3 General safety
Please read all safety instructions and directions. Failure to comply with the safety instructions and
directions can cause electric shock, fire and/or serious injuries. Please retain all safety instructions and
directions for future reference.
3.1 Intended use
The machine is designed exclusively for processing solid wood, using heavy-duty reversible blades.
Use only clamping jaws, blade carriers and reversible blades that are approved by the manufacturer.
3.2 Foreseeable misuse
The machine is not intended for any other use than the intended use listed above.
The manufacturer is not liable for any damage resulting from such other use.
To use the machine as intended, comply with the operating, maintenance and repair conditions specified by
MAFELL.
Foreseeable misuse also includes:
- Tampering with, removing and/or bypassing safety devices of any kind.
- Operating the machine without safety devices.
- Non-observance of safety and warning instructions in the operating instructions.
- Removing the safety and warning labels from the machine.
- Operating the machine by unauthorized persons.
- Failure to follow prescribed maintenance and care instructions.

3.3 Safety instructions
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS!
Non-observance of the instructions listed below can cause electric shock, fire and/or serious injuries
.
Work area
- Children and adolescents are not allowed to operate this machine.
- When using the machine outdoors, the use of an earth leakage circuit breaker is recommended.
- Replace damaged cables or plugs immediately. To avoid safety hazards, only MAFELL or an authorized
MAFELL service workshop is allowed to replace parts.
- Prevent sharp kinks of the cable. Do not wrap the cable around the machine, especially when transporting
and storing the machine.
- Do not use this machine when you are tired, or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medicaments. Be
aware of what you are doing. Stay alert and use common sense.
- Keep children and bystanders at a distance while you are operating the machine. Distractions can cause
you to lose control of the machine.
- Use eye protection, dust mask and hearing protection. Appropriate safety equipment, used
under proper conditions, will reduce the risk of injuries.
Instructions for service and maintenance:
- Cleaning the machine regularly, especially the adjustment elements and the guiding devices, is an important
safety factor.
- Ensure that only genuine MAFELL spare parts and accessories are used. Failure to do so will make
warranty claims and the liability of the manufacturer null and void.
- Prepare a periodic maintenance schedule for your machine. When you clean the machine, be careful
not to disassemble any part of the machine. Reassembling the machine bears the risk that internal
wires are routed incorrectly or pinched, or that return springs of the safety device are mounted
incorrectly. Certain cleaning agents, such as gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, ammonia, etc. can damage
plastic parts.
- Some of the dust produced by sawing, sanding, drilling and other building work contains chemicals
known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these
chemicals are:
- Lead from lead-based paints,
- Crystalline silica from bricks and cement and other masonry products,
- Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated wood.
Your risk from this hazard varies with the frequency at which you perform this type of work. To reduce your
exposure to these chemicals: Work in a well-ventilated area. Work only with approved safety equipment,
such as dust masks that are specially designed to filter out particles of microscopic size.

3.4 Specific safety rules
Sawing method
- Wait for the cutter top stop before setting the tool down. An exposed rotating cutter may engage the
surface leading to possible loss of control and serious injury.
- Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces, because the cutter may contact its own cord.
Cutting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool “live” and could give the operator an
electric shock.
- Use clamps or another practical way to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform.
Holding the workpiece by your hand or against the body leaves it unstable and may lead to loss of control.
- Never reach into the planer shaft or chip ejector while the machine is running.
- Hold the machine tight and support it before you switch it on.
- Ensure that you stand in an unobstructed and non-slip area with adequate lighting.
- Always pull out the power plug before you change tools, make adjustments, or eliminate malfunctions (this
also includes removing trapped chips).
- Never clamp the operating lever.
- Never work on workpieces that are too small or too large for the machine capacity.
- Do not start planing the workpiece before the planing shaft has reached its full rotational speed.
- While you are planing, ensure that the connecting cable always runs towards the rear, away from the
machine.
- Check the workpiece for foreign bodies. Do not plane over metal parts, such as nails.
- Uniform and steady feed during planing increases the service life of blades and machine and reduces the
risk of accidents. Never plane backwards or in a plunging process!
- The planing blades must be turned or changed in good time, as blunt blades not only increase the risk of
kickback, but also put unnecessary strain on the motor.
- Use a suitable tool, such as a piece of wood, to clean a clogged hose connector. Never reach into the
discharge connector.

