xiv MVX1000 In-Car Digital Video System User Guide
Chapter 1 System Description
Overview
The MVX1000 System is an advanced video recording system intended for law enforcement patrol and
surveillance activities (see Figure 1-1). The system collects video evidence, enables reviewing and managing the
video incidents and adding metadata evidence files (data retrieved by the in-car system or entered by the officer
during operation).
The in-car MVX1000 system consists of the MVX1000 Unit, Mobile Computer or a LCD Control Head running a
user interface application, Cameras, Wired Microphones, Wireless Microphones and other components installed
inside the vehicle (see In-car MVX1000 System Components on page 1-3). Using a combination of automatic and
manual functions, the officer operates the in-car system to document law enforcement incidents and other dynamic
policing situations.
The Data Transfer System is generally installed in a garage or external parking place of a Back Office Facility
where the agency vehicles are parked. Video and metadata evidence files recorded by the in-car MVX1000
System are transferred automatically or manually over wire, wireless Local Area Network (LAN) connection or
Wide Wireless Area Network to a Back Office Server through a Wire/Wireless Access Point/Cellular radio or a
Manual Upload Station for processing the evidence.
The Back Office Server, located in a precinct, headquarters or station facility, consists of computer hardware and
software tools for performing data management functions quickly and efficiently and exports the evidence on a
media such as DVD to be presented in court.

Listen to sound from all in-car and remote wireless microphones
Control the behavior of the MVX1000
Initiate an upload of the stored video and metadata of incidents to the back-end office
Download software updates to the MVX1000 System
The MVX1000 features the following recording capabilities:
Simultaneously record live-video, audio, input data feeds and other metadata and combine them
into a single package.
Trigger recording from various manual (MVX1000 panel or on-screen button in the mDVR User
Interface Application)
Trigger automatic recording from various input sources (Wireless microphone REC Button, Siren
signal, emergency lights signal, Crash Sensor Signal or other vehicle events)
MVX1000 system administration includes:
Centralized management by application (back office DMMS application) for changing the in-car
system settings
Management of the MVX1000 Unit recording settings via the Local Management Tool (LMT)
application
Time synchronization with GPS (also during recording)
Power Management
IMPORTANT While reading this chapter, you may observe that certain hardware features have been
configured to meet the specific requirements of your agency. Before using the MVX1000
system installed in your vehicle, ensure you are familiar with the specific hardware setup of
your vehicle.
System Description 1 - 3
In-car MVX1000 System Components
The MVX1000 system may include the following components (see Figure 1-2):
MVX1000 Unit: An advanced digital video recorder for capture, storage and retrieval of video,
audio and related metadata on a removable Solid-State Drive (SSD) memory device. The
MVX1000 is controlled by a Mobile Digital Video Recorder (mDVR) User Interface Application that
runs on a Mobile Workstation or Mobile Laptop or by the LCD Control Head. The MVX1000 also
serves as a client/server unit that communicates by wired or wireless LAN with the docking station
for uploading the evidence files and downloading software updates.
Front/Rear View Camera: A high resolution, zoom-controlled color camera. The camera is used
for recording video outside the vehicle. Up to three such cameras can be used in a vehicle to
capture the view from the front, side and rear windows of the vehicle.
Motorcycle Camera: A high resolution, fix zoom color camera. The camera is used for recording
video when installed on motorcycle.
Passenger Camera: A compact camera with fixed wide angle lens and a smart Infrared (IR)
capability for low light video recording. The camera is used to capture activity in the back seat area
of the vehicle under any lighting conditions.
Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Antenna: Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) diversity
antenna for wirelessly uploading recorded video instances and metadata evidence files to the back
office server.
GPS Antenna: The MVX1000 includes an internal GPS receiver. The unit uses received signals
from satellites to determine the accurate location of the vehicle and for time tracking. The GPS
readings are part of the metadata files that complement the video events stored in the MVX1000.
Wireless Microphone: A Wireless Microphone is an audio transmitter that enables a police officer
to record sound within range of the vehicle. The Wireless Microphone can also be used to remotely
trigger recording (recording is stopped using the mDVR User Interface Application). The
microphone is docked to a Charging Cradle mounted inside the vehicle. Up to two Wireless
Microphones can be simultaneously connected to the MVX1000 system.
Wired Cabin Microphone: A Wired Cabin Microphone can be used within the vehicle to record
voice and ambient audio inside the vehicle.
