PE4000
Infrared Camera
Operating Instructions
Introduction
The ARIES PE4000 ThermaView is a combination color video and monochrome infrared
video camera designed specifically for locating hidden lateral openings in newly relined
pipelines. The infrared camera locates the hidden lateral by detecting the thermal anomaly
that occurs on the wall of the liner at the hidden lateral. A temperature contrast exists on the
wall of the liner at the lateral because the portion of the liner in contact with the carrier
assumes the temperature of the carrier pipe and surrounding soil while the portion of the liner
spanning the hidden lateral opening will be at a different temperature because of the air or liq-
uid present in the lateral.
The PE4000 Camera Assembly has a dual function head with a color video camera on one
end and a thermal infrared camera on the other. The head can be pivoted by the operator to
place the desired camera in position.

Operation
Operation of the PE4000 is similar to that of the PE2100 Illuminator Pan and Tilt Camera.
PCU settings, hook-up procedures, Camera body pressurization, SMARTEK diagnostics, and
Camera maintenance procedures are identical to those for the PE2100. See the Illuminator
Pan and Tilt Camera Operation and Maintenance Manual, p/n 970071 for detailed proce-
dures.
The PE4000 is controlled by the RC2005 Pan and Tilt Camera Control.
The Controls function as follows:
On-Off Switch
Controls power to the Control Box and Camera. The indicator lamp to the
right of the switch illuminates when power is on.
Pan/Rotate Joy Stick
Pan Right
Camera head pans to the right.
Pan Left
Camera head pans to the left
Rotate Left
Camera head rotates counter-clockwise.
Rotate Right
Camera head rotates clockwise.

Diagnostics
Activates the SMARTEK diagnostic system. (See Illuminator Manual
Section 2)
Iris (ThermaView Focus)
Focuses the thermal infrared camera. Pressing and holding the
switch in either the Open or Close position will cause the thermal
infrared camera to continuously change focus from near to far to
near, etc. To focus, press and hold switch until image is in focus. If
focus point is passed, bump switch in other direction until focus is
achieved.
Auto Center
All
Rotates and tilts head to color video image Home position (image
upright and straight ahead). If camera is in Thermaview mode,
when activated, it will switch to color video image and go to Home
position.
STARLITE (Tractor Lift)-ThermaView Exchange
Not functional as Auto Center, STARLITE, or Tractor Lift on
PE4000. On PE4000, it toggles the camera between color video
and thermal infrared modes. If camera is in color video mode, it
will rotate head and switch to thermal infrared mode. If in thermal
infrared mode, it will rotate head and switch to color video mode.
Focus
Adjusts the focus on the color video camera only.
In
Image focus moves toward camera lens.
Out
Image focus moves away from camera lens.
Zoom
Not functional on PE4000
Inspection/Reinstatement Procedures
The PE4000 is connected in train with an Aries Raptor or other cutter and towed
through the liner to a footage position where a lateral was identified during the pre-lin-
ing inspection. This is normally done with the PE4000 in the color video mode. If no
evidence of the hidden lateral is visible in the color video image, toggle the camera to

the ThermaView mode by pressing the Auto Center switch to the STARLITE (Tractor
Lift)-ThermaView Exchange position. Once in the ThermaView mode, focus the image
and look for evidence of the hidden lateral. It will appear in the ThermaView image as
either darker or lighter than the rest of the liner wall, depending on the temperature dif-
ferential (colder areas appear darker and warmer areas appear lighter.)
Once the location of the hidden lateral is identified, the cutter can be positioned and
activated to begin the reinstatement process while observing the Thermaview image.
When the outline of the lateral is established, the camera can be toggled to the color
video mode to provide more detail for finishing the reinstatement process.