3.5 Safety devices
Danger
Risk of injury from missing safety devices
These devices are necessary for the safe operation of the machine. They must
not be removed or rendered ineffective.
Check the proper functioning of the safety devices before you start
operating the machine.
Never use the machine with missing or ineffective safety devices.
The machine is equipped with the following safety devices:

3.6 Residual risks
Warning
Risk of injury when working with the machine
Even when the machine is used as intended and in compliance with the safety
regulations, there are still residual risks caused by the intended use, which can
have consequences for your health.
Observe the safety instructions and information in these instructions.
Always be extremely careful and cautious when you work with the machine.
The existing residual risks include:
- Touching the running planing shaft below the base plate.
- Touching the sharp planing blades when the planing shaft is stopped.
- Touching the sharp planing blade edges when changing blades.
- Touching the running planing shaft through the chip ejector.
- Ejected improperly inserted planing blades.
- Breakage and ejected planing blade fragments.
- Machine or workpiece flung away during insert planing.
- Impaired hearing when working without hearing protection for long periods of time.
- Emission of harmful wood dusts during longer operation without extraction.
4 Setup / adjustment
4.1 Mains connection
Prior to starting up the machine, check to ensure that the mains voltage corresponds to the operating voltage
specified on the rating plate of the machine.
4.2 Routing of the connecting cable
Warning
Electric shock when cutting into the connecting cable
The connecting cable can impair safety functions and work functions and
get into contact with the cutting tool. Cutting into the connecting cable of
the machine puts the metal parts of the machine under tension and
causes an electric shock. There is a risk of injury for the user.
When working, pay attention to the way the connecting cable is
routed.
Never cut into the connecting cable of your machine.

4.3 Chip extraction
Caution
Health hazards from wood dust
The dusts produced during work can be inhaled and can cause health damage.
Harmful dust must be extracted with a HEPA 13 dust extractor.
Wear a dust mask during work.
The carpenter's planer is designed such that proper chip ejection is ensured when planing at proper feed rate
and fully utilized planing width. In this process, the chips are ejected sideways so that the view of the
workpiece is not obstructed.
For all work that produces a significant amount of dust, connect the machine to a suitable external extraction
device. The air velocity must be at least 20 m/s [65 ft/sec].
The inside diameter of the hose connector is 75 mm [2.95 in].
4.4 Blade change
Caution
Risk of injury from the tool
The blades on the planing shaft are sharp. You can hurt yourself when you work
on the tool.
Wear protective gloves when you handle the tool.
Be careful when you handle the tool.
Sharp planing blades guarantee a proper planing result and put less strain on the motor. Therefore, replace or
turn blunt planing blades in time.

Use the following procedure to change or turn
the planing blade:
1. Pull out the power plug of the machine.
2. Put down the cable where you can see it.
3. Turn over the disconnected machine and put it
on a flat surface.
4. Using the open-end wrench (C) provided,
loosen the screws (8) on the side cover.
5. Swing the cover away to the side.

6. Using the open-end wrench (C), unscrew all
hexagon head screws (9) by approx. 1 - 2
turns to loosen the blade unit.

7. Pull the blade unit from the side out of the
planing shaft.

8. Clean all parts and the blade chamber in the
planing shaft.

9. Change or turn the blades (11).
Always turn ore replace both blades.
10. Ensure that the blades (11) are placed on the
pins in the clamping jaw first, followed by the
blade carriers (12).

11. Reinsert the blade unit from the side into the
planing shaft.
12. Ensure that blade carrier and blades do not
protrude at the sides from the shaft body.

