5. Electrical conn ection
5.1 General
The electrical connection sh ould be carried out by an
authorised electrici an in accorda nce with loca l
regulations.
The supply volta ge, rated m aximum cur rent and
cos appear from the l oose data pl ate that must be
fitted close to the installation site.
The required volta ge quality for Grund fos MS and
MMS submersible mot ors, measured at the motor
terminals, is – 10 %/+ 6 % of t he nominal vo ltage
during continuous op eration (incl uding variatio n in
the su
pply voltage and los ses in cables ).
Furthermore, it must be chec ked that there is vol tage
symmetry in the ele ctricity sup ply lines, i .e. same
difference of vo ltage betw een the individua l phases.
See also 9. Checkin g of motor an d cable, poi nt 2.
If MS motors with a b uilt-in temper ature transmitter
(Tempcon) are not insta lled t ogether with a n MP 2 04
or similar Grundfos motor protect ion, they mus t be
connected to a 0.47 µF capacitor ap proved for
phase-phase operati on (IEC 384-1 4) to meet t he
ECEMC directive (2 004/108/EC). The capacito r
must be connected t o the two pha ses to which the
temperature transmi tter is conn ected. See fi g. 4.
Fig. 4 Connection of capac itor
The
motors are wound for direct-o n-line starting or
star-delta startin g and the st arting c urrent is betw een
4 and 6 times the ra ted current of the motor.
The run-up time of the motor is only about
0.1se cond. Direct- on-line starti ng is there fore
normally approved b y the electri city supply
authorities.
5.1.1 Frequency conv erter operati on
Three-phase MS motors can be connect ed to a
frequency converter.
If a temperature tr ansmitter is required, a Pt100
sensor for fitting t o the submer sible motor ca n be
ordered from Grundf os.
Note
In cases where t he stated liqui d
velocity cannot be a chieved, a fl ow
sleeve must be inst alled.

5.1 General
The electrical connectio n should be carried out by an
authorised electri cian in accord ance with loc al

The supply vol tage, rated maximum cu rrent and

Furthermore, it must be ch ecked that there is voltage
symmetry in the el ectricity su pply lines, i.e. same
difference of v oltage bet ween the individua l phases .
See also 9. Checki ng of motor a nd cable, po int 2.

temperature transmit ter is conne cted. See fig . 4.
Fig. 4 Connection of capacitor
The
motors are wound for direct-on- line starting or
star-delta starting and the sta rting c urrent is betwe en
4 and 6 times the rat ed current o f the motor.
The run-up time of the motor is only about
0.1sec ond. Direct-o n-line startin g is theref ore
normally approved by the electric ity supply
authorities.
5.1.1 Frequency conve rter operatio n
Three-phase MS m otors can be connected to a
frequency converter.
If a temperature tra nsmitter is required, a P t100
sensor for fitting to the submersi ble motor can be
ordered from Grundfo s.
Note
In cases where th e stated liquid
velocity cannot be ac hieved, a flo w
sleeve must be insta lled.

Note
For 37 kW MMS 6000, 110 kW MMS 8000
and 170 kW MMS 10000 , the maximum
liquid temperature is 5 °C lowe r than
the values stated in the above tab le.
For 190 kW MMS 10000 , the
temperature is 10 °C lower.
Warning
Before starting w ork on the m otor,
make sure that the e lectricity su pply
has been switched off and that it cannot
be accidentally s witched on.
Warning
The motor must be earthed.
The motor must be connected t o an
external mains switc h with a min imum
contact gap of 3 mm in all poles.
Caution
If an MS motor wit h temperatu re
transmitter is connecte d to a frequency
converter, a fuse incor porated in th e
transmitter will melt and the transmitter
will be inactive. The transmitter cannot
be reactivated. This means that th e
motor will operate li ke a motor wi thout
a temperature transm itter.

motors
If the motor is d elivered fro m stock, the liquid
level must be checke d before the motor is
installed. See f ig. 2.
In the case of se rvice, the liquid lev el must be
checked. See fig. 2 .
Filling procedure:
The filling hole for mot or liquid is pl aced at the t op of
the motor.
1. Posit ion the subme rsible mo tor as s hown i n fig . 2.
The filling scre w must be a t the highest point of
the motor.
2. Remov e the screw fr om the fillin g hole.
3. Injec t liquid into the motor wit h the filling syringe,
fig. 2, until the li quid runs ba ck out of the f illing
hole.
4. Repla ce the screw i n the filling hole and tig hten
securely before chan ging the posi
tion of the
motor.
Torque: 3.0 Nm.
The submersible moto r is now read y for installat ion.

and MMS 12000 submer sible motors
Filling procedure:
Place the motor at a 45 ° angle w ith the top of the
motor upwards. See f ig. 3.
5. Unscr ew the plug (A ) and place a funnel in th e
hole.
6. Pour tap wa ter into the mo tor until the mo tor liquid
inside the motor star ts runnin g out at the pl ug (A) .
Caution: Do not use motor liquid as it contai ns
oil.
7. Remov e the funnel a nd refit the plug (A).
The submer
sible motor is now r eady for insta llation.
