OIL AND FUEL MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
-- I_L_ ARNING: It has been proven that fuel containing greater than
15% ethanol will likely damage this engine and void the warranty.
Old and/or improperly mixed fuel are the main reasons for the unit not
running properly. Be sure to use fresh, clean unleaded fuel. Follow the
instructions carefully for the proper
fuel/oil mixture, m
DEFINITION OF BLENDED FUELS _ _,_
Today's fuels are often a blend of gasoline
and oxygenates such as ethanol,
methanol, or MTBE (ether). Alcohol- ' '
blended fuel absorbs water. As little as 1% UNLEADEDGAS 2CYCLE OIL
water in the fuel can make fuel and oil
1 GALLON US 3.2 FL. OZ.
separate. It forms acids when stored. (3.8 LITERS) (95 ml)
When using alcohol-blended fuel, use fresh
1LITER 25 ml
fuel (less than 30 days old). MIXING RATIO - 40:1
USING BLENDED FUELS
_[__J CAUTION: For proper engine operation and maximum
reliability, pay strict attention to the oil and fuel mixing instructions
on the 2-cycle oil container. Using improperly mixed fuel can
severely damage the engine.
If choosing to use a blended fuel, or its use is unavoidable, follow
recommended precautions:
Always use the fresh fuel mix explained in the operator's manual
Always agitate the fuel mix before fueling the unit
Drain the tank and run the engine dry before storing the unit
USING FUEL ADDITIVES
The bottle of 2-cycle oil contains a fuel additive which will help inhibit
corrosion and minimize the formation of gum deposits. It is recommended
to use our 2-cycle oil with this unit.
If unavailable, use a good 2-cycle oil designed for air-cooled engines along
with a fuel additive, such as STA-BIL® Gas Stabilizer or an equivalent. Add
0.8 oz. (23 ml.) of fuel additive per gallon of fuel according to the
instructions on the container. NEVER add fuel additives directly to the unit's
fuel tank.
Thoroughly mix the proper ratio of 2-cycle engine oil with unleaded fuel in a
separate fuel can. Use a 40:1 fuel/oil ratio. Do not mix them directly in the
engine fuel tank. See the table for specific gas and oil mixing ratios.
NOTE: One gallon (3.8 liters) of unleaded fuel mixed with one 3.2 oz. (95
ml.) bottle of 2-cycle oil makes a 40:1 fuel/oil ratio.
NOTE: Dispose of the old fuel/oil mix in accordance to Federal, State and
Local regulations.
_ ARNING: Gasoline is extremely flammable. Ignited vapors
may explode. Always stop the engine and allow it to cool before
filling the fuel tank. Do not smoke while filling the tank. Keep
sparks and open flames at a distance from the area.
FUELING THE UNIT
-- U_L_ WARNING: Remove fuel cap slowly to avoid injury from fuel
spray. Never operate the unit without the fuel cap securely in place.
1. Remove the fuel cap.
_ ARNING: Add fuel in a clean, level and well ventilated
outdoor area. Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately. Avoid creating
a source of ignition for spilled fuel. Do not start the engine until
fuel vapors dissipate.
2. Place the gas container's spout into the fill hole on the fuel tank and fill
the tank.
NOTE: Do not overfill the tank.
3. Wipe up any gasoline that may have spilled.
4. Reinstall the fuel cap.
5. Move the unit at least 30 ft. (9.1 m) from the fueling source and site
before starting the engine.

