YARWAY IMPULSE STEAM TRAPS, SERIES 60Y AND 60R
INSTALLATION, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
SECTION 3 - INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE
1. To prolong trap life and assure proper
operation, it is recommended to clean
strainer screens. When fitted with a blow
down valve, screens can be cleaned simply
by opening this valve.
2. Check for proper trap operation by one of
the following methods:
a.
Hold a screw driver or metal rod against
the bonnet and listen to the characteristic
clicking sound as the valves opens and
closes.
b. Use test valve at rear of trap to observe
operating conditions.
3. When trap is cold - If trap does not open, first
check and clean the strainer. Since the trap
interior may also be clogged by scale or dirt,
disassemble and clean.
4.
When trap is hot - If the trap remains open,
discharging condensate continuously, it may
be undersized in relation to the load. Check
that the trap size and safety factor conform
to the operating conditions. If the trap fails to
shut off, scale or dirt may be trapped in the
working parts. Traps can be cleaned under
full steam pressure by removing the cap nut
and turning the control cylinder stem up and
down several times with a screw driver. If this
does not eliminate the trouble, disassemble
the trap and clean as described below.
Excessive back pressures may cause
trap malfunctions. In that event, see
Section 3 under “Working Pressures and
Back Pressures.” High back pressures may
be caused by overloaded backflows, open or
leaking by-passes or malfunctioning traps.
Check for cause and correct.
SECTION 4 -
DISASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY
Disassembly
1. Remove cap nut (7). Loosen control cylinder
(5) by screwing the lock nut upwards several
turns using a wrench and screw driver.
Mark the initial setting positions to serve as
a guide during reassembly. (Repair parts,
which are sold separately, are factory-set
and provided with a lock pin, so that guide
marks are unnecessary.)
2. Remove the bonnet assembly.
3. Remove lock nut and screw control cylinder
down until it extends approximately 1.75 cm
beyond lower edge of bonnet.
4.
The outer diameter of the valve disc is larger
than the bore of the control cylinder’s open
end. To remove valve, cock it at an angle
inside the cylinder and gently roll or pull it
out. If the valve does not come out easily,
avoid damaging valve or control cylinder by
removing valve as follows: Push valve all the
way into cylinder, place pliers around control
cylinder near open end, squeeze very lightly,
cock valve piece and tilt valve out of the
cylinder. Replace valve in the reverse manner.
5. Clean valve and interior of control
cylinder by wiping with a rag, or by using
a non-corrosive solvent. Use a paper clip
to clean oxide deposits from orifice in top
of valve. Under no circumstances should
crocus cloth or tools be used to clean the
surfaces of trap parts.
Reassembly
If trap parts are not damaged, reassemble
as follows: (When installing a new Repair Kit,
following accompanying instructions.)
1. Be sure all parts are clean and no dirt
enters trap during assembly.
2. Insert valve piece in control cylinder (see
“Disassembly, Section 4) and screw cylinder
up in bonnet until head of stem appears
above top of bonnet.
3. Replace lock nut (beveled corners up), line
up guide marks on nut and stem and tighten
lightly. (When installing a new Repair Kit,
line up holes in lock nut and stem, insert
lock pin and tighten lightly.)
4. Clean mating surfaces of bonnet and body.
Screw bonnet assembly into trap.
CAUTION
Be sure valve enters opening in valve seat.
5. Clean surfaces of bonnet and cap nut, install
cap nut and gasket, screw on cap nut and
tighten firmly.
