cian.We’vetriedtomakethismanualaseasytoreadaspossibleandevenhelpfulatmes.
However,ifyoualreadyhaveenoughknowledgeaboutsubwoofersandyouknownottodo
thedumbthingswarnedaboutinthesafetypages,beourguestandstartenjoyingyour
Speedwoofer.
Sincewedon’tknowaboutyourparcularaudiosetup,whetherit’shometheaterorstereo,
we’vetriedtocoverallthebases.Sofeelfreetoskiparoundandonlyreadwhat’sofinterest

A Few Words of Introducon

Since1970,RSLSpeakers’greatestjoyhasbeenmanufacturingspeakersthatourcustomers
considertobetheverybestvalueinsound.Threeyearsago,wehatchedadiabolicalplanto
shakeupthesubwooferindustry.Wedecidedtoproduceanaordablesubwooferthatwould
shaerallnoonsabouthowmuchahighendsoundingsubwooferwouldreallyneedtocost.
WewantedtomaketheSpeedwoofer10Ssoaordablethatpeoplewouldshaketheirheads
indisbeliefeverymethey’dlistentoit,whenconsideringwhattheypaidforit.Also,itslow
pricewouldenablepeopletoenjoytheadvantagesthatmulplesubwooferswouldprovide.
Wespent3yearsofpainstakingresearchandhopeyouagreethatwe’veachievedourgoals
withthenewSpeedwoofer10S.
Whenitcomestobass,qualityisasimportantasquanty.It’seasytoproduceaninexpensive
subwooferthatproducesgobsoflowend.However,gengittodoitcleanlyisalotmore
dicultasmanyaordablesubwooferssoundsloppy.Theylocalize,whichmeanstheydraw
aenontothemselves.Thebasstheyproduceseemsseparatefromtherestofthesound.
Youcansensethatbassiscomingfromthelocaonofthesubwoofer.Withaproperlyde-
signedsubwoofer,bassshouldsoundasifitiscomingfromitsactuallocaon
inthesound
track.

PartoftheSpeedwoofer10S’saccuratebassresponseisduetoourexclusiveCompression
GuideTechnology.Quiteafewyearsago,wenocedthatalmostallspeakers(includingearly
RSLs)sueredfromaproblem.Itwasanawarenessthatthesoundofbassoverspeakerswas
quitedierent
frombassataliveperformance.Whenyou’dhearbasslive,youwouldhear
variousdetailsinthebassaswellasfeeltheimpact.

Forexample,withabassguitar,youcanfeelthepickofthestringalongwiththebassnote.
Withakickdrum,youcouldhearthewrapofthemalletagainsttheskinofthedrumandyour
bodycouldfeeltheimpact.However,withconvenonalspeakersallyou’dhearwasanill-
denedboom.Backthen,theonlyspeakersthatseemedtogetitrightwerethebig,bulkyand
expensivetransmission-linesystems.
Weneededtoknowwhytherewasadisparitybetweenlivebassandtha treproducedby
speakers.Aersomeresearch,itbecameapparentthattheproblemwasduetothewaythe
wooferwastunedintheenclosure.Aswasthecasethenjustasitisnow,2tuningmethods
wereusedbymostspeakercompanies.Inonecasethecabinetwascompletelysealed.This
methodiscalledacouscsuspensionorairsuspension.Intheothermethod,thecabinethad
acalculatedopeningcalledaventorport.Thelength,widthandheightoftheportwasde-
signedtoreinforcebassatthelowestfrequencies.
Theproblemwithbothofthesemethodsisthattheyrelyonsystemresonancetoproperly
loadthewoofer.Systemresonanceactslikeaspringinthatoncethenotestops,thewoofer
conewantstoconnuevibrang.Thisresultsinwhatwecallwooferoverhangandresultsin
muddybass.Aerrealizingtheproblem,wespentyearsaempngtolessentheeectsof
systemresonance.Eventually,wefoundthesoluonandtheresultswerespectacular.Wecall
itCompressionGuideanditwasamethodofdividingtheinsidesofthespeakerenclosureinto
areasofcompressionandexpansion.Asthesoundwavepassedthroughtheseareas,the
eectsofresonanceweregreatlyreduced.
WediscoveredthatCompressionGuidealsopaidhugedividendsinthemidrangeandtreble
aswell.BookshelfspeakerstunedbyCompressionGuideexhibitedmuchcleanerandtrans-
parentsoundwithbothvocalsandmusic.Incomparison,otherbookshelfspeakerssounded
“boxy”.Italsohelpedthespeakerstoimagemoreaccurately.