HOLDING THE TRIMMER
-- i_[_ ARNING: Always wear eye, hearing, foot and body protection
to reduce the risk of injury when operating this unit.
Before operating the unit, stand in the
operating position (Fig. 9). Check for the
following:
The operator is wearing eye protection and
proper clothing
With a slightly-bent right arm, the operator's
right hand is holding the shaft grip
The operator's left arm is straight, the left
hand holding the handle
The unit is at waist level
The cutting attachment is parallel to the
ground and easily contacts the grass
without the need to bend over
Fig. 9
ADJUSTING TRIMMING LINE LENGTH
The cutting head allows the release of trimming line without stopping the
engine. To release more line, lightly tap the cutting attachment on the ground
(Fig. 10) while operating the trimmer at high speed.
NOTE: Always keep the trimming line fully
extended. Line release becomes
more difficult as the cutting line
becomes shorter.
Each time the head is bumped, about 1 inch
(25.4 mm) of trimming line is released. A
blade in the cutting attachment shield will cut
the line to the proper length if excess line is
released.
For best results, tap the cutting head on bare
Fig.1O
ground or hard soil. If line release is attempted in tall grass, the engine may
stall. Always keep the trimming line fully extended. Line release becomes
more difficult as the cutting line becomes shorter.
NOTE: Do not rest the cutting head on the ground while the unit is
running.
Some line breakage will occur from:
Entanglement with foreign matter
Normal line fatigue
Attempting to cut thick, stalky weeds
Forcing the line into objects such as walls or fence posts
TiPS FOR BEST TRIMMING RESULTS
Keep the cutting attachment parallel to the ground.
Do not force the cutting attachment. Allow the tip of the line to do the
cutting, especially along walls. Cutting with more than the tip will reduce
cutting efficiency and may overload the engine.
Cut grass over 8 inches (200 mm) by working from top to bottom in small
increments to avoid premature line wear or engine drag.
Slowly move the trimmer into and out of the cutting area at the desired
height. Move either in a forward-backward or side-to-side motion. Cutting
shorter lengths produces the best results.
Trim only when grass and weeds are dry.
The cutting head and shield are designed to allow the unit to cut in either
direction, from right to left or left to right.
The life of the cutting line is dependent upon:
Proper adherence of explained trimming techniques
- What vegetation is cut
- Where vegetation is cut
For example, the line will wear faster when trimming against a foundation
wall as opposed to trimming around a tree. \
DECORATIVE TRIMMING
Decorative trimming is accomplished by
removing all vegetation around trees, posts,
fences and more.
Rotate the whole unit so that the cutting
attachment is at a 30° angle to the ground
(Fig. 11).

NOTE: Make sure that when installing new line, that the line is as close to
even as possible. Any variation in lengths may cause the unit to
vibrate excessively. If this happens, stop the unit and make sure
the line is even.
7. Repeat steps 4 thru 6 to install the second trimmer line.
NOTE: Do not rest the Hassle-Free TM PLUS Cutting Head on the ground
while the unit is running.
Some line breakage will occur from:
Entanglement with foreign matter
Normal line fatigue
Attempting to cut thick, stalky weeds
Forcing the line into objects such as walls or fence posts
NOTE: During normal use the trimming line may become worn unevenly
which may cause excessive vibrations in the unit. Ifthis becomes
uncomfortable or uncontrollable, stop the unit and replace the line.
AiR FILTER MAINTENANCE
Cleaning the Air Filter
_[_ ARNING: To avoid serious personal injury, always turn the
unit off and allow it to cool before cleaning or maintaining it.
Clean and re-oil the air filter every 25 hours of operation. It is an important
item to maintain. Failure to maintain your air filter properly can result in poor
performance or can cause permanent damage to your engine.
1. Open the air filter cover. Tab Lock
Push the locking tab on the
top of the cover inward, then
pull the air filter cover out Air Filter
and down. (Fig. 25).
2. Remove the air filter (Fig. 25). Tab
3. Wash the filter in detergent
and water (Fig. 26). Rinse the Air Filter
filter thoroughly and allow it Cover
to dry. Fig.25

