Not a Point & Shoot. Not an SLR... It’s a PEN.
actual size
OLYMPUS PEN
Since 1959
What will you create?
In 1959, Olympus designed a camera with the
photographic optics of an SLR and the size
and simplicity of a point-and-shoot—revolutionizing
the way we take pictures. After 50 years, the PEN
is back. And it’s mightier than ever. Introducing
the new Olympus PEN. It’s totally digital, and
offers unique and groundbreaking technology to
a whole new generation of camera users—users
that have active lifestyles both online and off.
They shoot pictures and videos, like to download,
upload and share their lives. And the new PEN
brings this generation the extraordinary abilities to
create even more than what was thought possible.
The PEN provides superior optics, interchangeable
lenses and multimedia capabilities—and combines
the creative freedom of a sophisticated digital SLR
with the simple controls and small size of a point-
and-shoot. The PEN brings new photographic
possibilities to everyone. What will you create?
THE PEN CONCEPT
People always want more from their digital camera.
More power. More creative capabilities. More versatility.
They want the amazing picture quality and abilities of a
DSLR, but not its larger size. At Olympus, our goal was
to develop an interchangeable lens camera as portable as
the original PEN and packed with innovative features.
And with the development of the Micro Four Thirds
System, we’ve created the world’s smallest 12.3-megapixel
interchangeable-lens camera.
REVOLUTIONARY SIZE
In DSLRs, the image is viewed directly through the lens,
reflected by a reflex mirror through a pentaprism, and
seen through the viewnder. This imaging structure
contributes to the DSLR’s larger size. To reduce body
size and create the PEN, the mirror was eliminated in the
Micro Four Thirds System and the lens-mount diameter
has been reduced by about 6 mm. Using this technology,
the PEN maintains the same image-sensor size as the
conventional Four Thirds System. The result? Much smaller,
slimmer cameras and more compact lenses, without
compromising image quality. Meet the new Olympus PEN.
THE NEW PEN
Start creating with the new E-P1. DSLR quality, compact
portability and multimedia capabilities make it easy to
capture it all. With a 12.3-megapixel high-speed Live MOS
Sensor,
new TruePic
V image-processing engine, Dust
Reduction System and In-body Image Stabilization, the E-P1
delivers DSLR picture quality and performance. And thanks
to Micro Four Thirds technology, you even have the ability
to change lenses. The E-P1 comes packed with unique
features including six Art Filters, HD Movie mode, Linear
PCM audio, in-camera slide show and Multi Aspect Ratio
shooting—providing endless creative capabilities. So
what will you create?
B R I N G S T Y L E T O Y O U R P H O T O S W I T H A R T F I LT E R S
The E-P1 gives you the option to apply Art Filter effects
to pictures and movies. Each filter creates a unique look
and style.
Pop Art super-saturates colors and creates brighter,
more vivid photographs.
Soft Focus creates a dreamlike quality, giving
photographs a fantasy feel.
Pale & Light Color brings soft, flat light and pastel
coloring to your photos to create a feeling of romance.
Light Tone brightens your entire image, including
its darker areas, providing more detail and light.
Grainy Film creates more dramatic shots. It
produces a gritty black-and-white film quality,
giving your photographs an edgier look.
Pin Hole darkens the outer edges of your
photograph, enhancing the subject in the center.
This creates the feeling of a new atmosphere and
brings the photograph to life.
When shooting with an Art Filter, the E-P1 captures your
images in both RAW and JPEG format. The original image
is saved as a RAW file and the Art Filter image as a JPEG,
preserving both the Art Filter image and the original shot.
CREATE A
MULTIPLE EXPOSURE
Take your photography farther.
Capture your favorite shots
and overlay up to two images
to create a multiple exposure
image. You can compose and shoot your next frame while
your base shot is on the LCD. This way, you see what your
final result will look like even before you take the shot.
MULTI-ASPECT RATIOS
When shooting with the E-P1, choose from four aspect ratios
for more artistic freedom. Shoot in 4:3, perfect for an 8 x 10,
or 16:9, perfect for viewing on your widescreen television.
The E-P1 can also shoot in 6:6 and 3:2.
3" LIVE VIEW HYPERCRYSTAL
LCD
Capturing and viewing photos is easy with the 3" Hypercrystal
LCD screen. Settings like white balance and exposure can be
adjusted and seen instantly.
LIVE CONTROL
The Live Control function displays icons on the LCD
screen that correspond to all of the camera’s functions.
You can select and operate the controls without entering
into any menus. Any changes you make are applied to the
image in real time, allowing you to compose, edit and shoot
pictures without stopping. With the E-P1, you have the option
of shooting in Live Control or with the Super Control Panel.
C R E AT E H D M O V I E S
With the E-P1 you can shoot HD-quality movies. Record in
standard 4:3 (640 x 480, 30 fps) or the widescreen-compatible
16:9 (1280 x 720, 30 fps) aspect ratio. The image sensor in the
E-P1 is much larger than in an HD video camera, and offers
higher image quality for your movies. And because the
E-P1 has SLR capabilities, it provides other unique features
you can’t get from an ordinary video camera. You can use
different lenses—even shoot your movie with a 17mm. The
E-P1 also has in-body Electrical Image Stabilization, so your
movies will be crystal clear with any lens. You even have the
ability to apply photographic effects, including Art Filters, to
all your movies.
1
In addition, the still-image-save function
makes it possible to save the last frame in the movie as a still
image. You can even connect the E-P1 to an HDMI-equipped
TV set with the optional HDMI mini-cable and view your
HD movies and images with stereo audio.
RECORD IN HIGH-QUALITY STEREO PCM AUDIO
The linear PCM system’s non-compressed digital recording
delivers superior audio quality. You can easily add audio
files to a still image after you shoot.
