Your vehicle’s instrument panel is
equipped with this cluster or one very
similar to it. The instrument panel
cluster includes these key features:
A. Fuel Gauge
B. Engine Coolant Temperature
Gauge
C. Speedometer
D. Tachometer
IMPORTANT: The instrument panel
cluster is designed to let you know
of many important aspects of your
vehicle’s operation. It is important to
read your Owner Manual and
become familiar with the information
being relayed to you by the lights,
gauges and indicators, and what
action can be taken to ensure safety
and to prevent damage.

Climate Control System
Aim the side outlets toward the windows
and close the center outlets for maxi-
mum airflow to side windows.
See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.
Air Conditioning
For faster interior cooling on hot days:
1. Lower windows long enough for heat
to escape.
2. Select the recirculation mode.
3. Press the air conditioning button.
4. Turn the temperature control knob to
the coolest (blue) setting.
5. Turn the fan control knob to the
highest speed.
Defog/Defrost Modes
There are two modes to clear fog or
frost from the windshield and side win-
dows. Use the defog mode to clear
the windows and warm the passengers.
Use the defrost mode to clear fog or
frost from the windshield more quickly.
To defog the side windows most effi-
ciently, set the mode knob to the floor
setting and the fan knob to the highest
speed. Press the air conditioning button.
Audio System
MP3 Radio (if equipped)
Your MP3 stereo system allows you to
play traditional CDs as well as MP3
encoded discs that have been down-
loaded from the Internet or converted
from your CD collection.
See your Owner Manual for more
information and complete operating
instructions.
Retained Accessory Power
Your vehicle’s audio system has a
Retained Accessory Power (RAP) fea-
ture that allows the radio to continue
working for up to 10 minutes once the
key is turned from RUN to OFF or until
the driver’s door is opened.

5
Setting the Clock
Set the clock by pressing and holding
the DOWN (for hour) and UP (for
minute) arrows on all radios.
Additional Radio Features
Some Cavalier radios have other
features, such as Automatic Volume,
which automatically adjusts the volume
higher with road speed to make up for
road and wind noise as you drive.
The Radio Data System (RDS) receives
many types of information, such as traf-
fic and emergency alerts, and identifies
stations by their format types.
XM Satellite Radio is available for a
service fee if your vehicle is equipped
with the appropriate upper-level audio
system.
See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.
Antilock Brake System (ABS)
Your vehicle may be equipped with an
antilock brake system (ABS), an
advanced electronic system that helps
prevent skidding when severe braking is
required. ABS and standard brakes
require different braking procedures
when experiencing emergency braking
situations. Your Owner Manual provides
both of these procedures in detail.
Don’t pump the brakes. Hold the brake
pedal down firmly and let ABS do the
work. You may feel a slight pedal pulsa-
tion or notice some noise, but this is
normal.
If the vehicle is not equipped with anti-
lock brakes, use a “squeeze” braking
technique. This requires you to push the
brake pedal with steadily increasing
pressure. Using this technique will pro-
vide maximum braking while maintaining
steering control.
See Section 4 of your Owner Manual.
Breakaway Mirrors
Your vehicle is equipped with
Breakaway Mirrors that can be easily
realigned after minor impacts.
Should the driver’s manual remote con-
trol lever fail to adjust the mirror after
impact, the control lever can be easily
reset by following the procedure in the
Owner Manual.
See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Accessory Power Outlet
The Accessory Power Outlet is located
on the passenger side of the console.
When using the accessory outlet, the
electrical load must not exceed five
amps. Some non-GM accessories may
not be compatible with the outlet and
could result in blown vehicle or adapter
fuses.
See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.
Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)
Your vehicle is designed so that the front
lights are always on when the ignition is
in the RUN position. This safety feature
illuminates your headlamps at reduced
brightness during the daylight to make it
easier for others to see the front of your
vehicle. This can be especially helpful in
the short periods after dawn and before
sunset.
The DRL system does not turn on the
taillamps, sidemarkers, parklamps, or
instrument panel lights.
Enhanced Traction System
(ETS) (with four-speed
automatic only)
Vehicles equipped with the four-speed
automatic transmission include a stan-
dard Enhanced Traction System (ETS) to
help minimize wheelspin. This is especial-
ly useful during slippery road conditions.
When the Enhanced Traction System is
limiting wheelspin, the LOW TRAC light
will illuminate in the instrument panel.
This light may also come on after hitting
a severe bump when traction is reduced
briefly.
The LOW TRAC light may indicate slip-
pery road conditions, so adjust your
driving accordingly. You may feel or hear
the system working, but this is normal.
See Section 4 of your Owner Manual.
The DRL system can be turned off
(while stationary) by setting the parking
brake before starting the vehicle. The
DRL system will come back on once the
parking brake is released.
See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Front Lamps
Your Cavalier’s headlamps, park/turn
signal lamps and fog lamps (if equipped)
are designed for ease of bulb replace-
ment without removing the entire lamp
assembly. During periods of high humidi-
ty, slight condensation may build up in
the lens housing. The condensation
should dissipate after several hours of
lamp operation.
See Section 5 of your Owner Manual.
Automatic Transaxle Fluid
(four-speed only)
The four-speed automatic transmission
is filled with DEXRON
®
III long life trans-
mission fluid. It is not necessary to
check the transmission fluid unless there
is a leak.
See Section 5 of your Owner Manual.
Rear Window Defogger
Your vehicle is equipped with a rear
window defogger, which is designed to
clear the center of the rear window first.
For optimum effectiveness, clear as
much snow and ice as possible from the
rear window. Then, with the ignition in
RUN, press the defogger button .
It may take more than one cycle to
adequately clear the rear window. The
defogger’s first cycle will turn off after
about ten minutes, and following cycles
will last about five minutes.
See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Child Seat Anchors
(LATCH system)
Your vehicle is equipped with the Lower
Anchorages and Top Tethers for CHildren
(LATCH) system. The LATCH system
requires a special child restraint seat
that has two lower anchor straps and
one upper tether strap. A label is applied
to the seatback at each anchor position
to help you find the lower anchors.
Anchors for the top tether straps are
located on the filler panel behind the top
of the seat cushion.
See Section 1 of your Owner Manual.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)
If your Cavalier is equipped with the
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system,
you can lock and unlock your doors or
unlock your trunk from a maximum of 30
feet away using the RKE transmitter.
To unlock the driver’s door, press the
UNLOCK button once. The headlamps
will flash twice, the dome light will come
on, and the security system will disarm.
Press UNLOCK again within five sec-
onds to unlock all the doors.
To lock all doors, press LOCK button.
If all doors and the trunk are closed, the
headlamps will flash once, the interior
lamps will turn off, and the vehicle anti-
theft system will arm.
Unlocking the Trunk
The trunk will unlock anytime the vehicle
symbol on the RKE transmitter is
pressed and the vehicle speed is less
than 2 mph. When the trunk is unlocked
using the transmitter, the security
system will be disarmed until the trunk is
opened and closed again or one minute
elapses. The security system will then
re-arm.
Panic Button
The horn will sound and the headlamps
and dome lamp will flash alternately for
two minutes when the panic button
(red with horn symbol) is pressed. Press
the button again, or turn on the ignition,
to cancel the alarm.
Radio Station Presets
The radio station presets can be
customized to each RKE transmitter by
first setting the stations and then using
the transmitter to lock the doors when
exiting the vehicle.
See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.
