker connection cable from an audio dealer. To prevent impairment
of sound quality, we recommend cables with cross-sections of at least 2.5 mm² for lengths up to 3 m and at
least 4 mm² for lengths above 3 m.
Always turn off the amplifier or receiver before connecting or disconnecting loudspeaker cables. Place the
loudspeakers in their planned positions and cut the cables to the right length. The cables for both channels
should always be exactly the same length.
Strip 10 – 15 mm of insulation from the ends of the cables. Twist the ends – this is much better than tinning
them with solder – insert them in the terminals and tighten the terminal screws firmly (fig. 1). Loudspeaker
cables with CE-compliant banana or single-pin plugs (4 mm) or forked fittings can also be used.
For good sound it is imperative that the cables must be connected in such a way that the speakers are “in
phase”. This means that the black negative terminals on the speakers (-) must be connected to the negative
(-) terminals on the amplifier, the red positive (+) speaker terminals to the positive (+) amplifier terminals. To
make this easier one wire of most speaker cables is marked with a coloured strip or a ridge in the insulation.
Before switching on the system double-check all your connections and make sure that the terminal screws
are tight and that there are no short circuits caused by stray wire filaments – this could cause serious damage
to your amplifier!

GENERAL REMARKS CONCERNING SETUP
The loudspeakers offer several options for wall mounting. Wall-mounting brackets are fitted on the rear.
Alternatively, the speakers can be mounted using a VESA standard wall bracket. Distance between the hole
100x100mm M4.
Four self-adhesive rubber feet are included for the front speaker for setting up on an existing loudspeaker or
shelf. When placing the unit on top of another loudspeaker, please check first whether the top of your exist-
ing front speaker is big enough to accommodate the Magnat AEH 400-ATM. An area of around 280x188mm
is needed. For secure positioning, all four feet of the add-on speaker must be in contact with the top of the
front loudspeaker. Please always make sure that the main axis of the integrated coaxial loudspeaker has a
clear line of sight to the ceiling without any sound-absorbing or reflecting obstacles. Only in this way can the
desired sound reflection via the ceiling function as wished.
POSITIONING THE SPEAKERS
The optimum positioning of the speakers depends on their use:
- on-top speakers for Dolby Atmos:
One AEH 400-ATM is placed on top of each of the existing front speakers (Fig. 2). If this positioning is not
desirable or the area available is not sufficient, the Atmos speakers are placed in the immediate vicinity of
these locations.
When using four AEH 400-ATM’s and direct emission speakers in the surround sound area (no dipoles), the
rear Atmos speakers are placed on top of the surround sound speakers or as close as possible to them (Fig. 2).
If this is not possible, the rear Atmos speakers are placed near the rear wall at the same height and the same
distance from each other as the front pair. The baffles must always be set at an angle to point into the room.
Please ensure for this operating mode that the switch on the connector terminal is in the “Atmos” position
shown on the type plate.
The Magnat AEH 400-ATM has a matching size and look to fit perfectly on top of the Cinema Ultra front
loudspeaker LCR 100-THX.
- Ceiling speakers for Dolby Atmos:
Two AEH 400-ATM’s are secured to the ceiling of the room using VESA brackets (100x100mm, M4). The
optimum position is slightly in front of the listening position (approx. 80° in relation to the listener) and the
distance between the two ceiling speakers should correspond to the distance between the left and right front
speakers (Fig. 3a/b).
When using four AEH 400-ATM’s as ceiling speakers, these are also placed at the same distance from each
other as the front speakers, but further to the front and rear. The optimum location in relation to the listening
position is at an angle of 45° and 135° in relation to the listener (Fig. 4a/b). The baffles must always be set at
an angle towards the listener. Please ensure for this operating mode that the switch on the connector terminal
is in the “Direct” position shown on the type plate.
For acoustic reasons, we would advise against mixed operation of indirect emission (ceiling reflection) and
direct emission.
- Wall or ceiling speakers for other uses:
The AEH 400-ATM is also suitable as an add-on speaker for other audio formats and as a presence or wide
speaker for modern AV amplifiers and receivers. With regard to the optimum positioning for these operating
modes, please see the user guides and manufacturer recommendations for the respective devices.
For the AEH 400-ATM, we generally recommend using the VESA bracket for wall or ceiling mounting in these
operating modes. Please make sure that the baffles of the add-on speakers are always pointing into the room
towards the listener and that the switch on the connector terminal is in the “Direct” position shown on the
type plate.

AUTOMATIC CALIBRATION
A lot of modern AV amplifiers and receivers provide the option of automatic system calibration via micro-
phone. Calibration is advisable as the levels and distances of all the loudspeakers are determined automati-
cally and, depending on the calibration system, the frequency responses of the connected speakers are also
corrected in order to compensate for poor room acoustics. Please read the user guide for your AV amplifier or
receiver in this regard.
MAINTENANCE
The lacquered surface is best cleaned with a mild household cleaner. On no account use furniture polish or
similar products on these surfaces.
HOW TO AVOID DAMAGE TO YOUR VALUABLE SPEAKERS
All MAGNAT loudspeakers are designed and built for optimum sound reproduction with the tone controls in
the central position – i.e. with “linear” amplifier output. Turning up the bass and treble controls too far delivers
more power to the woofers and/or tweeters, and at high volumes this can actually destroy the speaker units!
If the output of your amplifier is significantly higher than the rated power handling capacity of your speakers
extremely high volumes can physically destroy your speakers. This doesn’t actually happen often but you
should be aware that it is possible.
Weak amplifiers with low output ratings can actually be more dangerous for your speakers at medium volumes
because weak amplifiers may overload much faster than powerful ones and this causes measurable and audi-
ble distortion, which is extremely dangerous to your loudspeakers.
Always turn the volume down immediately as soon as you hear distortion! If you like listening to loud music
make sure that your amplifier can deliver at least as much power as the speakers’ power-handling rating.
THE SOUND YOU CAN’T HEAR...
Amplifiers, tuners and CD players can all produce inaudible high-frequency signals – and this doesn’t only
apply to cheap products. If your tweeters fail at low or medium volumes you should have a qualified technician
check your system components for dangerous inaudible signals.
