GENERAL OPERATION
Readthisoperator'smanualcarefullyinitsentiretybeforeattemptingto
assemblethismachine.Read,understand,andfollowallinstructionsonthe
machineandinthemanual(s)beforeoperation.Keepthismanualinasafe
placefor futureandregularreferenceandfororderingreplacementparts.
Becompletelyfamiliarwith thecontrolsandtheproperuseofthismachine
beforeoperatingit.
Thismachineisaprecisionpieceofpowerequipment,notaplaything.
Therefore,exerciseextremecautionatalltimes.Yourmachinehasbeen
designedtoperformonejob:toedgelawn.Donotuseitforanyother
purpose.
Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsofagetooperatethismachine.Children

Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesandclose-fittingslacksandshirts.
Shirtsandpantsthatcoverthearmsandlegsandsteel-toedshoesare
recommended.Neveroperatethismachineinbarefeet,sandals,slipperyor
lightweight(e.g.canvas)shoes.
Neverattempttomakeanyadjustmentswhiletheengineisrunning,except
wherespecificallyrecommendedintheoperator'smanual.
Donotput handsorfeetnearrotatingparts.Contactwith therotatingblade
canamputatehandsandfeet.
Thebladecontrolhandleisasafetydevice.Neverbypassitsoperation.Doing
so,makesthemachineunsafeandmaycausepersonalinjury.

sparkplugwireandgroundagainsttheenginetopreventunintended
starting.

SERVICE
Safe Handling of Gasoline:
Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamageuseextremecareinhandling
gasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammable andthevaporsareexplosive.
Seriouspersonalinjury canoccurwhen gasolineisspilledonyourselforyour
clotheswhichcanignite. Washyourskin andchangeclothesimmediately.
Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.
Neverfill containersinsideavehicleoronatruckortrailerbedwith aplastic
liner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthegroundawayfromyourvehiclebefore
filling.
Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruckortrailerandrefuelit on
theground.Ifthisisnotpossible,thenrefuelsuchequipmentonatrailer
with aportablecontainer,ratherthanfromagasolinedispensernozzle.
Keepthenozzleincontactwith therimofthefueltankorcontaineropening
atalltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.Donotuseanozzlelock-opendevice.
Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersources
ofignition.
Neverfuelmachineindoorsbecauseflammablevaporswill accumulatein
thearea.
Neverremovegascaporaddfuelwhileengineishotorrunning.Allow
enginetocoolatleasttwominutesbeforerefueling.
Neverover-fillfueltank.Toallowforexpansionofthefuel,donotfill above
thebottomofthefueltankneck.
Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.
Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeit offthe engineandequipment.Movemachineto
anotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestartingengine.
Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainernearanopenflame,sparkorpilot
lightasonawaterheater,spaceheater,furnace,clothesdryerorothergas
appliances.
Toreducefire hazard,keepmachinefreeofgrass,leaves,orotherdebris
build-up.Cleanupoilorfuelspillageandremoveanyfuel-soakeddebris.
Allowmachinetocoolatleast5minutesbeforestoring.
General Service:
Neverrunanengineindoorsorinapoorlyventilatedarea.Engineexhaust
containscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas.
Beforecleaning,repairing,orinspecting,makecertainthebladeandall
movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthesparkplugwireandground
againsttheenginetopreventunintendedstarting.
Checkthebladeandenginemountingboltsatfrequentintervalsfor proper
tightness.Also,visuallyinspectbladefordamage(e.g.,bent,cracked,
worn)Replacebladewiththeoriginalequipmentmanufacture's(O.E.M.)
bladeonly,listedinthismanual."Useofpartswhichdonotmeetthe
originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadtoimproperperformanceand
compromisesafety!"
Lawnedgerbladesaresharpandcancut.Wrapthebladeorweargloves,
anduseextracautionwhenservicingthem.
Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstight tobesuretheequipmentisinsafe
workingcondition.
Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheirproperoperationregularly.
Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stoptheengine,disconnectthesparkplug
wireandgroundagainsttheengine.Thoroughlyinspectthelawnedgerfor
anydamage.Repairthedamagebeforestartingandoperatingthelawn
edger.
Neverattempttomakeawheeladjustmentwhiletheengineisrunning.
Manycomponentsonyournewedgercanwearwithcontinueduse.For
safetyprotection,frequentlycheckalledgercomponentsandreplace
immediatelywith originalequipmentmanufacturer's(O.E.M.)parts
only,listedinthismanual."Useofpartswhichdonotmeettheoriginal
equipmentspecificationsmayleadto improperperformanceand
compromisesafety!"
Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingoroverspeedtheengine.The
governorcontrolsthemaximumsafeoperatingspeedoftheengine.
Maintainorreplacesafetyandinstructionlabels,asnecessary.
Observeproperdisposallawsandregulationsforusedgas,oil,etc..Improper
disposaloffluidsandmaterialscanharmtheenvironment.

AccordingtotheConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC)andtheU.S.
EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproducthasanAverageUseful
Lifeofseven(7)years,or70hoursofoperation.AttheendoftheAverage
UsefulLifehavethemachineinspectedannuallybyanauthorizedservice
dealertoensurethatall mechanicalandsafetysystemsareworkingproperly
andnotwornexcessively.Failuretodosocanresultinaccidents,injuriesor
death.
DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE
Toavoidseriousinjuryor death,donot modifyengineinanyway. Tampering
with thegovernorsetting canleadto arunawayengineandcauseit to
operateat unsafespeeds.Nevertamperwith factorysetting ofengine
governor.
NOTICE REGARDING EMiSSiONS
Engineswhich arecertifiedto complywith CaliforniaandfederalEPA
emissionregulationsforSORE(Sinai[OffRoadEquipment)arecertified
tooperateonregularunleadedgasoline,and mayincludethefollowing
emissioncontrolsystems:EngineModification (EM),OxidizingCatalyst(0C),
SecondaryAirinjection(SAI)andThreeWayCatalyst(TWC)ifsoequipped.
SPARK ARRESTOR
Thismachineisequippedwith aninternalcombustionengineandshould
not beusedonor nearanyunimprovedforest-covered,brushcoveredor
grass-coveredlandunlesstheengine'sexhaustsystemisequippedwith a
sparkarrestormeeting applicablelocalor statelaws(if any).
Ifasparkarrestorisused,itshouldbemaintained ineffective workingorder
bytheoperator.IntheStateofCaliforniathe aboveisrequiredbylaw(Section
4442ofthe CaliforniaPublicResourcesCode).Otherstatesmayhavesimilar
laws.Federallawsapply onfederallands.

Keep bystanders, pets, and children at least 75 feet from the machine while it is in operation. Stop
machine if anyone enters the area.

usedtocontrolthedepthofthecut.Thefurtherforwardthebladedepthcontrol
leverismoved,thedeeperintothesoiltheedgerbladewill cut.
BevelAdjustmentLever
Thebeveladjustmentleverislocatedonthefront, leftportionoftheedger,behind
theedgerblade.Itisusedtovarytheangleoftheedgerbladebetweenoneofthree
positionsforedging/trenchingor bevelededging.
RecoilStarter
Therecoilstarterisusedtostarttheengine.
Primer
Theprimerisusedtopumpgasintothecarburetorandaidinstartingtheengine.
Useit tostartacoldengine,butdonotuseitto restartawarmengineafterashort
shutdown.
MeetsANSISafety Standards
CraftsmanEdgersconformtothesafetystandardoftheAmericanNationalStandardsInstitute(ANSI).

