IMPORTANT
This refri
g
erator is desi
g
ned to operate on power suppl
y
limits as follows:
120 volt AC operation: 132 volts max., 108 volts min. 12 volt DC operation: 15.4 volts max., 12 volts min.
61 hertz max., 59 hertz min.
Operation on power supplies exceedin
g
the maximum limits ma
y
cause dama
g
e and void the warrant
y
. Operation on power
supplies below the limits will result in unacceptable performance.
When operatin
g
on 12 volts DC, a batter
y
source must be used. Operatin
g
the refri
g
erator on a convertor or batter
y
char
g
er alone
(
without a batter
y
in the circuit
)
is not recommended since these devices do not normall
y
suppl
y
a filtered DC source. Unsatisfactor
y
operation will result.

INSTALLATION
In preparin
g
the DE-704D for installation, the followin
g
areas
should be considered:
1.
Ade
q
uate ventilation.
2.
Sizin
g
of suppl
y
wire and fuse protection.
3.
Direct wirin
g
from batter
y
to avoid electrical interference
with other e
q
uipment.
4.
Provisions to prevent batter
y
run-down.
5.
Provide correct volta
g
e and fre
q
uenc
y
for AC operation.
6.
Proper
g
roundin
g
to prevent electrol
y
sis for marine applica-
tions.
These instructions provide a
g
uide to insure compliance to the
situations listed above.
The Norcold dual volta
g
e refri
g
erator is desi
g
ned for the recrea-
tional vehicle, Marine industr
y
, as well as under the counter instal-
lations. A t
y
pical R.V. installation, for instance, re
q
uires the refri
g
-
erator to operate on 12 volt DC while in transit and 120 volt AC
while parked. The Norcold refri
g
erator automaticall
y
converts from
one power source to the other.
Unlike the absorption-t
y
pe refri
g
erator, which re
q
uires a constant
heat source for efficient operation,
y
our dual volta
g
e refri
g
erator
operates on the same principle as the standard domestic refri
g
era-
tor. That is, it has an electricall
y
operated compressor and uses
freon as its refri
g
eratin
g
medium.
Unit Location
Be sure the refri
g
erator is not installed in direct sunli
g
ht, or near
a
g
as stove, heater or other heat
g
eneratin
g
sources. A flan
g
ed
mountin
g
frame is provided around the front of the refri
g
erator
cabinet to allow build-in installation.
The refri
g
erator must be located and secured on a solid surface
within the vehicle.
The openin
g
cut-out dimensions for the refri
g
erator are listed in
Table 1. Measure for the openin
g
and determine if
y
ou have the
proper clearances for installation. There is no need for allowin
g
an
area around the cabinet for additional insulation as the Norcold
refri
g
erator is well insulated and re
q
uires no additional insulation.
Table 1
Before installin
g
the cabinet into the openin
g
, check to see if the
AC power suppl
y
cord of the unit is properl
y
connected to the AC
wall outlet and if the DC suppl
y
should be connected. In man
y
cases, the DC suppl
y
can be connected from outside the vehicle
b
y
means of the vent or access door.
Place the refri
g
erator into the wall openin
g
and secure it in place
b
y
fastenin
g
the mountin
g
flan
g
e to the wall throu
g
h the holes
provided.
Please note the perforated access panel at the front base of the
refri
g
erator. This panel allows air movement to flow under the
cabinet and over the power suppl
y
for coolin
g
.
The rear side of the unit must not be closed off without providin
g
ventilation. At least 50 s
q
. inches must be provided to allow re-
j
ected heat to escape.
For travel trailers, a small louver-t
y
pe vent of approximatel
y
4" x
16" area ma
y
be installed at the top and at the bottom of the
exterior wall of the vehicle for outside ventin
g
purposes.
A combination of a roof
j
ack and lower vent or two side vents
offers ade
q
uate ventin
g
for hi
g
h outside ambient temperatures.
The more air circulatin
g
over the condenser
(
located at rear
)
, the
more efficient the refri
g
erator will operate. Failure to provide the
necessar
y
ventilation will result in poor refri
g
eration. If operation at
low outside ambient temperatures is necessar
y
(
below 23° F
)
all
exterior ventin
g
must be covered to prevent serious performance
loss.
When installation incorporates exterior ventin
g
and operation at
low outside ambient temperatures is necessar
y
(
below 23° F
)
, ex-
terior ventin
g
must be covered or reduced coolin
g
efficienc
y
in
cabinet will result.
