Planning your Media Center setup
Video signal source Your computer uses a
coaxial video signal from an antenna, a direct cable
TV connection, a cable box, or a satellite receiver.
Cable boxes and satellite receivers are also called
set-top boxes. Make sure that you have access to a
video source.
You’ve probably already decided where you want to set
up and use your Media Center computer, but before you
start connecting Media Center components, take a few
minutes to make sure that all of these connections are
available in the location you’ve selected.
Locate connections
Internet connection Your computer needs an
Internet connection to update the program guide
and to access the Internet. Make sure that you
have access to a dial-up or broadband Internet
connection. See your computer user’s guide for more
information about setting up an Internet connection.

packaging and lay them out for easy access during the

Windows Update
Remember to check regularly for Windows updates to keep the operating
system updated with the latest software releases and security updates.
To start the Windows Update utility, connect to the Internet, click Start, All
Programs, then click Windows Update. The Windows Update Web site
opens. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Now that youre familiar with the Media Center
components, connect them to your Media Center
computer.

Insert two AA batteries into the remote. Make sure
to match the + and - on the batteries with the
+ and - symbols inside the battery compartment.

Connect the remote sensor to a USB port on
your computer. Then position the sensor so there
is a direct, unobstructed line-of-sight between the
remote and the remote sensor. The remote has a
range of 10 feet.

Locate the IR sensor on the set-top box by shining
a flashlight through the IR sensor window. Look for
a 1/2 to 3/8 inch metallic rectangle with a 1/8 inch
dark circle in the middle. This is the IR sensor.

make sure that youve set up your computer
according to the instructions on the Set Up Your
Gateway Computer poster.

Plug the IR emitter into the
port on the back of the remote
sensor.

Connect the coaxial cable from an antenna,
a direct cable connection, or a set-top box
coax-out port to the coax-in port on the back
of your computer.
Remove the adhesive paper
from the back of the IR emitter.

Place the sticky side of the
IR emitter on the set-top box
sensor window. Make sure that
the infrared emitter is placed
directly in front of the IR sensor.
Devices that are connected to your computer and that are not
grounded correctly could cause damage to your computer. Make sure
that the video source to your computer is electrically grounded. For
more information about correct grounding, see your Gateway computer
users guide.

Turning on and setting up software
After the Media Center components are connected to
your computer, youre ready to turn on the power and
complete the Media Center set up.

Press the power button on the front of the monitor,
then press the power button on the front of the
computer.

Follow the Windows setup screens. Make sure that
you set up your Internet connection before starting
step 3. See your Gateway computer users guide
for more information about setting up an Internet
connection.

Turn on any peripheral devices, such as speakers,
printers, or scanners, and follow the on-screen
instructions to complete the peripheral devices
setup.

After the initial Windows setup is complete, press
the Media Center button on the remote to start
the Media Center setup. The Media Center setup
wizard opens.

Follow the setup screens to configure the Media
Center for your specific requirements.

The Media Center remote lets you take full control of
your Media Center experience. You can quickly start the
Media Center by pressing the Media Center button.

Media Center menu option, then press OK.

Using HelpSpot
Your computer also includes HelpSpot, an easily
accessible collection of help information, troubleshooters,
instructional videos, and automated support. Use
HelpSpot to answer questions about Windows and to help
you quickly discover and use the many features of your
Gateway Media Center computer. HelpSpot also has an
area called Contact Gateway that helps you find the right
resource at Gateway to answer your questions or help
solve your problems.
To start HelpSpot, click Start, then click Help and
Support. HelpSpot opens.
