B.GeneralWarnings
IV.WARNINGS
WARNING:Donotexceedtheweightlimitof250pounds(350poundsfor
heavydutyoption)fortheTsunami/LittleWave.Thisisthecombinedweight
ofuserandallitemscarried.Exceedingtheweightlimitcancausedamageto
yourchairorincreasethelikelihoodofafallortipbackresultinginsevere
injuryordeathtotheuserorothers.
DANGER:Donotusethischairforweighttraining.Themovementofthe
additionalweightwillalterthecenterofgravityofthewheelchairincreasingthe
likelihoodofatipoverwhichcancausedamagetoyourchairorcausesevere
injuryordeathtotheuserorothers.
WARNING:Ifyourwheelchairisequippedwithinflatabletires,makesure
thetireshavebeeninflatedtothecorrecttirepressureasindicatedonthe
sidewallofthetire.Yourwheelchairprovidercandetermineifyouhave
inflatabletires.Usingyourwheelchairwithoutproperlyinflatedtirescanhave
aneffectonthestabilityofthewheelchaircausingittotipoverresultingin
deathorinjurytotheuserorothers.
DANGER:Donotattempttopushyourwheelchairupordownrampsor
traverseacrossaslopeofgreaterthan9degrees.Thisisdangerousand
increasesthelikelihoodofafallortipbackresultinginsevereinjuryordeathto
theuserorothers.
WARNING:Donotattempttopushyourwheelchairupaninclinethatisslick
orcoatedwithice,oilorwater.Thiscancauseanunstablesituationresultingin
deathorinjurytotheuserorothers.
WARNING:Donotleanoverthesideorbackofthewheelchairtoextend
yourreach.Thismaycauseyoutofalloutofthewheelchairorthewheelchair
totipoverresultingininjuryordeath.
DANGER:Donotattempttotheliftthewheelchairbyholdingontoremovable
partssuchasthearmsorfootrests.Onlyliftthewheelchairbyholdingontothe
frame.Thismaycauseafallorlossofcontrolandresultinseriousinjuryordeath.
CAUTION:Donotovertightentheboltsandhardwarethatattachvarious
componentstogetherontheframe.Thiscouldcauseseriousdamageandaf
fectthesafetyanddurabilityofthewheelchair.

C.PositioningBelts
Positioningbeltsaredesignedtoassistwithproperpositioningwithinthe
wheelchair.Theyarenotdesignedasseatbelts.UsepositioningbeltsONLY
tohelpsupporttheuser’sposture.Misuseofpositioningbeltsmaycausese
vereinjurytoordeathoftheuser.
 Ensuretheuserdoesnotslideunderneaththepositioningbeltinthe
wheelchairseat.Ifthisoccurs,theuser’sbreathingmaybehampered
causingdeathorseriousinjury.
 Thepositioningbeltshouldhaveasnugfit;tightenoughtoholdtheirposi
tion,butnotsotightastorestrictbreathing.Youshouldbeabletoslide
yourhandbetweenthepositioningbeltandtheuser.
 NEVERUsePositioningBelts:
a)Asarestraint.Arestraintrequiresadoctor’sorder.
b)Onauserwhoisunconscious.
c)Asanoccupantrestraintinamotorvehicle.Apositioningbeltisnotde
signedtoreplaceaseatbeltthatisattachedtotheframeofavehicle,
whichwouldberequiredofaneffectiveseatbelt.Duringasuddenstop,
withtheforceofthestop,theuserwouldbethrownforward.Wheelchair
seatbeltswillnotpreventthis,andfurtherinjurymayresultfromthebelts
orstraps.
DANGER:Failuretocomplywiththeinstructionabovecouldresultinserious
injuryordeath.

