Quick Tips
Hot or cold dashi:
Wait about 20 seconds/Measure twice
This model features the Mode-S
technology for increased repeatability.
Displays stable measurements even on
hot or cold samples. To further improve
stability,try the following two points.
・ Allow about 20 seconds for the temperature of the
instrument and the sample to become acclimated
before measuring.
・ If the value stabilizes during measurement, stop the
measurement and press the START button again.
Oily samples: Stir
After applying the dashi to the prism, stir
with a chopstick or toothpick so as not
to scratch the prism. Concentration
refractometers use the principle of light
refraction. When the light hits oil, it
cannot measure accurately.
Samples with solids or particulates: Stir/Filter
As with oily samples, stable readings
may be achieved by stirring, but when
the dashi contains many solids, filter
using a tea strainer or something
similar.

Automatic Temperature Compensation
Concentration is dependent on temperature. This instrument has a
feature that displays the measurement at 20℃ when measurement
is taken within the temperature compensation range.
Example
When the sample acclimates to the temperature of the
instrument, the same value will display even when measurements
are taken at different temperatures. If a measurement is taken
when the instrument and soup have acclimated to the same
temperature, it will display the same measurement value, even at
different temperatures.
m
・Measurements may fluctuate with hot or cold samples. Wait for
approximately 20 seconds to press the START button.
Measurements will stabilize once the instrument acclimates to
the sample temperature.
・The displayed temperature is the internal temperature of the
sample stage of the instrument, shown as the sample’s
temperature.

Caution
・Do not splash water above 50℃. The plastic may
warp, which may compromise the water
resistance.
・When measuring hot samples, place only the
necessary amount and do not let it overflow from
the sample stage well. Using a small spoon, apply
only the amount of sample necessary to take a
measurement.
・When hot water is necessary to clean off
hardened samples, use water-soaked gauze
around the prism area and keep hot water away
from the body case.
・Do not use metal objects, such as spoons and
tweezers, on the prism.
Storage and Maintenance
Repair and Warranty

・Water damage or having been dropped.
・Having been misused and/or operated outside the environmental
specifications.
・Leakage from batteries other than those included with the unit.
Repair services are available for a fee after the warranty expires.
Contact an ATAGO for service and support.
Do not use organic solvents (paint thinner,
benzene, gasoline, etc.) on the plastic body
case.

・Some acids may corrode the glass prism and/or metal sample stage,
which may cause erroneous measurements.
Do not use metal tools, such as a spoon, as they may scratch the prism,
resulting in erroneous measurements.
・Do not use water above 50℃ to rinse the instrument.
・Only use the specified battery type. Observe proper polarities, properly
aligning the anodes and cathodes.
・Store the instrument away from direct sunlight/heat sources and
excessive amounts of dust/debris.
・Do not expose the instrument to a rapid change in ambient temperature.
・Do not subject the instrument to strong vibration.

<Chemical Resistance of Body Case> The body case is made of PC. Do
not expose it to water vapor or solvents. The body case may be damaged
by solvents.
・Fasten the battery compartment cover tightly
to prevent water ingress or poor connection,
which will cause erroneous measurements.
Push the cover in firmly and turn.
・There is an o-ring included with the cover.
When the O-ring on the cover is dirty or
damaged, the water resistance may be
compromised. Lubricate the O-ring regularly.
・Battery icon
When there is only one level remaining on the battery indicator,
replace both batteries with a brand new set of AAA alkaline
batteries (1.5V).
・Static images may occasionally appear on LCD. Such retained
pixel charges do not indicate a faulty display, consume the
battery power, or affect the instrument’s performance in any
way.
・Check the expiration dates on batteries before purchase.
・Zero-set the instrument after the batteries are replaced.