inexcessof800was.
 DenseMDFwoodencabinetwithinternalbracing.Unlikemostsubwoofers,theSpeed-
woofer10S’senclosureiscompletelylledwithdampingmaterialtofurtherreduceun-
wantedresonances.
 Wirelesscapability.TheSpeedwoofer10Shasawirelessreceiverbuiltin.Ifyouareunable
torunanaudiocabletothesubwoofer,youcanpurchaseouroponalwirelesstransmier
andgetfullperformancewirelessly.
First Steps
 Becarefulwhenusingsharpobjectstoopenbox-
es.Theinseronofalongand/orsharpobject
suchasabladecandamagethecomponentsin-
side.Useofchainsaws,machetes,powertools,
explosives,lightsabers,andmostkitchenwareis
notrecommended.Ifindoubt,askmommyto
helpyou.
 Pleasetakeamomenttoinspectyoursubwoofer
fordamage.Ifyoundanydamagethatyoudid
notspecicallyrequest,pleasecontactusorthe
shippingcompanyimmediately.Allcomponents
havebeeninspectedwhenleavingourfactory;
howeverdamagecanoccurduringshipping.
 Ifpossible,werecommendsavingallpackaging,includingboxes,asaconvenientmeansof
re-packagingformovingorforsendingyoursubwooferinforservice(intheunlikely event
theyneedit).
 YouwillneedeitheranRCAcableortheoponalwirelesstransmiertoconnectthesub-
woofer.IfyoupurchaseanRCAcable,youdonotneedtobuyanexpensiveone.Subwoof-
ersreproduceanarrowbandoffrequencies,typically20-200Hz.Donotallowsomeslick,
fast-talking,know-it-allsalespersontoconvinceyoutospendalotonthiscable.Justpur-
chaseacablethatisconstructedwellenoughtolast.

4. Cleaning – Unplug this product from the wall
outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid clean-
ers or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp, soft cloth
for cleaning.
5. Water and Moisture – Do not use this prod-
uct near water. For example, near a bath tub,
wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub; in a

7. Ventilation – Slots and openings into the cab-
inet are provided for ventilation and to ensure
reliable operation of the product and to protect
it from overheating, and these openings must
not be blocked or covered. The openings
should never be blocked by placing the prod-
uct on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar sur-
face. This product should not be placed in a
built-in installation such as a bookcase or rack
unless proper ventilation is provided or the
manufacturer’s instructions have been ad-

8. Power Sources – This product should be
operated only from the type of power source
indicated on the marking label. If you are
not sure of the type of power supply to your
home, consult your product dealer or local
power company.
9. Grounding and Polarization – This prod-
uct may be equipped with a polarized alter-
nating-current line plug (a plug having one
blade wider than the other). This plug will fit
into the power outlet only one way. This is a
safety feature. If you are unable to insert the
plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the
plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact
your electrician to replace your obsolete
outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of
the polarized plug.
10. Power-Cord Protection – Power supply
cords should be routed so that they are not
likely to be walked on or pinched by items
placed upon or against them, paying partic-
ular attention to cords at plugs, convenience
receptacles, and the point where they exit
from the product.
11. Lightning – For added protection for this
product during a lightning storm, or when it
is left unattended and unused for long peri-
ods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet.

haspooracouscs,high-endspeakerscansoundlacking.Acouscalqualiesaredetermined
bythedimensionsofyourroomandtheamountofsound-absorbingmaterialspresent.
Becausethismanualcoverstheinstallaonofyournewsubwoofer,wewillconcernourselves
withhowyourroom’sacouscsaectbass.Bassdistribuonisstrictlydeterminedbya
room’sdimensions.Aroomwithevenlydistributedbasswilldeliverthesamevolumeofbass
indierentseangposions.Obviously,youcan’tdoaheckofalotaboutthedimensionsof
yourroom.Don’tworry;fewroomsareclosetoperfect.Youcanhowevermaximizetheeven-
nessofbassdistribuonbyproperlyposioningyoursubwoofer(ifyouhavethatexibility)
andinmoreextremecasesusingmulplesubwoofers.
Andnotethatwhilevirtuallyalloftoday’sAudio/Videoreceiversandprocessorsincludemi-
crophonesandroomcorreconcircuitrythatcanhelptosmoothbassfre quency response,
theywillnotcorrectforbassdistribuonproblems.

Thegoalinplacingyoursubwooferistogetevenbassdistribuoninvariouslisteningposi-
ons.Preymuchanythinggoesasfaraswheretoplaceit.We’veincludedafewdrawingsto
indicaterelaveposioning.Weknowthat,becausethesedrawingshavesuchnedetail,you
maythinkwehidinpeople’shomestophotographtheirroomswhentheyweren’tlooking.