Power Supply
Provisions are made for connection of either 12 volts DC or 120
volts AC to the refri
g
erator. If both 12 volts DC and 120 volts AC
are simultaneousl
y
supplied, a special rela
y
in the refri
g
erator
power suppl
y
allows the unit to run on 120 volts AC. To convert to
DC power, the AC suppl
y
is simpl
y
disconnected.
DC Power Connection
The DC suppl
y
connection is located behind the perforated ac-
cess panel at the bottom front of the unit. Remove the screw from
the top center of the access panel and remove the panel. The DC
terminal box is located in the control power suppl
y
assembl
y
. The
positive and ne
g
ative DC suppl
y
connections are located in this
terminal box. The terminal box is provided with knock-out holes for
routin
g
the DC lead wires throu
g
h the side of the terminal box.
The size of the wire from
y
our 12 volt DC batter
y
is dependent
upon the distance between the refri
g
erator and the batter
y
. Refer
to Table 2 for wire size.
Table 2
This recommended wire size is to prevent a volta
g
e drop at the
refri
g
erator which is critical to DC performance.
Use of wire sizes smaller than those listed ma
y
cause excessive
DC runnin
g
time, shorter batter
y
life, and poor performance due to
line loss.
It is important that the 12 volt, DC suppl
y
wires be connected
directl
y
to the batter
y
and that the wires are dedicated to the re-
fri
g
erator
(
other appliances are connected b
y
separate wires
)
. This
practice minimizes the possibilit
y
of radio and T.V. interference.
Twistin
g
the positive and ne
g
ative suppl
y
wires further helps to
nullif
y
the induction effects which could further add to radio/T.V.
interference.
To the leads located in the terminal box, connect the positive
batter
y
lead to the red wire and the ne
g
ative batter
y
lead to the
black wire
(
important to be well insulated
)
. These splices should
be soldered or connected b
y
means of an approved splice con-
nector. Tape the spliced connections
g
enerousl
y
before replacin
g
the terminal cover box.
A 15 amp fuse should be installed as close to the batter
y
as
possible in the positive wire leadin
g
to the refri
g
erator. This fuse
will protect the wirin
g
from the batter
y
to the refri
g
erator in the
event of a short circuit.
CAUTION:
DO NOT OPERATE REFRIGERATOR ON BATTERY ALONE.
THE BATTERY MUST HAVE A CHARGING MEANS SUCH AS
AN ON-BOARD GENERATOR; IF NOT, THE BATTERY WILL
DISCHARGE IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.

AC Power Connection
The 120 volt AC power connection is made b
y
connectin
g
the
refri
g
erator’s AC cord to a standard 120 volt
g
rounded receptacle.
See Fi
g
ure 2.
The 120 volt AC suppl
y
wires, to which the refri
g
erator is con-
nected, should be routed throu
g
h the fuse panel or circuit breaker
that protects the vehicle when an outside power source is used.
This connection should be permanentl
y
wired in accord-
ance with existin
g
g
overnin
g
codes. The use of an extension cord
is not recommended.
CAUTION:
IF AC POWER IS SUPPLIED BY AN ON-BOARD GENERATOR,
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO HOLD BOTH VOLTAGE AND FRE-
QUENCY WITHIN THE TOLERANCES STATED IN THE FRONT
OF THIS MANUAL
OPERATION
Power Source
As previousl
y
noted, the Norcold refri
g
erator can be operated on
either 12 volts DC or 120 volts AC. If both power sources are
connected simultaneousl
y
, the refri
g
erator will operate on 120
volts AC. A special rela
y
disconnects the DC power. To operate
on DC power, the AC source must be disconnected, allowin
g
the
rela
y
to switch to 12 volts DC.
On DC operation the circuit is protected electronicall
y
for over-
current and overvolta
g
e. Likewise on AC operation the circuit is
protected from overload conditions b
y
a bi-metallic current limitin
g
device.
Temperature Control
A sin
g
le thermostat controls the operation of the refri
g
erator on
AC or DC. It is located on the panel below the front door
(
See Fi
g
.
1
)
. The dial is marked "1" throu
g
h "5". The nearer the dial is set to
"5", the colder the temperature becomes in the cabinet.
There is no need to read
j
ust the settin
g
of the thermostat for
dual operation. Once the desired temperature is reached, the
thermostat will control the cabinet temperature e
q
uall
y
well on
either volta
g
e suppl
y
.
Initial Start-up
Before operatin
g
the refri
g
erator for the first time, check to see
that the AC and DC suppl
y
connections are correct. If normal, the
g
reen power indicator will be illuminated. Connect the vehicle to
the external power suppl
y
of 120 volts. Turn the switch located
next to the thermostat to the "ON" position. Turn the thermostat
dial to the number "3" settin
g
. The unit should be operatin
g
. You
can hear the compressor sound b
y
placin
g
y
our ear next to the
refri
g
erator.
