FREEZER STYLES

Freezers come in various styles from Chest, Upright, and Built-In Column

to Under Counter and Drawer. You will have to consider where the freezer will be

placed and how much food you plan on storing. These decisions will

determine the style of freezer you purchase.

Chest Freezer

This style of freezer opens from the top

and can accommodate some of those

bulkier items. Chest freezers generally take

up more space and have a lower price tag.

Chest freezers take a little more to organize,

but pull-out drawers and sliding baskets can

help you keep an eye on your frozen items to

prevent spoilage.

Their design allows the door to seal more tightly

providing a more efcient operation and stays colder

should a power outage occur. All chest freezers

are manual defrost making placement a little more

limited as it should be placed by a drain for easier

water management. Freezers should be kept away

from heat sources and out of direct sunlight.

Upright Freezer

This style of freezer opens like a refrigerator

and includes a variety of shelves and storage

drawers. This design keeps you better organized

so you know what you have on hand preventing

food getting lost in the back and spoiling. Upright

freezers come in various sizes and capacities,

and you can choose manual defrost or frost-

free congurations. Manual defrost freezers are

more energy efcient making defrosting easier.

This style of unit takes up less oor space for

easier placement. Freezers should be kept away

from heat sources and out of direct sunlight.

Built-in Column Freezer

Built in freezers come in different sizes and

allows you to integrate different options in your

kitchen. Different size column refrigerators and

freezers can be installed separately or paired, for

example you may have a refrigerator & freezer

set with a 36” refrigerator and 24” freezer, or

opt to have the same size for both at 36” for

example. Finish them with stainless-steel door

panels or customize to match your own kitchen

cabinetry.

Under Counter Freezer

An under-counter freezer is a compact freezing

unit that ts snugly under the standard kitchen

countertop. This unit is normally the same size

as the standard under counter dishwasher. This

type of freezer is capable of performing all the

functions of larger freezer units, with the only

real difference being the amount of frozen items

the unit can hold. A single door swings outward

to allow access to the interior. Inside, removable

shelves provide a means of organizing frozen

foods. Some units may be equipped with storage

baskets as well.

Drawer Freezer

Add more exibility to your kitchen space.

Freezer drawers can feature, one, two or even

three drawers that can be opened in a manner

similar to cabinet drawers in most kitchens. With

multiple drawers you can place meats in one

drawer, and frozen vegetables in the other for

example. With this type of arrangement, it makes

it very easy to retrieve the right type of frozen

food when preparing a meal. Available in custom

colours and nishes.

Convertible Fridge Freezer

The idea behind a convertible refrigerator is

to convert and control two compartments of

refrigerator – fridge, being the main unit and

freezer being the smaller unit on top. If you need

more fridge space simply convert the freezer

compartment to a fridge by using the digital

display and press Freezer to Fridge button, now

the freezer becomes a fridge. Press it again

(Fridge to Freezer) to convert back to freezer.

Adjustable Shelves

Allowing for customization of your freezer.

Automatic Defrost (frost free)

These freezers cost more to run having a

heater than runs 2-3 times a day to defrost the

evaporator. The moisture usually drains into a

try underneath the freezer. This does not affect

the frozen foods inside the freezer.

Chest Rollers

Depending on your model your chest freezer

may come with casters (wheels) that can be

installed on installation for easy moving of the

unit. Some models could have 4 casters or

have 2 rear rollers and front leveling legs.

Energy Ecient

Look for a freezer with an Energy Star rating.

These are approximately 10% more energy

efcient than the minimum standard. Keep in

mind the larger the freezer the more energy it

will use. A manual defrost freezer uses half as

much energy than an automatic defrost model

(but you need to defrost periodically).

Freezer Lock

Keep little hands out of the freezer, keep it locked.

Also prevents from accidentally leaving the door

open and spoiling food.

Interior

Make sure you look in the freezer to see what

bins/baskets are available or organizing your

freezer foods. Upright freezers may have glass or

wire shelving, as well as door shelves.

Interior Lights

This is a nice feature with larger freezers so you

can see easier what is inside.

Manual Defrost

Many chest freezers are manual defrost. This

process should be done once or twice a year or if

you see an ice buildup. Everything must be taken

out of the freezer and unplugged so the buildup

of ice can melt.

Power Indicator Light

Located on the exterior of the freezer. An easy

way to make sure your freezer is getting power.

Soft Freeze Section

Some upright freezers have this feature. It is a

covered bin that stays a little warmer than the

rest of the freezer.

Temperature Alarm

Some models have an audible alarm to alert you

if the interior temperature of the freezer is too

warm.

Temperature Controls

Can be located inside or outside of the freezer

and be digital or dial controls.

PLACEMENT / USE

You will want to avoid placing your freezer too close to a heat source, such as an oven, window with

direct sunlight and even in a garage (check to see if the model you like is suitable for garage storage).

If you purchase a manual defrost, make sure you place the freezer near a drain for easier

defrosting. Keep in mind bigger is not always better, freezers less than 2/3 full use more

energy, so an understocked freezer will cost you more in the long run.