Insomesituaons,youmayberestrictedtoonlyonelocaonforyoursubwoofer.Ifyoudo,
thenskipthisseconandgototheseconthatdescribeshowtoadjustyoursubwoofer.If
youhavetheexibilityofmovingthesubwooferaround,thenyoushouldexperimentunl
youndthebestlocaonwherethesubwooferdistributesbassevenly.Thismeansthatin
variousseangposions,youshouldbeable tohearthesamevolumeofbass.
Hereareacoupleofmethodstondtherightplaceforyoursubwoofer.Beforeyoustart,
notethatyou’llneedanRCAcablelongenoughtoextendfromyourreceiveroramplierto
thelocaonyouwhichtotry.Otherwise,youcanpurchaseanoponalRSLwirelesstrans-
mier,whicheliminatestheneedfortheRCAcable.Regardless,youwillneedtobeableto
reachanACoutlettopowerthesubwoofer(heavy-dutyextensioncordsareOK).
WerecommendplayingaCDwithasongthathasapreyconsistentbasstrackthroughout.
Then,experimentwithplacingthesubwooferindierentposionsinyourroom.Placement
nearawallwillincreaseyoursubwoofer’sbassoutput.Placementnear,orinacornerwillin-
creaseitevenfurther.Whenyoudecidethebestlocaonforyoursubwoofer,itshouldbe
basednotonlyonthemostevenbassdistribuon,butthebestqualityofbassaswell.We’ll
delveintothatalilemoreonthenextpage.

Ifyourfamilyandpetsgiveyoupermissiontoplaceyoursubwooferanywhereyouwish,your
goalshouldnotonlybebestbassdistribuon,butthequalityofbassaswell.Byqualitywe
meanthemostnaturalsoundingbass.Eachbassinstrumentshouldbedisncveandnot
boomyorsloppy.Don’tplaceyoursubwooferrightagainstthewall.Itneedsafewinchesof
airowinordertoprovidecoolingfortheamplier.Andwhilewe’reatit,pleasedon’tplace
blankets,tablecloths,footballjerseysoranymaterialsthatcouldcoverthebackofthesub-
wooferandinhibitairowtotheamplier.
Here’sonemethodyoucanusetoplaceyoursubwoofer.Connectyoursubwooferandtempo-
rarilyplaceitinyourlisteningposion(onthesofa,etc).Then,whileplayingsomemusicwith
aconstantbasstrack,crawlaroundtheperimeterofyourroomandndthespotwherethe
bassseemstohavethebestquality(don’tletanybodyseeyou,otherwiseyou’llhavesome
explainingtodo).Then,placethesubwooferinthespotwhereyouheardthebestbass.You
canrepeatthisfordierentlisteningposionsandseeifyoucanndthebest subwoofer
posi-
onthataccommodatesthemostlisteningposions.
Dual Subwoofers
Manyaudioexpertsrecommenddualsubwoofers.Theyfeelthatwithdualsubsit’smucheasi-
ertogetconsistentbassdistribuonbyplacingthe2subsindierentposions.Dualsubsde-
livermorepowerfulbassthroughouttheroomWiththatbeingsaid,oursubwoofersare
quitepowerfulandthemajorityofourcustomersarequitehappywiththeperformanceofa
singleRSLsubwoofer.
Dualsubscanalsohelpyouachievefoundaon-crackinglevelsofbass(ifyou’resoinclined).
Dualsubwoofersplacedindierentlocaonscanachievea3dbormoregaininbassoutput.
Whilethatmaynotseemlikealot,foranampliertodeliver3dbmorevolume,itspowerhas
todouble!Ifyouplacedualsubwoofersrightnexttoeachother,you’llgetapproximatelya

Theboomlineisthattherearesomanyvariaonsinrooms’shapesandsizesthatthereisno
oneruleforsubwooferplacement.Wesuggestyoutryasmanydierentposionsaspossible.

WehavedesignedtheSpeedwoofer10Stoaccommodateavarietyofinstallaonsincluding
hometheateraswellasstereosystems.ThemostcommoninstallaonwithbewithanA/V
receiverorprocessor.Inthiscase,allyou’llneedisasingleRCAcableandawalloutlet.The
RCAcabledoesnothavetobeexpensiveasthesubwooferonlyreproducesanarrowbandof
frequencies.Howeverchooseacablethatisconstructedtolast.
ConnectoneendoftheRCAcabletoyourreceiverorprocessor’ssubwoofer(orLFE)output.
ConnecttheotherendtotheSpeedwoofer’sLFEinput.Then,set the Speedwoofer’s Internal
Crossover Bypass to Bypass.Youwillnotbeusi ngtheSpeedwoof er’sinternal crossover,be-
causethatfunconisperformedinyourA/Vreceiverorprocessor.

