Chapter 1 – General Information
The Series 4000 Recording Ammeter (4X08-78B) measures variables such as
AC line current or AC line voltage on an 8-inch diameter circular paper chart
using a fiber-tip pen. Enclosed in a polyester case with shatterproof glass front
(sealed with room-temperature vulcanizing silicon), the ammeter can be either
flush or surface mounted.
1.1 Product Description
Series 4000 Recorders (4X08-87B) measure variables for AC line current on a
circular paper chart.
General Features
Figure 1-1 shows a typical recording ammeter.

This instrument has the following general features:
Chart Size: Recording ammeters use 20.32 cm (8-inch) diameter circular
charts.
Cases: Recording ammeters are offered in universal (flush or surface)
mounted cases. The cases are coated with a polyester gray finish (standard)
and are intended for general purpose applications.
Internal Termination: Recording ammeters use internal termination.
Field wiring posts are located inside the case above or below the chart
plate.
Back or Bottom Connections: Recording ammeters contain a reversible
connection plate that can be positioned to bring in wiring or conduit
through the back or bottom of the case.
Pens: Recording ammeters use one-pen with a disposable fibertip.
Chart Drives: Spring-wound, AC electric, or battery chart drives are
offered.
Positive Lock Chart Hub: An easy-set chart hub clip provides positive
center locking of the circular chart.
Large Viewing Area: A large window provides full chart visibility with
the door closed.
Calibration: Recorders are provided with zero and span adjustments for
field calibration.

Measurement Features
Recording ammeters have one or more of following measurement features:
AC Current Range: Measures alternating current, provided in standard
range of 0-5 amperes at 50-60 Hz.
Optional Test Terminals: Some models provide test terminals to simplify
calibration and service procedures.
Pen Lock: The measuring element includes a locking mechanism that you
can be set to secure the meter movement and pen system for shipment.
Pen Damping: Magnetic damping minimizes rapid pen fluctuation caused
by measured variables having a noise or oscillation component.
1.2 Theory of Operation
Recording ammeters employ a meter assembly that positions the pen on the
chart. See Figure 1-2.

The meter assembly contains a coil, a fixed-iron pole piece, and a movable-
iron pole piece that pivots freely on a shaft. When no AC is present at the input
terminals, a return spring keeps the two pole pieces together. When an AC
input is applied to the coil circuit, the coil generates a magnetic field that
causes the moving pole piece to move away from fixed pole piece. Since the
moving pole piece is attached to the shaft of the pen arm, it will cause the pen
to record the amount of movement or input change on the chart of the recorder.
Attached to the rear of the output shaft is a metal vane that pivots between the
gap of a circular magnet. In a static condition, the magnetic fields concentrated
at the gap have no effect on the vane. When a movement of the output shaft
occurs due to a change of input level, the magnetic field at the gap generates
eddy currents within the vane. These eddy currents, in turn generate counter
fields that oppose the fixed field of the circular magnet. These counter fields
partially inhibit motion of the vane and result in a slower but more uniform
pen tracking. A counterweight assembly attached to the pen arm shaft
functions as a counter balance to minimize mechanical drag.
1.3 Model Identification
A data plate affixed to the recorder provides the model and serial numbers, and
the measurement range of each pen. Other pertinent data may also be included.
Always refer to this plate when requesting support.
The model number listed on the data plate identifies the features of the
instrument:

Chapter 2 – Installation
This chapter discusses the installation procedures for the Series 4000
Recording Ammeter.
2.1 Unpacking the Instrument
Carefully remove all protective cushioning material, cardboard guards,
and shipping tape. Check the accessory mounting kit (if included) for
completeness.
The ammeter ships with its pen secured in a fixed position. Remove any
tape, elastics or packing material as required. Do not apply excessive
force to mechanisms while unpacking as calibration errors or damage
may result.
2.2 Selecting a Location
Series 4000 instruments are intended for general-purpose indoor
installations. When choosing a site for the instrument, select one that is
convenient to both the process and operator. Avoid areas with high levels
of dust or corrosive fumes. Avoid installation sites subject to severe
vibration or mechanical shock.
Make sure the instrument operates within its stated temperature and
humidity range (see Chapter 6, Specifications). If ambient conditions
exceed the stated temperature and humidity, errors and poor performance
may result. Prolonged operation under extreme ambient conditions may
also cause instrument failure.
Warning
Do not install or operate these instruments in environments
containing combustible air-borne particles or flammable gases.
These instruments contain electrical devices, which could (under
certain conditions) generate sparks and result in flash fire or
explosion.
2.3 Installing the Instrument
Before installing the instrument, make sure that the area provides good
illumination for the operator. Allow sufficient clearance for the door to
swing open and for any back or bottom connections to enter the
instrument.
Install the instrument so that it is level on both its horizontal and depth
axis. This ensures that the instrument provides its maximum
performance.
Figure 2-1 shows the overall mounting dimensions for various types of
instruments.