Allow approximatel
y
five minutes of operation and open the
freezer compartment door. Place
y
our hand at the upper left rear
corner of the coolin
g
plate. This is the area of the plate that will
be
g
in coolin
g
first. If
y
ou notice a coolin
g
effect at this point, then
the unit is functionin
g
properl
y
.
Close the refri
g
erator door and allow the refri
g
erator to operate
on AC until it c
y
cles or shuts itself off. This indicates the thermo-
stat is operatin
g
and that the refri
g
erator is coolin
g
on AC opera-
tion.
Now, disconnect the AC suppl
y
and open the refri
g
erator door so
that the cabinet interior will warm up and allow the thermostat to
demand coolin
g
.
As soon as the unit’s compressor be
g
ins to operate, close the
refri
g
erator door, allowin
g
the unit to run. It should shut off or c
y
cle
within 10 to 20 minutes indicatin
g
the DC operation is correct.
Special Requirements For
Marine Installations:
The DE-704D is internall
y
wired so that the AC and DC
circuits are isolated from each other. If the positive
(
+12 volts
)
DC input is
g
rounded in an
y
wa
y
(
cuts in the wire insulation,
improperl
y
insulated connections, etc.
)
, a volta
g
e potential
could be developed throu
g
hout the boat in which corrosion
develops on an
y
metal parts exposed to water.
This situation ma
y
be avoided b
y
wirin
g
the boat so that AC
and DC
g
rounds are common and wirin
g
is protected per
NNMA CERTIFICATION HANDBOOK
(
1987
)
. Inspect all wir-
in
g
to insure that insulation has not been dama
g
ed. Plastic
wire clamps are recommended.

MAINTENANCE OF YOUR REFRIGERATOR
Cleaning Cabinet and Door
Wipe with a soft, dr
y
cloth. To remove dirt, use a cloth mois-
tened b
y
a warm neutral deter
g
ent solution. Never use hot water.
After cleanin
g
, wipe with a dr
y
cloth.
CAUTION:
Never use a brush, powder soap, cleanser, acid, benzene,
g
asoline, or thinner. These tend to leave scratches on the coat-
in
g
.
Gasket (door cushion)
Wipe awa
y
dirt with a soft cloth moistened b
y
a neutral deter-
g
ent. Do not soak the cloth excessivel
y
. If water
g
ets inside, the
insulatin
g
effect ma
y
become temporaril
y
impaired.
Attachments
Wash all attachments in soap suds. Rinse and wipe clean with a
dr
y
cloth.
To Turn Off The Refrigerator
If
y
ou will not be usin
g
the refri
g
erator for a da
y
or two, turn the
thermostat knob to "1". For a lon
g
er period, set the On-Off switch
to "OFF" and disconnect power b
y
removin
g
the AC plu
g
from it’s
socket. Also, disconnect the DC power from it’s source.
When not in use, the refri
g
erator should be emptied, cleaned,
and dried, and the door left a
j
ar.
Defrosting
Set the On-Off switch to "OFF". When frost is melted, wipe the
compartment plates with a soft, dr
y
cloth. A better su
gg
estion is to
set the dial to "1" before
y
ou retire for the ni
g
ht. The frost will be
g
one the next mornin
g
.
Do not use sharp ob
j
ects to chip ice from the coolin
g
plates.
Information on battery power
The batter
y
power re
q
uired for the operation of the refri
g
erator is
dependent upon the number of DC appliances bein
g
used, the
t
y
pe of operation desired and c
y
clin
g
pattern desired.
A batter
y
must also be sufficientl
y
char
g
ed to prevent overdraw.
A batter
y
is rated usuall
y
in ampere-hours; that is, it is capable
of sustainin
g
it’s rated ampere capacit
y
for a period of one hour.
If the total ampera
g
e load of the vehicle is hi
g
h
(
25 amperes
)
,
then the installation of a 72 ampere-hour batter
y
will not provide
the re
q
uired power for an
y
len
g
th of time unless it is aided b
y
a
rechar
g
in
g
source such as an alternator or
g
enerator.
Various load re
q
uirements of the vehicle’s DC s
y
stem dictate the
ampere-hour capacit
y
that should be installed.
Refer to Fi
g
ure 3 for the su
gg
ested dual-batter
y
wirin
g
dia
g
ram.
You will note that in this dia
g
ram there are 2 separate batter
y
sources. One source is the vehicle or car batter
y
used exclusivel
y
for the operation of the en
g
ine and accessor
y
e
q
uipment such as
head li
g
hts. The other source is for the operation of the DC appli-
ances within the recreational vehicle or boat. This batter
y
source
is referred to as the accessor
y
or house batter
y
and is used solel
y
for that purpose.
