Effectivestripingisinuencedby
grassconditionandgrasstype
Limpgrasswherewheeltracksareveryvisibleis
usuallygoodforstriping.
Stiffgrasswherewheeltracksarelessvisiblewill
usuallyproducepoorstriping.
Coolseasongrasstypesfoundinnorthernareasare
usuallygoodforstriping.
Warmseasongrasstypesfoundinsouthernareas
willusuallyproducelesspronouncedstriping.
Transitionzonegrassesfoundinthenarrowbelt
regioncanproducegoodstripinginsomeareas
andsomeportionsofthegrowingseason,while
producingpoorstripinginotherareasorportions
oftheseason.
Somegrasstypesproducebetterstripingcontrast
whenmowingshort.Othergrasstypesor
moisturecontentofthegrasscanprovidebetter
contrastwhenmowingatalong/tallheightofcut.
Experimentwithwhatworksbestinyoursituation.
Stripingvisibilityisaffectedbythesun
position
Thisishowthelightisreectedonthegrass.
Mowingpatternswhichgenerallyruneast–westwill
haveagreatercontrastthannorth–southpatterns.
Thestripingpatterncontrastislessvisiblearound
noon,andismorevisibleinmorningsand
afternoons.
Stripingvisibilityisaffectedbyyour
position
Thegrasswhichisbenttowardsyouwillappeardarker,
andgrasswhichisbentawayfromyouwillappear
lighter.
Mowingpatternswhichgenerallyrunalongaroad
willhavegreatercontrastwhenviewedapproaching
orleavingtheproperty.Thecontrastofstriping
willbelessvisiblewhenlookingacrossthemowing
direction.
Ifthepropertyhasafocalpoint,oraviewing
location,itcanbebenecialtomowinapattern
thatisgenerallytoandfromtheobservationpoint.
Lawnconditionaffectsstriping
visibility
Largeatareasusuallyprovidebetterstriping
contrastthanonslopesorareaswithalotof
trimmingandedging.

Mowinginmorningdewcanproducegoodstriping
contrast.
Doublecutmowing,andmowingasecondpassat
a1/2inchlowerheightofcutcanproducegood
stripingcontrast.
Mowingmodecanaffectstriping
contrast
Sidedispersalofclippingscanhidestriping,
reducingthecontrasteffect.
Baggingcandisplayheavywheeltracks,reducing
theeffectofstriping.
Mulchingwilloftendisplayexcellentcontrast,
enhancingtheeffectofstriping.
Thelandscapecanpromoteorhinder
striping
Themowingareasizehasaneffectonthenal
appearance.Largeareascanlookbetterwhen
mowedwithalargemower.Smallareasmaynot
lookrightwhencutwithalargemower.
Largeareaswithoccasionaltreesorother
obstructionswilloftenlookbestwhenthemowing
patternappearstogothroughtheobstruction.For
example,itcanlookbestforapatterntomatch
andcontinueonthefarsideofasmallpond.A
differentcrosscutpatternonthefarsideofapond
maynotbevisible.
Someareaslookbestwithlongstraightlinesof
stripingmowingpattern,alignedwithaproperty
edge.Someareaslookbestwithadiamondpattern,
whereneitherstraightlineisalignedwiththe
propertyedge.Propertieswithrollinghillsidesor
pondscanlookbestwithaowingcurvesstriping
pattern.Adistinctivefeaturelikeasmallpondcan
behighlightedandenhancedbyaradialpatternor
byaringpattern.
Somelawnsneedtobetrainedtoshow
adistinctivestripingcontrast
Onanewpropertyduringweeks1and2,youmay
needtofollowtheexactsamepatternanddirection
inthesamewheeltracks.Thiswillbegintraining
thegrasstobendinthedesireddirection.
Onweek3useacross–grainstripingpattern.
Onweeks4and5followwithrepeatingtheoriginal
pattern.Aftertheprimarystripingpatterngrain
isestablished,youmayalternatethepatterneach
weektoestablishacheckerboardoraplaidstyleof
mowingpattern.
Donotmowintheexactsamepatterneveryweek.
Thiswillcausecompactioninwheeltracks,andmay
producerutsordepressionsalongthewheeltracks.
Turningwhileusingthestripingkit
Raisetherollerwhenturning.Stripingisgenerally
notenhancedbyendturns.
Raisingtherollerwillreduceconfusingthepattern
attheendsofthepattern.
Drivingthemachinetodifferentcutting
areas
Raisetherollerandthedeckanddrivealonga
previouscutpathtotransportfromoneareaofthe
propertytoanothersection.
Anicestripingpatterncanberuinedbydriving
acrossthepattern.
Followallgeneralmowingcommon
practices
Itisusuallybesttorstmowtheperimeterto
establishaboundary.
Whensidedischarging,theclippingsshouldbe
directedawayfromwalks,drives,owerbeds,
buildingsandvehicles.Ifthedischargethrows
clippingsalongdistance,mowadditionalpassesto
avoidunwantedcleanupofclippings.
Avoidexcessivedrivingbackwards.Drivingback
andforth,frequentforwardandreversemaneuvers
aroundanobstaclewillcompressthegrassand
disturbtheprofessionalappearanceofanicejob.
Avoidclosetrimmingwiththestripingkitinstalled
toreducedamagetolandscapingandtheroller.
Followallsafemowingpracticesasdescribeinthe
Operator’sManual.Donotletthestripingpattern
causeyoutomowintoahazardoussituation.