Method #1 Connecon Though The Speedwoofer 10S
Thismethod,requires2pairsofRCAcables.Onepairofcablesisconnectedfromyourpream-
plier(orreceiver’spre-amplier)outputstotheSpeedwoofer’sleandrightlineinputs.
Thenanotherpairisconnectedfromthesub’sleandrightlineoutputstoyourpowerampli-
er(orbackintoyourreceiver’spoweramplierinputs).Theaudiosignaltravelsfromyour
pre-amplierthroughthesubwoofergivingthesubwoofertheaudioitneedsandthenback
outtoyourpoweramplierandtoyourspeakers.Inthismethod,theSpeedwoofer’sinternal
crossoverisusedtocontrolthebassofthesubwoofer.SettheInternalCrossoverBypassto
InternalCrossoverandadjustthecrossoverfrequency.Youcanalsousethemethodbelow:

Method #3 Connecon Using Speaker Wires
Ifyourequipmentcan’taccommodatethersttwomethods,youcansllconnectyourSpeed-
woofer.Thisthirdmethodwillworkjustneandisverysimple.Youwillneedanaddional
pairoftwo-conductorspeakerwires.Inaddiontoyourmainspeakerconnecons,you’llrun
asecondsetofwirestoyoursubwoofer(seediagramabove).Asintheabovemethods,the
Speedwoofer’sinternalcrossoverisusedtocontrolthebassreproduconofthesubwoofer.
BesuretosettheInternalCrossoverBypasstoInternalCrossoverandadjustthecrossoverfre-
quency.

nal.So,youcanrunseparateRCAcablestoeachofyoursubwooferusingthese2connecons.
ThesecondwayisifyourA/VreceiveronlyhasonesubwooferorLFEconnecon.Inthiscase,
youcanconnectaYadaptertothereceiver’soutputandconnecttwoRCAcables(onefor

stereo),you’llneedtousetheSpeedwoofer'scrossoverbyippingtheswitchto"internal

Speaker Level In-Thisconneconcanbeusedinstereosystemswithampliersthatdonot
havepre-amplieroutputs.Connectonesetofspeakerwiresfromyourreceivertoyour

connectedtheSpeedwooferusinganyoftheothermethods.
Input Voltage-IsNormallysetforuseintheU.S.andCanadaat115Volts. If your country's AC
voltage is 230240 Volts, you must change this seng before using the Speedwoofer. You
must also change the fuse to a 2.5 amp fuse. See the back of the subwoofer. Unfortunately,
failure to do this will void your warranty.
Main Power Switch-Thiswillnormallybeleon.Whenswitchedon,yourSpeedwooferwill
gointostandbymode(redlight)unlitreceivesanaudiosignal.Standbymodeconsumesvery
lilepower(around1wa).WhentheSpeedwooferreceivesanaudiosignal,thelightwill
turnfromredtoblue.WhentheSpeedwooferstopsreceivinganaudiosignal,itwillreturnto
standbymodeaerapproximately20minutes.
WhenconnecnganddisconnecngcablestotheSpeedwoofer,makesurethemainpower
switchiso.
AC Receptacle-ReceivesthepowercordandACpower.Thisiswherethefuseisstored.You
mayuseanextensioncord,butwerecommendonewithheavygaugewire.

No Sound from Your subwoofer. Power indicator not lit.
1.Checktoconrmthatyoursubwooferissettothe“on”or“standby”posion.
2.Inspectthepowercord.Makesureitissecurelypluggedintothewalloutletandsubwoofer
andthatithasnotbeendamaged.
3.Besurethewalloutletisacve.
4.YourRSLSpeedwoofer10S’sampliercontainsaremovablefusedesignedtoprotectitfrom
overheang,shortcircuits,andotherpotenallydamagingoccurrences.Thisfuseshouldbe
checkedandislocatedinthepowercordsocketontheamplier.
Make sure the Speedwoofer is unplugged from the AC when accessing the fuse.
Youwillneedtoinsertaat-headscrewdriver(orappropriateobject)inthehorizontal
slotlocatedonthepowercordsocket,justbelowwherethecordplugsin.Thisisthe
piecethatcontainsthefuse.
Gentlyprythefusehousingopenunlitdetaches.Extractthehousingfromthepower
cordsocket,removethefuseandinspectit.Ifthewireinsidethecylinderisseveredor
displaysagap;thefuseisbadandneedstobereplaced.Replacewithexactlythesame
value
fuse.Thevalueisindicatedbelowthepowersocket.
Ifthenewfuseblows,yoursubwooferrequiresservice.