13. Using the open-end wrench (C) provided,
tighten the hexagon head screws (9) from the
center outward.

14. Swing back the cover and tighten the screws
(8) with the open-end wrench provided (C).
The planing blade has been changed /
turned.

The planing shaft is preset at the factory!
Adjustment of the inserted blades is therefore not necessary and is not allowed, as
otherwise the admissible projection of the blades over the shaft base body could be
exceeded.

5 Operation
5.1 Startup
These operating instructions must be brought to the attention of all persons entrusted with the operation of the
machine, with particular emphasis on the chapter "Safety instructions".
5.2 Switching on
Prior to switching on the machine, ensure that the planing shaft does not rest on the
support or the workpiece.
Prior to switching on the machine, hold it with both hands at the handles provided.
Use the following procedure to switch on the
machine:
1. Press the locking lever (3) forward to unlock
the switch-on lock.
2. With the locking lever (3) pressed, actuate and
hold the operating lever (4).
3. Release the locking lever (3).

Since the switch is not latching, the machine runs only as long as the operating lever is
pressed.
5.3 Switching off
Use the following procedure to switch off the
machine:
1. Release the operating lever (4).
The integrated automatic brake limits the
coasting time of the planing shaft to
approx. 1-3 seconds.
The switch-on lock is activated
automatically and secures the machine
against being switched on inadvertently.
The machine is switched off.

5.4 Chip depth adjustment
The cutting depth can be set continuously in a range between 0 and 3 mm [0 to 0.12 in].
Use the following procedure to adjust the chip
removal:
1. Turn the adjusting handle (1) for the chip
removal.
The planing depth is indicated on the
scale (6).

In normal operation, limit the setting to a maximum chip removal of up to 2 mm [0.08 in].
To avoid overloading the motor, the maximum chip removal should only be used in
extreme cases.

5.5 Working information
Prior to switching on the machine, position its base plate on the workpiece such that there is no contact yet
between the planing shaft and the workpiece.
Once the machine has reached its full rotational speed, hold the machine with both hands on the handles (2)
and guide it steadily over the workpiece. A steady feed results in a clean planing surface and is gentle on the
machine.
When working with full planing width, the guide roller (6) can serve as a lateral guide fence.
Use the following procedure for a lateral
guidance:
1. Release the knurled knob (5).
2. Swing down the guide roll (6).
3. Tighten the knurled knob (5).
4. Move the machine with the guide roll (6)
laterally against the workpiece and guide it
along the workpiece.

Do not remove the machine from the workpiece with the planing shaft running.
The rotational speed of the planing shaft drops in case of overload.
Switch the machine off and back on. Wait until the planing shaft has reached its full
rotational speed again. Continue working then at a reduced feed rate.
At a chip removal 0, the switched-off machine can be put down on a flat surface without
damaging the support.

6 Service and maintenance
MAFELL machines are of a low-maintenance design.
The installed ball bearings are lubricated for life. After a longer period of operation, MAFELL recommends that
the machine be handed over to an authorized MAFELL service workshop for inspection.
6.1 Tool
The resin on the blade unit used in the machine (clamping jaws, blade carrier and blades) should be removed
at regular intervals. Clean tools improve the planing quality.
To remove the resin, soak the blade unit for 24 hours in kerosene or a commercially available resin-removing
agent.
To remove resin from aluminum tools, use only solvents that do not attack aluminum.
6.2 Storage
Clean the machine thoroughly if you will not use it for quite some time. Spray bare metal parts with a rust
inhibitor.

7 Troubleshooting
Warning
Risk of injury from a sudden start of the machine.
There is a risk that the machine starts suddenly due to carelessness when
working with the machine or during troubleshooting. The rotating planing shaft
can cause serious injuries.
Determining the causes of existing malfunctions and their elimination
always require increased attention and caution!
Pull out the mains plug before you start troubleshooting!
