Introduction
The Vinten Active Serial Box (Fig 1) has been designed to integrate with the Vector 950 OE pan and tilt
head and suitable camera lenses, to process precise real-time digital electronic positioning which greatly
reduces unwanted image movement from a shot.
The Active Serial Box mounts directly to the Vector 950 OE pan and tilt head, receiving power from either
the camera or an optional power supply (4), and encoder positional data from the Vector 950 OE pan and
tilt head while supplying the Canon lens with image stabilising data.
English
12
Operation
Installing the Active Serial Box
The Vinten Active Serial Box seamlessly integrates with a Vector 950 OE pan and tilt head. Please refer
to the Vector 950 OE operators guide for detail on safely setting up the pan and tilt head (see Associated
Publication on page 9).
Fitting to the head
The Active Serial Box is supplied with a head mounting bracket (8) which attaches to fixing holes on the
underside of the pan and tilt head. There are two methods of mounting this bracket, one for permanent
fixing, and another for quick release.
To permanently mount the Active Serial Box to a Vector 950 OE pan and tilt head, proceed as follows:
Position the head mounting bracket (8) as shown in (Fig 2) and attach securely in place using the
two countersunk fixing screws (13).
For quick release mounting of the Active Serial Box to a Vector 950 OE pan and tilt head, proceed as fol-
lows:
Loosely fit the two quick release fixing screws and washers (9) in the positions shown in (Fig 3),
engaging the threads by a couple of turns. Engage the lead mounting slot (8.1) beneath the fixing
screw and washer (9) as shown in (Fig 3).
Rotate the head mounting bracket (8) to engage the radial mounting slot (8.2).
Tightly secure both quick release fixing screws (9) using a suitable spanner or screwdriver.
To remove the quick release head mounting bracket, reverse the mounting procedure.
Power connection
12-volt power from the camera’s DC output port is connected to the power input socket (7) using the DC
power cable (refer to Parts List on page 15). Alternatively, mains power may be used with the optional
power supply unit (4), mounted to the underside of the Active Serial Box with two PSU mounting brackets
(5) and secured with four fixing screws. For clarification of system cable connections refer to (Fig 4) on
page 116.
Head encoder connection
Connect the head encoders port (11) to the encoder connector on the Vector 950 OE pan and tilt head,
using the head encoder cable. For more information please refer to the Vector 950 OE Operators Guide
(Publication Part No. V3984-4980) and the Parts List on page 15. For clarification of system cable con-
nections refer to (Fig 4) on page 116.
Lens serial connection
Connect the lens serial port (12) to the virtual port on the Canon lens, using the appropriate lens cable (Re-
fer to Parts List on page 15). For clarification of system cable connections refer to (Fig 4) on page 116.
WARNING! Do NOT attempt to lift and carry the pan and tilt head via the head mounting
bracket (8).
English
13
Network / system configuration connection
The network/system configuration port allows trained service personnel to update the system software. For
more information, please refer to the Active Serial Box Maintenance Manual (Publication Part No. V4039-
4990).
Switching on
Once all connections have been made, the Active Serial Box can be switched on using the power switch
(10). Once unit switched on, the 12-volt and 5-volt power indicators (1), (2)
will illuminate. The status indi-
cator will initially illuminate steady green, and then begin flashing to signify successful communication with
the lens. If the connection is lost, the status indicator will flash red until communication is re-established.
English
14
Servicing
General
The Vinten Active Serial Box is robustly made to high engineering standards and little attention is required
to maintain serviceability save regular cleaning.
Refer to the appropriate section in the Maintenance Manual if any defect is apparent. Adjustments and re-
pairs should be carried out only by a competent person.
Routine checks
During use, check the following:
Check that cables do not become entangled around the pan axis. Rotate the Vector 950 OE head
as necessary to free the cables.
Check that all cables are connected properly. Re-fit cables if necessary.
No further routine maintenance is required.
Cleaning
During normal use the only cleaning required should be a regular wipe over with a lint-free cloth. Dirt ac-
cumulated during storage or periods of disuse may be removed with a semi-stiff brush. Particular attention
should be paid to all the connection ports (6), (7), (11), (12).
Use out-of-doors under adverse conditions may require special attention and the Active Serial Box should
be covered when not in use. Salt spray should be washed off using fresh water at the earliest opportunity.
Sand and dirt act as an abrasive and should be removed using a semi-stiff brush or a vacuum cleaner.
Adjustments
Other than periodically re-tightening the mounting screws (9), (13) no other adjustments are required.
WARNING! Disconnect power before cleaning the product.
CAUTION! 1. Use only detergent-based cleaners.
2. DO NOT use solvent or oil-based cleaners, abrasives or wire brushes to remove
accumulations of dirt as these damage the protective surfaces.
3. External electrical connection ports should only be cleaned with a semi-stiff brush
or a clean, dry air supply.