2.3.1 Surface Mounting
For this type of installation, fasten the instrument to a wall or flat surface
using the three reversible universal mounting brackets contained in the
accessory kit. Mount the brackets at the rear of the recorder as shown in
Figure 2-2. Drill starting holes for each bracket at the required distances.
Insert lag bolts or screws through the bracket holes and tighten each until
the case is already secured.

2.3.2 Flush Mounting
For this installation, mount the instrument in a panel cutout as shown in
Figure 2-3. Use the reversible universal mounting brackets and tension
bolts shown in the illustration and tighten each bolt until the instrument
is rigid and self-supporting. Secure the bolt locking nuts to maintain the
setting.

2.4 Electrical Connections
The Series 4000 Recording Ammeter is furnished with a Customer
Connection Plate (CCP), shown in Figure 2-4.

The CCP has four 7/8” holes. CCPs are factory-furnished with either
protective plugs or electrical binding posts. All four openings associated
with CCPs that are provided with binding posts for external connections
(of any sort) are machined with 1/2” D-holes.

Chapter 3 – Field Wiring
This chapter discusses field wiring for the Series 4000 Recording
Ammeter.
3.1 Electrical Termination
Recording ammeters use internal electrical terminal connections. Models
with internal connections have the wiring terminals located inside the
case on the ammeter assembly and on the chart drive.
3.1.1 Customer Connection Plate (CCP)
All models are furnished with a CCP (see Figure 2-3 in Chapter 2). The
CCP has four 7/8” holes. CCPs are factory-furnished with either
protective plugs or electrical binding posts.
3.1.2 AC Wiring Notes
Instruments are factory-configured with the customer-specified current
range.
Make sure that voltage listed on the instrument data plate conforms with
the local power source before making any connections. Using the wrong
supply voltage can result to improper operation or instrument burnout.
Warning
Do not attempt to connect live wires to the input terminals. The
instrument AC power source must be turned off to prevent
electrical shock.
Recorders are furnished with a green grounding screw inside the case
(typically found below the chart plate on the base). It is essential that this
screw connects to an approved earth ground to provide maximum safety
for users.
Warning
Electrically powered instruments must be properly grounded to
protect users from electrical shock and possible fatal injury.
Grounding should be performed in accordance with the National
Electrical Code, ANSI/ISA standard S82.01, S82.02 and S82.03
and local regulations.
If the instrument is wired for an AC power outlet, a three-pronged plug is
required. The wire coming from the green-coded prong of the plug must
connect to the green grounding screw of the instrument.
If AC wiring is brought in through a metal power conduit, then a separate
wire from the ground point must connect to the green grounding screw of
the instrument.

3.2 Connections for Recording Ammeters
This section discusses electrical connections for recording
ammeters.
3.2.1 Single Range Ammeter
Figure 3-1 shows the internal schematic of a single-range
ammeter.

This instrument contains a single meter coil that provides a 0-5 A
range. Make input connections by opening one leg of the AC line
and wiring both ends across the CURRENT terminals located on
the terminal plate. These connections effectively place the meter
coil in series with the external load.
3.2.2 Internal and External Connections
Some models with AC electric chart drives have the 120 V AC
power source connected directly to terminals on the drive unit (L1
and L2), as shown in Figure 3-2. However, other models have the
AC power source connected to separate terminal blocks, shown in
Figure 3-3.

Chapter 4 – Operation
This section discusses the operation of the chart drive and inking
system, including procedures for unlocking the pen arm, installing
charts, operating chart drives, removing chart plates, setting time
indexes, and using pen cartridges. Maintenance procedures for
chart drives and inking systems are also included.
4.1 Unlocking the Pen Arm
Recording ammeters include a pen arm-locking device for each
pen. The lock protects the pen arm and meter movement/s during
shipment or storage. Figure 4-1 shows the operating components.
Note: Make sure that the locking knob is turned to its maximum
counter-clockwise rotation during operation. The locking
knob interferes with the movement of the pen arm if left
anywhere in between. Turn the locking knob to its
maximum clockwise rotation when preparing the
instrument for shipment or storage.

4.2 Installing the Chart
Install the circular paper chart (8 inch diameter) as follows:
1. Open the recorder door by lifting the latch upward.
2. Release the pen lifter rod (see Figure 4-1) from the upper guide
slot holder and move downward to raise the pens from the
chart. Slide the chart hub clip towards its rounded end and flip
it upwards to unlock it.
3. Slide the chart hub clip (see Figure 4-1) towards its rounded
end and flip it upwards to unlock it.
4. Lift the old chart (if present) from the bottom and remove it
from the hub.
5. Insert the new chart under the pen and over the hub. Position
the chart so that the upper edge is under the guide slot and the
left part is under the time index.
6. Rotate the chart by hand until the desired starting time on the
chart is indicated by the time index.
Note: The time index corresponds to the arc traced by the pen.
Flip the chart hub clip down and slide it horizontally to
lock the chart into position.
7. Lower the pen on the chart by returning the pen lifter to its rest
position above. The chart installation is complete.
