INSTALLATION MANUAL FOR BOILER SYSTEM EXPANSION TANK
Please read the following instructions carefully.
Keep this manual with the tank for future reference.
WARNING READ CAREFULLY THE PRODUCT INSTALLATION,
OPERATING, AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS IN THE
MANUAL MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY, DEATH, AND/OR
SIGNIFICANT PROPERTY DAMAGE, AND WILL VOID THE PRODUCT
WARRANTY. FOLLOW ALL APPLICABLE LOCAL AND STATE CODES
AND REGULATIONS, IN THE ABSENCE OF SUCH CODES, FOLLOW
THE CURRENT EDITIONS OF THE NATIONAL PLUMBING CODE AND
NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE, AS APPLICABLE.
THIS IS THE SAFETY ALERTY SYMBOL. IT IS USED TO
ALERT YOU TO POTENTIAL PERSONAL INJURY AND
OTHER HAZARDS. OBEY ALL SAFETY MESSAGES THAT
FOLLOW THIS SYMBOL TO REDUCE THE RISK OF
POSSIBLE INJURY AS WELL AS PROPERTY DAMAGE
NOTE: Inspect for shipping damage and notify freight carrier or store where
purchased immediately if damage is present. To avoid risk of personal injury
and property damage, if the product appears to be malfunctioning or shows
signs of corrosion, call a qualified professional immediately.
WARNING FAILURE TO PROPERLY SEAL VALVE CAP WILL RESULT IN
LOSS OF PRE-CHARGE CAUSING PRODUCT TO FAIL.
WARNING This expansion tank and the associated piping will in time
leak. This tank must be installed in a location that allows
for easy access, visual inspection and where water leakage will not
cause property damage. Installation must include a means for adequate
drainage. This tank must not be installed in a location that is subject to
freezing. This tank must be installed in the vertical position. The
manufacturer of this product is not liable or responsible for any water
damage associated with the installation and/or failure of this product. Failure
to follow these instructions will void the warranty and may result in
serious injury, death, and/or property damage.
WARNING EXPLOSION OR RUPTURE HAZARD. This expansion
tank is designed for water storage at a maximum pressure of 100 PSI and a
maximum temperature of 240 F. A properly sized pressure relief valve set to
local code must be installed on the system. This tank is shipped with a pre-
charge of 12 PSI and any adjustment to the pre-charge must be done prior to
installation and at ambient temperature. Do not adjust the pre-charge of this
tank if the product is corroded or damaged or shows any signs of diminished
integrity. Do not adjust pre-charge of the expansion tank with the system
under pressure. Failure to follow these instructions is UNSAFE and may
result in serious injury, death, and/or property damage.
WARNING This tank is designed to be supported by system piping.
Make sure that there is adequate means of supporting
the system piping and, if necessary, add strapping, brackets, or pipe hangars.
DO NOT INSTALL THIS EXPANSION TANK IN THE HORIZONTAL
POSITION.

Pre-Installation
1. Visually inspect expansion tank for any damage.
2. Adjust pre-charge to equal system fill pressure.
3. Replace and tighten plastic cap on air fitting.
Installation
1. Drain the boiler system or isolate the area where the expansion tank
will be installed.
2. Install the expansion tank on the supply side of the boiler, on the
suction-side of the heating circulator(s) (see Fig. 1).
3. Once the expansion tank is installed, re-pressurize the system and
check for leaks. Repair as necessary.
4. Restart the boiler system and check for relief valve discharge. If the
relief valve drips, the tank may be improperly charged or undersized.
5. The expansion tank is now operational and will absorb expanded
water during boiler operation.

Maintenance
1. A professional plumber should check the complete heating system,
including the expansion tank, yearly and more frequently as
the system ages.
Operation
Plumbers Edge hydronic expansion tanks are designed to
accommodate the natural expansion of water in a hydronic (forced hot
water) heating system. When water heats up, it expands and in a
closed system can cause unsafe operating pressures and nuisance
operation of the boiler relief valve.
Notes
Although the expansion tank does not have to be installed at the base
of an air purger, this installation is recommended to reduce air in the
system and provide a compact installation. Some method of air
elimination is required to ensure an oxygen-free system.
WARNING
FOR USE IN CLOSED RESIDENTIAL HYDRONIC SYSTEMS
ONLY. Do not install on a domestic water heater, or in a radiant
heating system without barrier tubing. Corrosion and tank failure
may result. Use a water heater expansion tank for domestic
water systems (potable water). Do Not Use On System With
ASME Rated Vessels.
