READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS
BEFORE USING THIS APPLIANCE
INSTRUCTIONS PERTAINING TO A RISK OF INJURY
GENERAL
A. GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS
1. All grounded, cord-connected tools:
In the event of a malfunction or breakdown,
grounding provides a path of least resistance for
electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock.
This tool is equipped with an electric cord having an
equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding
plug. The plug must be plugged into a matching outlet
that is properly installed and grounded in accordance
with all local codes and ordinances.
Do not modify the plug provided – if it will not fit the
outlet, have the proper outlet installed by a qualified
electrician.
Improper connection of the equipment-grounding
conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.
The conductor with insulation having an outer
surface that is green with or without yellow stripes
is the equipment-grounding conductor. If repair or
replacement of the electric cord or plug is necessary,
do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to
a live terminal.
Check with a qualified electrician or service personnel
if the grounding instructions are not completely
understood, or if in doubt as to whether the tool is
properly grounded.
Use only 3-wire extension cords that have 3-prong
grounding plugs and 3-pole receptacles that accept
the tool’s plug.
Repair or replace damaged or worn cord immediately.
2. Grounded, cord-connected tools intended for use on a
supply circuit having a nominal rating less than 150V:
This tool is intended for use on a circuit that has an
outlet that looks like the one illustrated in Sketch
A in Figure 1. The tool has a grounding plug that
6
BENCH GRINDER ENG
looks like the plug illustrated in Sketch A in Figure
1. A temporary adapter, which looks like the adapter
illustrated in Sketches B and C, may be used to
connect this plug to a 2-pole receptacle as shown
in Sketch B if a properly grounded outlet is not
available. The temporary adapter should be used only
until a properly grounded outlet can be installed by
a qualified electrician. The green-colored rigid ear,
lug and the like, extending from the adapter must be
connected to a permanent ground such as a properly
grounded outlet box.
3. Grounded, cord-connected tools intended for use on
a supply circuit having a nominal rating between 150-
250V, inclusive:
This tool is intended for use on a circuit that has an
outlet that looks like the one illustrated in Sketch D in
Figure 1. The tool has a grounding plug that looks like
the plug illustrated in Sketch D in Figure 1. Make sure
the tool is connected to an outlet having the same
configuration as the plug. No adapter is available
or should be used with this tool. If the tool must be
reconnected for use on a different type of electric
circuit, the reconnection should be made by qualified
service personnel; and after reconnection, the tool
should comply with all local codes and ordinances.
4. Permanently connected tools:
This tool should be connected to a grounded metal
permanent wiring system; or to a system having an
equipment-grounding conductor.
B. FOR ALL DOUBLE-INSULATED TOOLS
1. Replacement parts
When servicing use only identical replacement parts.
2. Polarized Plugs
To reduce the risk of electric shock, this equipment
has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the
other). This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one
way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse
the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified
electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change
the plug in any way.
C. FOR ALL TOOLS AS APPLICABLE
1. KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and in working order.
2. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form
habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting
wrenches are removed from tool before turning it on.
3. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and
benches invite accidents.
4. DON’T USE IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT. Don’t
use power tools in damp or wet locations, or expose
them to rain. Keep work area well lighted.
5. KEEP CHILDREN AWAY. All visitors should be kept
safe distance from work area.
6. MAKE WORKSHOP KID PROOF with padlocks, master
switches, or by removing starter keys.
7. DON’T FORCE TOOL. It will do the job better and safer
at the rate for which it was designed.
8. USE RIGHT TOOL. Don’t force tool or attachment to
do a job for which it was not designed.
9. USE PROPER EXTENSION CORD. Make sure your
extension cord is in good condition. When using an
extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough
to carry the current your product will draw. An
undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage
resulting in loss of power and overheating. Table 1
shows the correct size to use depending on cord
length and nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use
the next heavier gage. The smaller the gage number,
the heavier the cord.
10. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do not wear loose clothing,
gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets, or other jewelry
which may get caught in moving parts. Nonslip
footwear is recommended. Wear protective hair
covering to contain long hair.
11. ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES. Also use face or
dust mask if cutting operation is dusty. Everyday
eyeglasses only have impact resistant lenses, they
are NOT safety glasses.
12. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to hold work
when practical. It’s safer than using your hand and it
frees both hands to operate tool.
13. DON’T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance
at all times.
14. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp
and clean for best and safest performance. Follow
instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
15. DISCONNECT TOOLS before servicing; when
changing accessories, such as blades, bits, cutters,
and the like.
16. REDUCE THE RISK OF UNINTENTIONAL STARTING.
Make sure switch is in off position before plugging in.
17. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES. Consult the
owner’s manual for recommended accessories. The
use of improper accessories may cause risk of injury
to persons.
18. NEVER STAND ON TOOL. Serious injury could occur if
the tool is tipped or if the cutting tool is unintentionally
contacted.
19. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further use of the
7
BENCH GRINDER ENG
tool, a guard or other part that is damaged should
be carefully checked to determine that it will operate
properly and perform its intended function – check
for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving
parts, breakage of parts, mounting, and any other
conditions that may affect its operation. A guard
or other part that is damaged should be properly
repaired or replaced.
20. DIRECTION OF FEED. Feed work into a blade or cutter
against the direction of rotation of the blade or cutter
only.
21. NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNING UNATTENDED. TURN
POWER OFF. Don’t leave tool until it comes to a
complete stop.

ASSEMBLY
NOTE:
Before using the tool, read the instruction
book carefully.
CAUTION! During use, it is important not to
overload the grinder. The grinder should run
at close to full speed. If you are applying too much
pressure, the grinder will start to slow down. Under these
conditions, remove the part being ground and allow the
grinder to return to full speed. Re-apply the part to the
grinder, but with a little less force.
All of the grinders are supplied with grinding discs
designed for metal use only. The grinding of Copper,
Brass, Aluminum, Wood or other similar materials will
“clog” the grinding disc.
IMPORTANT: Remove the power plug from
the electrical socket before carrying out any
adjustment, servicing or maintenance.
1. FITTING AND ADJUSTING THE SPARK ARRESTERS
(SEE FIG.A)
Insert a screw (a) through the spark arrester slot and fix
onto the wheel guard with a screwdriver (not supplied).
To adjust the spark arrester, loosen the screw and slide
the deflector up or down. Make sure that the bottom edge
is less than 5/64”(2mm) from the surface of the disc, but
not touching the disc.
Rotate the disc by hand one full rotation to ensure the
disc can rotate without contacting the spark arrester.
Firmly tighten the screw retaining the spark arrester.
2. FITTING AND ADJUSTING THE EYE SHIELDS
(SEE FIG.B, C, D)
NOTE: Always ensure the eye shields are correctly fitted
before the grinder is used. Eye shields must be fitted over
each grinding disc on all bench grinders.
Install the eye shield as shown in Fig.B & C.
Remove both eye shields from packaging, attach the
shields onto the two mounting brackets. Fix and tighten

the mounting brackets firmly to the screw holes on the
inner guard. Make sure the eye shields are securely
mounted, and positioned to deflect debris coming from
the wheel.
NOTE: The Magnifier eye shield features a magnifying
glass incorporated into the design to provide greater
visibility and improved accuracy.(SEE FIG.D)
3. FITTING THE WORK RESTS (SEE FIG.E, F)
The work rests are required for each high speed grinding
disc to assist in grinding operation.
CAUTION: Never use a bench grinder on which
the work rest has not been fitted or where the
work rest has not been correctly adjusted.
NOTE: The work rests are right and left-handed. Follow
the diagrams to ensure the work rest is fitted to the
correct side.
1) Hold the work rest in the correct position against the
inner surface of the wheel guard. Fit the securing screws
(b) through the work rest and the guard.
2) Tighten the securing knob (5) sufficiently to support
the work rest but still allowing the work rest to slide
inwards and outwards.
3) Slide the work rest with a maximum distance of 5/64”
(2mm) from the disc. Rotate the disc one full revolution by
hand to ensure the disc does not contact the work rest.
4) Tighten the securing knob (5) firmly to retain the
assembly. Repeat the assembly operation for the other
work rest.
4. MOUNTING THE GRINDER
The base of the grinder has two holes on both sides.
These holes accept bolts (not supplied) less than 3/8”
(10mm) in diameter. Mounting the grinder to a solid level
surface is recommended.
Where the grinder is to be mounted to a steel work bench
(not supplied), it is advisable to place a piece of wood
between the bench and grinder then bolt through the
grinder and timber into the bench. This further assists to
reduce vibration.
IMPORTANT:
When directly mounting the grinder ensure the surface
under the grinder is flat and clean.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANT:
Ensure that the eye shields, spark arresters, and the work
rests are fitted and correctly adjusted and that you are
wearing safety gear including eye, hearing and breathing
protection before using the tool.
WARNING: Never attempt to grind Magnesium.
Only use the front face of the grinding disc but
not the sides. Please note that the work piece can get
very warm. It may be necessary to cool a work piece by
dipping it in a coolant or in water. Do not apply coolant or
water to the grinding disc.