CARBURETORADJUSTMENT
The idle speed of the engine is
adjustable. An idle adjustment
screw is between the air filter
cover and the engine starter
housing (Fig. 29). Fig. 27
NOTE: Careless adjustments
can seriously damage
the unit. An authorized
service dealer should
make carburetor
adjustments.
Check Fuel Mixture
Old and/or improperly mixed fuel
is usually the reason for improper
unit performance. Drain and refill
the tank with fresh, properly- Fig. 28
mixed fuel prior to making any adjustments. Refer to Oil and Fuel
Information.
Clean Air Filter
The condition of the air filter is important to the operation of the unit. A dirty
air filter will restrict air flow and change the air/fuel mixture. This is often
mistaken for an out of adjustment carburetor. Check the condition of the air
filter before adjusting the idle speed screw. Refer to Air Filter Maintenance.
Adjust Idle Speed Screw
WARNING: The cutting attachment may spin during idle speed _
adjustments. Wear protective clothing and observe all safety
J
instructions to prevent serious personal injury.
If, after checking the fuel mixture and cleaning the air filter, the engine still
will not idle, adjust the idle speed screw as follows:
1.
2.
Start the engine and run for
one minute to warm up.
Refer to Starting/Stopping
Instructions.
Release the throttle trigger
and let the engine idle. If
the engine stops, insert a
small phillips screwdriver
into the idle adjustment
screw (Fig. 29). Turn the idle
speed screw clockwise 1/8

of a turn at a time (as needed) until the engine idles smoothly.
3. If the engine appears to be idling too fast, turn the idle speed screw
counterclockwise 1/8 of a turn at a time (as needed), to reduce idle
speed.
Checking the fuel mixture, cleaning the air filter and adjusting the idle speed
should solve most engine problems. If not and all of the following are true:
the engine will not idle
the engine hesitates or stalls on acceleration
there is a loss of engine power
Have the carburetor adjusted by an authorized service dealer.
REPLACING THE SPARK PLUG
Use replacement #753-06193, a Champion RDJSJ spark plug, or
equivalent. The correct air gap is 0.025 inch (0.635 ram). Remove the plug
after every 25 hours of operation and check its condition.
1. Stop the engine and allow it to cool. Grasp the plug wire firmly and pull
it from the spark plug.
2. Clean around the spark plug. Remove the spark plug from the cylinder
head by turning a 5/8-inch socket counterclockwise.
m
_L_ ARNING: Do not sand blast, scrape or clean spark plug
electrodes. Grit in the engine could damage the cylinder.
3. Replace a cracked, fouled or I I
dirty spark plug. Set the air
gap at 0.025 in. (0.635 mm)
using a feeler gauge (Fig. 30).
4. Install a correctly-gapped
spark plug in the cylinder
head. Tighten by turning the
5/8-inch socket clockwise
until snug. 0.025 in. _, .

CLEANING
m
_[_ ARNING: To avoid serious personal injury, always turn the
unit off and allow it to cool before cleaning or maintaining it.
Use a small brush to clean off the outside of the unit. Do not use strong
detergents. Household cleaners that contain aromatic oils such as pine and
lemon, and solvents such as kerosene, can damage plastic housing or
handle. Wipe off any moisture with a soft cloth.
STORAGE
Never store a fueled unit where fumes may reach an open flame or spark.
Allow the engine to cool before storing.
Store the unit locked up to prevent unauthorized use or damage.
Store the unit in a dry, well-ventilated area.
Store the unit out of the reach of children.
LONG TERM STORAGE
If planning on storing the unit for an extended time, use the following storage
procedure:
1. Drain all fuel from the fuel tank into a container with the same 2-cycle
fuel mixture. Do not use fuel that has been stored for more than 30
days. Dispose of the old fuel/oil mix in accordance to Federal, State
and Local regulations.
2. Start the engine and allow it to run until it stalls. This ensures that all
fuel has been drained from the carburetor.
3. Allow the engine to cool. Remove the spark plug and put 1 oz. (30 ml)
of any high quality motor oil or 2-cycle oil into the cylinder. Pull the
starter rope slowly to distribute the oil. Reinstall the spark plug.
NOTE: Remove the spark plug and drain all of the oil from the cylinder
before attempting to start the unit after storage.
4. Thoroughly clean the unit and inspect it for any loose or damaged
parts. Repair or replace damaged parts and tighten loose screws, nuts
or bolts. The unit is ready for storage.