Besurenooneotherthantheoperatorisstanding nearthe lawnmower
while starting engineoroperatingmower.Neverrunengineindoorsor
inenclosed,poorlyventilated areas.Engineexhaustcontainscarbon
monoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas.Keephands,feet, hairand loose
clothingawayfromanymovingpartsonengineandJawnmower.
ToStart Engine
1. MovethebladedepthcontrolleverbacktotheSTARTpositioninthe
adjacent(top)notch.
2. Pushtheprimerthreetimes.SeeFigure8.Donotprimeto restartawarm
engine.
NOTE:Ifyoupushtheprimertoomanytimes,excessivefuelwill floodthe
carburetorandtheenginewill bedifficulttostart.
3. Standingbehindtheedger,depressthebladecontrolandholdit againstthe
upperhandlewithyourlefthand.
Thisbladecontrolmechanismisasafety device.Neverattempt to bypass
itsoperation.
4. Withyourrighthand,grasprecoilstarterhandleandpullropeslowlyuntil
resistanceisfelt,thenpullwith arapid,continuous,full armstroke.See
Figure8.Keepingafirm griponthestartercordhandle,letthe roperewind
slowly.Repeatuntilenginecranks.Lettheroperewindeachtimeslowly.
Keepafirm griponthecordhandleandmaintain sufficient backward
tensiononthe cordatall timesto preventrapidstartercordretraction
(kickback).Rapidretractioncanpull armandhandtoward the engine
fasterthanyoucanletgo,and resultinbrokenbones,fractures,bruisesor
sprains.
ToStop Engine
1. Releasebladecontroltostoptheengineandblade.
Edging
Rotatingcutting blademaythrow objectscausingpersonalinjury.Keep
areaclearof bystandersanddo notoperatewithout guardsinplace.
Donotlowerbladeif bladeisoverconcrete,asphalt,rocksorthe like. Blade
canstrikesupportingsurface,resultingin personalinjury or property
damage.
Tobeginedging,proceedasfollows:
1. Moveedgertoanareatobeedged,makingsurethattheleft rearwheelison
ahardsurfaceandthebladeisovertheareatobecut.SeeFigure9.

2. Withthebladecontrolsqueezedagainstthe handlein theoperating
position,makea passalongareatobeedgedbeforeproceedingtothenext
notch.Thefurtherforwardthatthebladedepthcontrolleverismoved,the
deeperor lowerthebladewill cutintotheground.Severalpassesmaybe
necessarytoobtainthedesireddepthofcut.Donotlowerblademorethan
onedepthnotchatatimewithout makingapass.
3. Forbestresults,proceedslowlyalongthe pathbeingedged.Slowlymove
edgerbackandforththroughcuttingarea,againmakingsureto keepthe
leftrearwheelonthehardsurfaceandthebladeinthecuttingpath,closeto
butnottouchingtheedgeofthehardsurface.
4. Onceyouhavefinishededgingselectedarea,raisethebladedepthcontrol
leverbackintotheSTARTposition,movetothenextareatobeedged,and
proceedagainfromstep1.

Therightrearwheeloftheedgercanbeloweredintooneoffivepositionstoease
thetaskofedgingalongacurb.Toadjusttheheightofcurbwheel,proceedas
follows:

Disconnectthe sparkplugwire andgroundagainstthe enginebefore
performing the following steps.
Theedger bladeissharp.Wearleatherwork glovesto protectyourhands
whenworkingaroundtheedgerblade.
Usetwowrenches(onewrenchtopreventhexboltheadfromspinningand
theothertounthreadtheflangenut)to removeflangenutthatsecures
edgerblade,leavingthe edgerbladeinplace.SeeFigure12.

4. ClaimsandCoverageExclusions
Warrantyclaimsshallbefiledin accordancewiththeprovisionsoftheSears
EngineWarrantyPolicy.Warrantycoverageshallbeexcludedforfailuresof
WarrantedPartswhicharenotoriginalSearspartsor becauseofabuse,neglect
orimpropermaintenanceassetforth intheSearsEngineWarrantyPolicy.Sears
isnotliabletocoverfailuresofWarrantedPartscausedbytheuseofadd-on,
non-original,ormodifiedparts.
5. Maintenance
AnyWarrantedPartwhichisnotscheduledforreplacementasrequired
maintenanceorwhichisscheduledonlyforregularinspectiontotheeffectof
"repairorreplaceasnecessary"shallbewarrantedastodefectsforthewarranty
period.AnyWarrantedPartwhichisscheduledfor replacementasrequired
maintenanceshallbewarrantedasto defectsonlyfortheperiodoftimeup
tothefirstscheduledreplacementforthat part.Anyreplacementpartthatis
equivalentin performanceanddurabilitymaybeusedin theperformanceof
