Getting started
2 FST-2000 TestPad Service Pack/Upgrade/Optioning Instructions June 2004
Getting started
Acterna ships application module software upgrades, options, and
V6 UIM service packs on PCMCIA cards. You can also download soft-
ware upgrades and service packs from Acterna’s Customer Care or
FTP sites. Instructions for downloading upgrades or service packs
onto your PC or the TestPad are available on the sites.
Before you load a service pack, application module software upgrade,
or options, make sure the TestPad is connected to an AC adapter and
the adaptor is plugged in. Always use the AC adaptor that shipped with
your UIM. Using a different adaptor may damage the unit. Acterna also
recommends using a battery charged to at least 50 percent capacity
as a backup power supply.
Loading a V6 UIM service pack
The following procedure describes how to load a service pack for a V6
UIM.
To load a service pack
1 Make sure the application module is connected to the UIM.
2 Make sure the TestPad is OFF.
3 Connect the AC adaptor that shipped with your UIM to the
TestPad, and then plug the adaptor into a power source.
4 Do one of the following:
Insert the PCMCIA card with the service pack into one of the
PCMCIA card slots located on the unit’s top panel.
If you previously downloaded the service pack on to the
TestPad, you do not need to insert a PCMCIA card. Proceed to
step 5.
CAUTION: DAMAGE TO TESTPAD
When you load a service pack or software upgrade, the TestPad
loads the new software, and then automatically reboots. If power is
interrupted during this process, the TestPad may require factory
service to operate.

Loading options for V6-compatible application modules
You can purchase a variety of options for your UIM and application
module that expand your testing abilities and enhance your work
processes. Options are shipped on PCMCIA cards. If a software
upgrade is required for the options, the upgrade is also shipped on the
cards. You can load options onto your unit from a single card or from
two separate cards simultaneously.
To load options on a V6-compatible application module
1 Insert the PCMCIA card or cards with the options in a PCMCIA
card slot.
2 Turn the TestPad ON.
If the options you purchased require a software upgrade, you will
be prompted to upgrade the unit before loading the options. See

page 3.
3 Select the Tools button, and then do one of the following:
To load UIM options, select TestPad Settings, and then select
the Revisions/Options tab.
To load application module options, select FST-XXXX

NOTE:
If you inserted two PCMCIA optioning cards into the TestPad, and