Both of these batter
y
sources are char
g
ed b
y
one alternator or
g
enerator which is powered b
y
the vehicle en
g
ine. This char
g
in
g
device should be of ade
q
uate ampera
g
e ratin
g
so that a short
en
g
ine run will brin
g
the batteries up to full char
g
e. The standard
alternator has a minimum ratin
g
of 60 amperes.
Check
y
our volta
g
e re
g
ulator or cut-out for correct char
g
in
g
level.
Volta
g
e should be 13.5 to 14.5. volts to the batter
y
.

Important Points Regarding Battery-Powered
Sources
The dual batter
y
switch or batter
y
isolator is an important compo-
nent as it permits the alternator or
g
enerator to char
g
e both the
accessor
y
batter
y
and the vehicle batter
y
durin
g
operation of the
vehicle en
g
ine. However, it limits the current draw of the DC appli-
ances to the accessor
y
batter
y
source when the en
g
ine or vehicle
is idle or stopped. Thus it assures that the vehicle batter
y
is full
y
char
g
ed for startin
g
the en
g
ine. The batteries referred to in Fi
g
ure
3 are two 6 volt
g
olf cart batteries connected in series to provide
12 volts. Golf cart batteries are su
gg
ested for the followin
g
rea-
sons:
1. Lar
g
er plate construction.
2. Deep draw characteristics.
3. Hi
g
h ampere-hour ratin
g
.
The standard
g
olf cart batter
y
has a ratin
g
of approximatel
y
185-
205 ampere-hours. When two of these batteries are connected in
series, the result is 12 volt DC at 185 or 205 ampere-hour capac-
it
y
.
The DC suppl
y
to the refri
g
erator is connected to the ne
g
ative
post of one batter
y
and to the positive post of the other batter
y
.
The power converter or solid state batter
y
char
g
er shown in Fi
g
-
ure 3 is an essential item for batter
y
-operated s
y
stems.
The converter is operated on 120 volt AC and should have an
output ratin
g
of 12.6-l4.5 volts DC at approximatel
y
20-50 ampere
capacit
y
. Durin
g
120 volt operation, the converter is used to
char
g
e the batteries and to operate the DC appliances. It has the
capacit
y
to operate items such as li
g
htin
g
, water pumps, exhaust
fans, and sanitar
y
facilities while maintainin
g
or char
g
in
g
the bat-
teries. Char
g
in
g
rate varies from 5-20 amperes per hour.
The Norcold dual volta
g
e refri
g
erator automaticall
y
switches from
AC to DC or from DC to AC. When a power suppl
y
of 120 volts
AC is connected to the vehicle, the volta
g
e selection rela
y
is ener-
g
ized and disconnects the unit from DC operation. This uni
q
ue
feature assures 120 volt operation when available and permits the
power converter to concentrate it’s char
g
in
g
facilities to the batter-
ies or to other DC appliances.
When the AC suppl
y
is disconnected, the refri
g
erator automat-
icall
y
reverts to DC operation. Settin
g
the On-Off switch to the
"OFF" position will prevent operation on AC or DC.
The followin
g
are su
gg
estions for efficient operation of the refri
g
-
erator:
1. The thermostat dial is numbered from 1 throu
g
h 5, with the
number 5 settin
g
the maximum coldest position. In order to
conserve batter
y
power, it is advisable to set the thermostat
dial at the lowest settin
g
that will provide ade
q
uate refri
g
era-
tion. This practice will reduce the runnin
g
time of the refri
g
-
erator and draw less current from the batter
y
. A settin
g
of 2
or 3 is a normal position.
2. Alwa
y
s operate the refri
g
erator on 120 volts AC when avail-
able, especiall
y
durin
g
initial start-up or pull-down c
y
cle of
the refri
g
erator. Dependin
g
upon the ambient temperature,
the initial start-up ma
y
re
q
uire 1-2 hours of continuous op-
eration before refri
g
erator temperature are attained and unit
c
y
clin
g
be
g
ins.
3. Never emplo
y
"
q
uick-char
g
ers" to the batter
y
unless the On-
Off switch is set to the "OFF" position or the 12-volt DC
leads to the refri
g
erator are disconnected. Possible inverter
dama
g
e will occur if the hi
g
h volta
g
e of "
q
uick char
g
ers" is
permitted to ener
g
ize the DC circuits of the inverter.
4. The use of a commercial 12-volt DC to 120-volt DC solid
state inverter, converter,
g
