I. INNOVATOR INTRODUCTION
his manual provides operating and basic maintenance instructions for the Ricon Innovator
Wheelchair Lift. The platform on the Innovator is raised and lowered by a single arm. The
single-arm design keeps the vehicle doorway clear, which maximizes available space inside the
vehicle and allows the front passenger seat to fully recline. The front rollstop and side barriers
on the platform automatically lower when the platform contacts the ground. The lowered side
barriers allow entry onto the platform from a wide angle. Operation of the Innovator lift is done
by either a trained attendant or the wheelchair occupant.
Force to raise the platform is provided by a self-contained electro-hydraulic pump, which has a
lifting capacity of 660 pounds (300 kilograms). The pump assembly houses a built-in manual
backup pump that is used to raise the platform if the lift loses power.
The platform is unfolded from the vehicle (deployed) by pressing a switch on the control pen-
dant. A second switch is then pressed to lower the platform to the ground. An auxiliary switch
located on the platform handrail can be used to raise or lower the platform independently of the
control pendant
When the wheelchair lift is no longer needed, the platform is raised and folded into the vehicle
(stowed). If necessary, the platform can be stowed in a partially folded position, allowing a wide
object to be placed inside the vehicle.
The operating instructions must be read thoroughly to promote passenger and operator safety. It
is important to follow the Ricon recommendations for cleaning, inspecting, and lubricating the
wheelchair lift.

II. INNOVATOR LIFT OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
his chapter contains safety precautions, daily safety check instructions, control and indicator
descriptions, and operating instructions for the RICON Innovator Wheelchair Lift. This chap-
ter must be thoroughly understood by the lift operator.
A. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The following safety precautions must be complied with at all times when operating lift:
¡ Refer to Figure 2-1. Deploying lift when vehicle is on sloped ground is hazardous. Op-
erate lift with vehicle parked on level ground.
¡ Vehicle must be safely parked with parking brake ON before using lift.
¡ Inspect lift before use. DO NOT use lift if any unsafe condition exists, or unusual noises
or movements are noticed. Contact an authorized Ricon dealer for repair.
¡ Read and comply with all warning labels and symbols affixed to wheelchair lift.
¡ Wheelchair occupant must FACE OUTWARD when entering or exiting vehicle.
¡ DO NOT back onto platform when exiting vehicle. FACE OUTWARD and be certain that
platform is at floor level. Check that outer rollstop is up and locked.
¡ Do not place objects inside vehicle that may prevent you from rotating your wheelchair to
safely exit vehicle facing outward.
¡ The front rollstop, when closed, is designed to prevent a wheelchair from slowly, inad-
vertently rolling off of platform. Hitting the front rollstop with the small front wheels of a
fast-moving wheelchair can tip the wheelchair (causing possible injury to wheelchair oc-
cupant). Do not expect rollstop to stop a fast-moving wheelchair, as it is not designed
for that purpose. Use care, board platform slowly, and lock wheelchair brakes.
¡ Be certain wheelchair fits safely on platform; it must not extend beyond edges or inter-
fere with operation of rollstop.
¡ Do not operate with a load in excess of 660 lbs (300 kg).
¡ Keep arms, legs, and clothing away from moving lift parts.
¡ The lift is intended for ONE wheelchair and its occupant. Do not overload lift.
¡ Keep others clear while operating lift.
¡ Do not allow an untrained person to operate lift.
¡ Careful supervision is necessary if used by or near children.
¡ Do not allow anyone to stand on bridgeplate. A bent bridgeplate can interfere with the
platform as it rises and lowers.
T
FIGURE 2

2 - 2
¡ LOCK WHEELCHAIR BRAKES before moving platform (power wheelchair users should
turn off power and set brake).
¡ Use great care in wet conditions, because the wheelchair brakes are less effective if
wheels or platform are wet.
¡ Never leave platform outside of vehicle. Return platform to stowed position after use.
¡ Do not use a wheelchair on this lift that is too large for the vehicle. The wheelchair must
be able to rotate freely inside vehicle so that you can safely exit vehicle facing outward.
Read and understand these safety precautions. Review them periodically and ask any atten-
dants or other operators to read them as well. Contact an authorized Ricon dealer or call Ri-
con Product Support if you have questions.
B. DAILY SAFETY CHECK
Inspect lift before use and meet the following conditions:
¡ All functions operate properly. DO NOT use lift if unusual noises or movements exist.
Contact an authorized Ricon dealer for repair.
¡ Vehicle interlock is operating properly.
¡ Objects that may interfere with operation are not present.
¡ General appearance and lubrication are satisfactory and all fasteners are tight.

THE LIFT CAN OPERATE ONLY WHEN PERMITTED TO BY THE VEHICLE INTERLOCK
CIRCUITRY. DO NOT OPERATE LIFT WITH INTERLOCK BYPASSED. REFER TO VEHICLE
OPERATOR MANUAL FOR INTERLOCK INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE OPERATING LIFT.
¡ Control Pendant
Refer to Figure 2-3. The lift is operated with two rocker switches, which are located on a
hand-held, hard-wired control pendant. Each lift function is controlled by pushing one end of
a switch. The ends of the switches are referred to here as buttons. Pushing the DEPLOY but-
ton unfolds platform from vehicle, and pushing the STOW button folds platform into vehicle.
Pushing the DOWN button lowers the deployed platform, and pushing the UP button raises the
deployed platform. A button must be held depressed until the lift has completed the function.
The button can be released at any time to halt platform movement. The pendant is stowed on
a wall-clip inside vehicle.
¡ Handrail Control Switch
Refer to Figure 2-4. The deployed platform can also be raised or lowered with a toggle
switch on the handrail. Pushing the switch forward lowers the platform and pulling the switch
back raises the platform. Push and hold the switch until the platform has completed the op-
eration. Release the switch to halt motion of the platform.

¡ Wrap Disable Switch
Refer to Figure 2-5. The wrap disable switch is at the lower rear of the lift tower. Press the
top of the switch to disable the final wrapping motion of the platform stow function. Disabling
the final wrapping motion results in more interior space within the vehicle to accommodate
large wheelchairs or large cargo. When the wrap disable feature is on and the STOW button is
pushed, the platform will fold to the upright position and stop. Refer to Figures 1-3 and 1-4
for stow positions with the platform wrapped and unwrapped.
¡ Interlock Indicator Light
Refer to Figure 2-5. The Interlock Indicator Light is at the lower rear of the lift tower. The
purpose of a vehicle interlock system is to prevent lift operation under unsafe conditions.
When a vehicle interlock systems is interfaced with lift circuitry, the interlock indicator light
shows whether or not the interlock is operating properly. The light is ON when the interlock
system makes electrical power available to lift, and OFF when the interlock has removed
power. If an interlock system is not installed, the light stays illuminated at all times.
CAUTION!
Do not hold a circuit breaker in its reset position if holding and releasing
does not restore power. Contact an authorized Ricon dealer for repair.