- Turn the disc by hand to make sure it does not touch
the guard, eye shields, spark arresters or work rests and
runs freely.
- Stand to one side, turn the switch on and allow the
motor to reach full speed.
- Support the work piece on the work rest and gradually
feed the work piece onto the disc.
NOTE: Traverse the work piece across the full width of
the disc to prolong its flat surface.
- If the grinding operation causes the motor speed to
noticeably decrease, pull back the work piece, allow
the motor to regain full speed and restart the grinding
operation, but apply less force.
1. ON/OFF SWITCH (SEE FIG.G)
To turn the grinder on, press the On/Off switch to the
position marked “ON.
To turn the grinder off, press the On/Off switch to the
position marked “Off.
2. CHANGING A GRINDING DISC (SEE FIG.H, I)
IMPORTANT:
Remove the power plug from the electrical socket
before changing a disc.
1) Remove the retaining screw and take off the tool rest.
2) Remove the retaining screw and take off the spark
deector.
3) Take off the three retaining screws and remove the
outer guard.
4) Use the wrench to fix one side nut, rotate the wrench
to release the other side nut at the same time. Then
remove the retaining nut, outer flange and the wheel.
NOTE: The wheel on the left-hand side of the grinder
has a left-hand thread and is unscrewed in a clockwise
direction. The wheel on the right-hand side of the grinder
has a right-hand thread and is unscrewed in an anti-
clockwise direction.
5) Fit the replacement wheel on the shaft ensuring that
there is a blotter between the wheel and clamp washers
on each side of the wheel, and ensure the wheel is a slide
fit (not loose) on the spindle.
6) Replace the outer flange and retaining nut (see the
Note above regarding the direction of rotation of the nut).
10
BENCH GRINDER ENG
7) Tighten the nut. Do not over tighten.
8) Replace the outer guard.
9) Replace the retaining screw, spark deflector and tool
rest.
10) Re-adjust the tool rest and spark deflector.
11) Rotate the wheel by hand to check for free movement
and proper adjustments.
12) Plug in the grinder, put on eye protection, stand to one
side and run the grinder at full speed for several minutes.
MAINTENANCE
Remove the power plug from the electrical socket
before carrying out any adjustment, servicing or
maintenance.
If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by
the manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified
persons in order to avoid a hazard.
GRINDER ADJUSTMENTS
During the life of the grinder, some adjustments are
required to maintain a safe working environment. Please
ensure the following:
•Alwaysadjusttheeyeshieldstothemostcomfortable
and most effective angle to suit the task being performed.
•Asthewheelswear,thesparkarrestersmustbe
adjusted to ensure that the distance from its bottom edge
to the wheel surface is not more than 5/64” (2mm).
•Asthewheelswear,theworkrestsmustalsobe
adjusted to make sure that the distance is not more that
5/64”(2mm) from its edge to the wheel surface.
LUBRICATION
1. All models use pre-lubricated sealed ball bearings for
the motor and do not require lubrication.
2. If the discs do not rotate freely, the bearings should be
replaced by an authorized service center.
CLEANING
1. Keep the outside of the grinder clean by brushing
grinding dust and dirt away from all areas where the dust
tends to build up. Wear eye protection when brushing.
2. Wipe the guards and grinder with a soft damp cloth. A
mild detergent can also be used.
3. Wipe the eye shields with a soft damp cloth, making
sure not to scratch the surface. A mild detergent can also
be used.
CAUTION: Never use caustic agents, petrol based
cleaners, alcohol or any other cleaning agents. Do
not wet down the grinder.
GENERAL INSPECTION
Regularly check that all the fixing screws are tight. They
may vibrate loose over time.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Although your new bench grinder is really very simple
to operate, if you do experience problems, check the
following:
1. GRINDER WILL NOT START
Check that there is electrical power at the socket; test
with an electrical screwdriver or another electrical
appliance; check the connections in the plug; correct
and tighten poor connections; check the fuse; if suspect
replace with correct rating.
2. WHEEL WOBBLES OR VIBRATES
Check that the lock-nut is tight. Check that the wheel
is correctly located on the shaft and locating washer.
If excessive pressure has been used or the wheel has
“caught”, it may be damaged enough to vibrate. DO NOT
USE if there is any evidence that the wheel is damaged.
Remove it and replace with a new wheel. Dispose of old
wheels sensibly.
3. WHEEL LEAVES ROUGH FINISH.
Too much pressure on the wheel can cause a poor
surface finish. If working with aluminum or similar soft
alloy, the wheel will soon become clogged and will not
grind effectively.
There are no other user serviceable parts in your
bench grinder.