CREATE SLIDE SHOWS WITH SOUND
Turn your still images and movies into a slide show with
music or dub in voices. The E-P1 has five background-music
options as well as slide show control functions, fade-in/out
of still images, audio dubbing, background music and audio
volume adjustment.
MF ASSIST FUNCTION AND
MAGNIFICATION DISPLAY
To enable accurate manual focusing,
the E-P1 provides MF Assist and
Magnification Display. In S-AF + MF or
MF, the MF Assist enables you to zoom
into the central part of the image by up
to 5 times by turning the focus ring. The
Magnification Display lets you magnify
the image on the LCD up to 7 times at
the touch of a button. And if you use the control dial, you
can boost magnification up to 10 times for more precise
manual focusing.

CREATIVITY
Defying conventional wisdom in terms of size, shape and
design, the E-P1 offers unique potential for creative expression.
Six Art Filters offer you artistic freedom, and Multi Aspect
Ratio shooting widens the boundaries of image expression
even more. Multimedia innovations such as HD Movie mode,
in-camera slide show and Linear PCM audio give you more
creative control. Now, you can capture photos and movies
all on one device and upload to Facebook, Flickr, YouTube
or Twitter. The 3" Live View LCD lets you shoot from unique
camera angles, and allows you to preview settings and
effects before you shoot. And thanks to the portability of the
Micro Four Thirds System, all these capabilities are right
at your fingertips, ensuring endless opportunities to capture
it all, exactly the way you envision it.
Video ConnectivityDigital Photo PCM Audio
The E-P1’s variety of multimedia capabilities lets you
create even more with a digital camera.
IMAGE QUALITY
While the Olympus PEN provides the enhanced mobility of
a point-and-shoot, it maintains the high image quality and
image sensor inherited from the E-System DSLRs. The E-P1
uses a 12.3-megapixel high-speed Live MOS Sensor
and
the newly developed TruePic
V image processing engine. It
also incorporates the same top-rated technologies found on
our E-System DSLR cameras including the Dust Reduction
System and In-body Image Stabilization. And of course,
the quality of all interchangeable ZUIKO DIGITAL
lenses.
M. ZUIKO DIGITAL
LENSES
Olympus has designed M. ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses exclusively
for the Micro Four Thirds System, which optimizes the mount
diameter and signal contacts according to the standard.
The digital-dedicated design of all Olympus digital lenses
delivers light to every corner of the image sensor and ensures
edge-to-edge sharpness for both still and moving images.
I M A G E S E N S O R A N D P R O C E S S I N G E N G I N E
The E-P1’s 12.3-megapixel high-speed Live MOS Sensor
and TruePic
V image-processing engine are the same
as used in all the Olympus E-System DSLRs to capture
high-resolution images, exquisite detail and accurate
color with low noise.
IN-BODY IMAGE STABILIZATION
In-Body Image Stabilization, built right into the camera body,
provides stabilization for every lens you shoot with. With
three modes of image stabilization, the E-P1 compensates
for camera shake by up to 4 EV steps
1
in any direction, and
with any lens. The image stabilization mechanism also
works when the optional mount adapter is used.
DUST REDUCTION SYSTEM
Olympus’ proven Dust Reduction System ensures crystal-
clear, spot-free photos. No more hours spent retouching
your pictures on a computer. Just turn on the E-P1 and the
exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter
vibrates and removes
any dust or foreign particles from in front of the image
sensor—ensuring spot-free photos and movies.
I M A G E R A F
The E-P1 incorporates an 11-point multi-area high-speed
imager AF mechanism, for accurate focusing. Just press
the shutter halfway. The E-P1 will focus in and you’ll
see the results instantly in Live View—even before you
take the shot.
METERING MODE
This mode divides the image area into an 18 x 18 grid,
metering each of the 324 separate cells to obtain optimum
exposure. In addition to 324-division ESP metering,
center-weighted metering and spot metering modes are
also available.
VARIOUS SHOOTING MODES
An easy shooting mode, applied shooting mode and
19 scene select modes are provided for great shots even in
difficult conditions. Manual control mode is also available
for more experienced users.
iAUTO FOR AUTOMATIC CAMERA SETTING
iAUTO is an automatic mode that determines and sets the
optimum scene mode. Set the dial to iAuto, point the E-P1
at your subject, and it automatically chooses from Portrait,
Landscape, Macro, Sports, Night Scene and Night Scene
& Portrait. The E-P1 will adjust the settings to get you the
perfect shot every time.
ePORTRAIT
The ePortrait scene mode adjusts skin tone, creating brighter,
smoother texture. With ePortrait set before shooting, the
camera saves the image before and after correction.
2
ISO 6400
High-sensitivity shooting at ISO 6400 allows brighter,
clearer shots in low light-situations, without a tripod.
FA C E D E T E C T I O N A N D
SHADOW ADJUSTMENT TECHNOLOGY (SAT)
Face Detection finds and focuses on faces to make sure
they’re clear. SAT adjusts the contrast in your photo,
making dark areas and shadows more visible.
I N - C A M E R A E D I T I N G
With the E-P1, you can edit your photos after you take them,
right in the camera, for on-the-go creativity. Art Filters and
the ePortrait feature can be applied to your shots in the
editing mode. And with PCM recording, you can dub in your
own audio to images and movies.
1
The correction effect varies depending on the lens type and shooting conditions.
2
The size of the corrected image is limited at 2560 x 1920. The correction effect may not
be obtained with certain subjects.
STYLISH DESIGN
Attention to detail is visible in every aspect of the E-P1’s
retro design. Its high-end stainless-steel body is easy
to handle and carry. And it’s available in two colors—
silver or white.
ACCESSORIES
Get more out of the E-P1 with exclusive accessories designed
to make it easy to take incredible pictures. Accessories