D.RidingYourWheelchair
Yourchairisdesignedforuseonsolid,flatsurfacessuchasconcrete,asphalt
andflooring.Usecautionifyoupushyourwheelchaironawetorslicksurface.
WARNING:Donotpushyourchairinsand,loosesoiloroverroughterrain.
Thismaycausealossofstabilityandresultinafallorlossofcontroland
causeseriousinjuryordeath.
DANGER:Inmoststates,wheelchairsarenotlegalforuseonpublicroads.If
youfindyoumustpushonapublicroad,bealerttothedangerofmotor
vehicles.Useofawheelchaironapublicroadcancauseseriousinjuryordeath.
WARNING:Obstaclesandroadhazards(suchaspotholesandbroken
pavement)candamageyourchairandmaycauseafall,tipoverorlossof
control.Failuretocomplywiththisinstructioncouldresultinseriousinjuryor
death.
DANGER:Donotrideyourwheelchaironanescalator.Useofawheelchairon
anescalatorcancauseseriousinjuryordeath.
Tominimizetheserisks:
1)Keepalookoutfordangerscantheareawellaheadofyourchairasyouride.
2)Makesurethefloorareaswhereyouliveandworkarelevelandfreeof
obstacles.
3)Removeorcoverthresholdstripsbetweenrooms.
4)Installarampatentryorexitdoors.Makesurethereisnotadropoffat
thebottomoftheramp.
5)Tohelpcorrectyourcenterofbalance:
a)LeanyourupperbodyFORWARDslightlyasyougoUPoveran
obstacle.
b)PressyourupperbodyBACKWARDasyougoDOWNfromahigher
toalowerlevel.
1)Ifyourchairhasantitiptubes,locktheminplacebeforeyougoUPover
anobstacle.
2)Keepbothofyourhandsonthehandrimsasyougooveranobstacle.
3)Neverpushorpullonanobject(suchasfurnitureoradoorjamb)to
propelyourchair.
4)Donotoperateyourwheelchaironroads,streetsorhighways
5)Donotattempttopushoverobstacleswithoutassistance.

F.AscendingStairs
 Haveatleasttwopeople,whohavesufficientstrengthandskilltohandle
theweightoftheuserandwheelchair,assistwhentryingtogoupasetof
stairsinthiswheelchair.
 Movethewheelchairanduserbackwardsupthestairs.
 Positiononepersonbehindtheuserandonepersoninfrontoftheuser.
Thepersoninfrontmustholdontoanonremovablepartofthewheelchair.
 Therearattendanttiltsthechairbackandtheybothlifttogether.Takeone
stepatatime.
 Thismayrequiretheantitipsbeflippeduporremoved.Makesuretheanti
tipsarereattachedorflippedbackdownbeforeusingthewheelchair.
E.PowerDrives
KiMobilitydoesnotrecommendtheinstallationofpowerdrivesystemson
anyTsunamiorLittleWavewheelchair.
Tsunami/LittleWavewheelchairshavenotbeendesignedortestedaspower
wheelchairs.IfyouaddapowerdrivesystemtoaTsunamiorLittleWave
wheelchair,besurethemanufacturerofthepowerdrivesystemhasvalidated
andapprovedthecombinationofthepowerdrivesystemandTsunamiorLittle
Wavewheelchairsassafeandeffective.
WARNING:Useofapowerdrivesystemthathasnotbeenproperlyvalidated
couldresultinseriousinjuryordeath.
DANGER:Failuretocomplywiththeinstructionsabovecouldresultin
seriousinjuryordeath.
G.DescendingStairs
 Whendescendingasetofstairstheusershouldbefacingforward.
 Apersonbehindtheuser,whohassufficientstrengthandskilltohandle
theweightoftheuserandthewheelchair,shouldtiltthechairbackward
andletthechairdownthestairsonestepatatimeontherearwheels.
 Thismayrequirethatantitipsbeflippeduporremoved.Makesurethe
antitipsarereattachedorflippedbackdownbeforeusingthewheelchair.
DANGER:Failuretocomplywiththeinstructionsabovecouldresultin
seriousinjuryordeath.

