EngineisOverheating
CAUTION
Thecoolingsystemmayover-
heatiftheenginecoolantisatthe
minimumlevel.Asuddenlossof
coolant,causedbyasplithose
orbrokenhoseclampcouldalso
leadtoanoverheatcondition.Al-
waysinspecttoensurehosesand
clampsarenotcracked,worn,or
loose.Failuretocomplymayresult
inequipmentorpropertydamage.
NOTE
Thesystemmayalsotemporarily
overheatduringsevereoperating
conditionssuchas:
Climbingahillonahotday.
Stoppingafterhigh-speed/
high-loaddriving.
Debrisblockingairow

coolant.Followthesesteps:
Reduceenginespeed,or
stop.Whenstopped,placethe

Checktoensurethattheoil
pressuregaugereadsnormal.
Increasetheenginespeedto
1,100to1,200RPMmaximumfor
twotothreeminutes.
Monitortheenginetemperature.
Afterthetemperaturereturns
tonormal,allowtheengineto
idlethreetoveminutesbefore
shuttingitoff.Thisallowsthe
enginetocoolgraduallyand
uniformly.
Iftheoverheatingcamefrom
severeoperatingconditions,the
temperatureshouldhavecooled
bythistime.
Besurethevehicleisparkedon
levelgroundorthereadingsmay
beincorrect.Checkthecoolant
levelatthecoolingmodulesurge
tank.

Toreducethechanceofper-
sonalinjuryand/orvehicledamage
causedbyengineoverheating,
neverleavetheengineidlingwhen
thevehicleisunattended.Iftheen-

idleshutdownfeature,available
onPACCARengines,canbepro-
grammedtoshuttheenginedown
afteraperiodoflowidleoperation
withnodriveractivity.Aashing
warninglampwillinformthedriver
ofanimpendingshutdown.Failure
tocomplymayresultinequipment
orpropertydamage.
CAUTION
Ifthetruckisequippedwithpower
takeoff(PTO)equipment,theen-
gineshutdownsystemcanbede-
activatedwhenthePTOisoper-
ational;however,engineidlepe-
riodsshouldnotexceedvemin-
uteswheneverpossible.Failureto
complymayresultinequipmentor
propertydamage.