I.YourWheelchairandtheEnvironment
 Yourwheelchairismadeofmanydifferentmaterialsincludingmetaland
fabric.Exposuretowaterorexcessivemoisturemaycausethemetalinthe
wheelchairtorustorcorrodeandthefabrictotear.Dryyourchairassoon
aspossibleifexposedtowater.
 DONOTUSEYOURWHEELCHAIRINASHOWER,POOLORBODYOF
WATER.Thiswillcauseyourwheelchairtorustorcorrodeandeventuallyfail.
 Donotoperateyourwheelchairinsand.Sandcangetintothewheel
bearingsandmovingparts.Thiswillcausedamageandeventuallywill
causethewheelchairtofail.
 Makesureanyramp,slopeorcurbcutyoumayattempttorideonis
compliantwithADAguidelines.Ridingacross,upordownanyslopethatis
toogreatmaycausealossofstability.

H.Transfers
Atransferrequiresgoodbalanceandstability.Youshouldreceivetrainingfrom
yourtherapistbeforeattemptingtodoatransferonyourown.
 Beforetransferringoutofyourwheelchaireverycautionshouldbetakento
reducethegapbetweenthetwosurfaces.
 Engagethewheellockstolocktherearwheels.
 Rotatethecastersforwardtoincreasethewheelbaseofthewheelchair.
 Removeorswingawaythefootrests.
 Havesomeoneassistyouunlessyouarewellexperiencedintransfers.
Itisdangeroustotransferonyourown.Itrequiresgoodbalanceandagility.
Beawarethereisapointduringeverytransferwhenthewheelchairseatis
notbelowyou.
WARNING:Failuretoperformatransferproperlycanresultinafallandcan
causesevereinjuryordeath.
WARNING:Failuretocomplywiththeinstructionsabovemaycauseafallor

K.WheelchairStability
Toensureproperstability,ofyourwheelchairyoumustmakesurethecenterof
gravityandthewheelchairsbaseofsupportiscorrectforyourbalanceand
abilities.Manyfactorscanaffectthesetwoelements;
 Seatheight
 Seatdepth
 Backangle
Generally,themostimportantfactoristhepositionoftherearwheelsforrear
wardstability.Thereareotheractionsthancanhaveanadverseeffectonyour
stability.Youshouldconsultwithyourwheelchairproviderandcliniciansfamiliar
withyourneedsandcapabilitiesindetermininghowthisaffectsyouruse.
J.ModifyingyourWheelchair
Yourwheelchairwasengineeredandmanufacturedunderstrictdesign
controls.Anintegralpartofthisprocessisensuringthevariouscomponents
worktogethercorrectly;theyhavebeentestedtovariousstandardstoensure
qualityandareapprovedtoworktogether.
NOONESHOULDMODIFYTHISWHEELCHAIREXCEPTBYASSEMBLING
APPROVEDOPTIONS.THEREARENOAPPROVEDOPTIONSTHAT
INVOLVEDRILLINGORCUTTINGTHEFRAMEBYANYONEOTHERTHAN
ATRAINEDKIMOBILITYASSOCIATE.ContactKiMobilityoranauthorized
KiMobilitysupplierbeforeaddinganyaccessoriesorcomponentsnot
providedbyKiMobility
DANGER:Failuretocomplywiththeseinstructionsmaycausethewheelchair
tofailandresultinseriousinjuryordeath.
Movingtherearwheelsforwardincreasesthelikelihoodofthewheelchair
tippingbackwards.Makesmalladjustmentsandproceedslowlyuntilyoulearn
thenewbalancepointofyourwheelchair.Failuretocomplytotheinstruction
abovecouldresultinseriousinjuryordeath.
Thefartherrearwardyouplacethefrontcastersthegreaterthelikelihoodof
thewheelchairtippingforwards.Ifpossible,haveyourcastersmountedforward
and,wheneverdoingastaticactivitywhichinvolvesshiftingyourweight,rotate
thecastersforwardtoincreaseyourwheelbase.Failuretocomplytothisin
structionabovecouldresultinseriousinjuryordeath.
Alwayshaveaqualifiedtechniciansetupyourwheelchairwiththeaccesso
riesyouplantousedaily.
Changestohowyousitorchangesinyourweightrequireyourchairtobere
adjustedbyaqualifiedtechnician.Alwaysuseantitipswhileyouacclimateto
anychangesinyourchairsetup.Failuretocomplytotheinstructionabove
couldresultinseriousinjuryordeath.

Itisalwayssafesttotransferoutofyourwheelchairontoaseatinamotor
vehiclewithappropriateseatandshoulderbelts.Neverusethiswheelchairasa
seatinamotorvehicleunlessithasbeenequippedwiththeTransitOption.
TheTsunamiSeries/LittleWaveSerieswheelchairequippedwiththeTransit
OptionhasbeentestedtoandpassedtheRESNAWC4:2012,Section19:
WheelchairsusedasseatsinmotorvehiclesandISO717619:2008
Wheelchairs‐‐Part19:Wheeledmobilitydevicesforuseasseatsinmotor
vehicles.RESNAandISOstandardsaredesignedtotestthestructural
integrityofthewheelchairasaseatforuseinamotorvehicle.These
standardsarealsodesignedtocreatecompatibilitywithWheelchairTiedown
andOccupantRestraintSystems(WTORS).
NotallconfigurationsoftheTsunamiSeries/LittleWaveSerieswheelchairsare
compatiblewiththeTransitOption.KiMobilitymanagestheconfigurationand
doesnotoffertheTsunamiSeries/LittleWaveSerieswheelchairexceptin
compatibleconfigurations.IfyoumakechangestoyourTsunamiSeries/Little
WaveSerieswheelchairafteryourreceiveit,youshouldcontactyourwheelchair
providerorKiMobilitytomakesureitisappropriatetocontinuetouseyour
wheelchairasaseatinamotorvehicle.
IfyourTsunamiSerieswheelchairisequippedwiththeHeavyDutyOptionand
theTransitOptionyoushouldnotuseitasaseatinamotorvehicleifyouweigh
morethan125lbs.
Aftermarketseatingmayhavereplacedtheoriginalequipmentseatandback
supportdesignedandtestedaspartoftheTransitOption.Yourwheelchair
providershouldtellyouiftheseatingtheyprovidedisoriginalequipmentor
replacementaftermarketseating.Acompletesystemofwheelchairframe,seating,
WheelchairTiedownandOccupantRestraintSystemsandaproperlyequipped
motorvehicle,thathaveallcompliedwiththestandardsmentionedinthissection,
shouldbeinplacebeforeusingaTsunamiSerieswheelchairequippedwiththe
TransitOptionasaseatinamotorvehicle.
Whenusingyourwheelchairasaseatinamotorvehicleyoushouldalways
observethefollowinginstructions:
 Theridermustbeinaforwardfacingposition.
 Theridermustnotweighmorethan125lbs.
 Backpacksandpouchesshouldberemovedandsecuredseparatelyinthe
motorvehicle.Intheeventofanaccidenttheseitemscanbecome
dangerousprojectiles,whichmayinjureorkillyouorotheroccupantsofthe
motorvehicle.
 TheridermustuseaWheelchairTiedownandOccupantRestraintSystem
thatcomplieswithRESNAWC4:2012,Section18:Wheelchairtiedown

affectedbyotherforcesactingonyouandyourwheelchairsuchassomeone
pushingdownorleaningonyourpushhandlesorotherpartsofyourchair.
Thiscanhappentoeventhemostexperiencedwheelchairuser.Peopleinyour
environmentdonotnecessarilyunderstandtheyareimpactingyourstability.
