Setting Up the Digital Recorder

Connect the supplied power cable.
a The POWER indicator turns on, and a message “PLEASE
SET THE CLOCK” appears on the monitor screen.
Press the MENU button, and turn the S-dial three
turns clockwise.
Turn the J-dial to select the display language,
and then turn the S-dial.
Available languages include ENGLISH, FRANÇAIS, and
ESPAÑOL.
Turn the S-dial to set the clock.
J-dial: Turn to adjust the setting.
S-dial: Turn clockwise to save the setting.

To switch to another full-screen video:
Press the camera selection button (camera
number) that corresponds to your desired
camera.
To monitor four cameras at a time using the
quad-screen display:
Press the QUAD button.
a The quad-screen switches to display the next set of
cameras each time you press the button.
To monitor nine or sixteen cameras at a time
using the multi-screen display:
Press the MULTI button.
a The monitor screen toggles between the multi-9 and
multi-16 screens each time you press the button.
¡The DSR-3709 (9-channel model) supports only the multi-9 screen.

To zoom in a particular camera view:
Press the PLUS button.
¡To specify which camera view to zoom in, select the corresponding
camera number using the camera selection button.
Automatic screen scrolling:
Press the SEQUENCE button.
¡Press the button again to stop screen scrolling.
¡When you press this button in the quad-screen, the quad-screen is
automatically switched to display subsequent sets of cameras.
Viewing on the monitor connected to the
MON2 terminal:
Press the MON2 button, and then choose the
camera to monitor using the camera selection
button.

Press the REC/STOP button while monitoring a
camera.
a The recorder starts recording the video from the current
camera.
To stop recording, press and hold the REC/STOP
button for about three seconds.
To use other recording types:
In addition to normal recording (which uses the normal recording
area), the following recording types are available:
¡Timer-controlled recording (using the normal recording area)
You can schedule a recording to occur at your specified times.
See page 51 of the Instruction Manual.
¡Alarm recording (using the alarm recording area)
The recorder automatically starts recording in response to an alarm
input from an externally installed alarm switch or a motion sensor.
See page 55 of the Instruction Manual.
¡Pre-alarm recording (using the alarm recording area)
The recorder also records the image and sound for the period
immediately before an alarm input to assist in analyzing the alarm
condition.
See page 57 of the Instruction Manual.

About the internal hard disk:
The internal hard disk has a set of preconfigured settings such as for
the recording area allocations and recording modes. Make sure that
these settings suit your purpose.

To play back video in the full-screen display:
Press the PLAY/STOP button.
a The video is played back from the point where recording
started, and the operation display shows “ ”.
¡Use the camera selection button to select the camera whose video
to play back.
¡The recorder pauses playback once it has reached the end of the
video, and the operation display shows “ ”.
¡To stop playback, press the PLAY/STOP button again.
¡Fast-forward/fast-reverse playback
During playback, you can turn the S-dial clockwise to fast-forward ( )
the playback or turn it counterclockwise to fast-reverse ( ) the
playback.
¡Releasing the dial resets the playback to normal mode.

¡When you press the SHUTTLE HOLD button during fast-forward/
fast-reverse playback, the recorder continues to fast-forward or fast-
reverse the playback without requiring you to hold the dial (Pressing
the button again resets the playback to normal mode).
To view still image frames:
Press the STILL button during playback.
a The recorder pauses to display the current frame as a still
image, and the operation display shows “ ”.
Pressing the button again resets the playback to normal
mode.
¡To scroll through the video frame by frame:
In still image mode, you can turn the J-dial clockwise to scroll through
the video one frame forward or turn it counterclockwise to scroll
through the video one frame backward.

To zoom in on the displayed video:
Press the ZOOM button in playback or live mode.
A zoom frame appears in the center of the
screen. Move the zoom frame to the desired
position.
To move the frame horizontally, simply turn the J-dial
clockwise or counterclockwise.
Turn the S-dial clockwise to confirm the horizontal position.
Then, turn the J-dial to move the frame up or down.
Turn the S-dial clockwise.
a The area enclosed by the zoom frame is enlarged by a
factor of two.
To exit from zoom mode, press the ZOOM button
again.

To display four playback views at a time
using the quad-screen display (when
multiple recorded video files are available):
Press the QUAD button.
a Each time you press the button, the quad-screen switches
to display the views for the next set of cameras.
To display nine or sixteen playback views at
a time using the multi-screen display (when
multiple recorded video files are available):
Press the MULTI button.
a The monitor screen toggles between the multi-9 and
multi-16 screens each time you press the button.
¡The DSR-3709 (9-channel model) supports only the multi-9 screen.

¡ALARM THUMBNAIL SEARCH
Searches for alarm-recorded video files (alarm recordings) and
displays a thumbnail list of search results; from this list, you can pick
any thumbnail to play back the corresponding video file.
• Turn the J-dial to select your desired thumbnail and then turn the
S-dial clockwise to start playback.
¡ARCHIVE AREA SEARCH
Searches the archive area (
see page 28 of the Instruction Manual)
for stored video files and displays a list of search results; from this list,
you can select your desired video file and play it back.

Other Search Modes:
The SEARCH menu, shown in step 1 on the previous page, allows
you to choose from various search modes.
¡ALARM SEARCH
Searches for alarm-recorded video files (alarm recordings) and
displays a list of search results; from this list, you can select your
desired video file and play it back.

Play back the video file you want to copy in the
full-screen format, and press the STILL button as
soon as your desired frame is displayed.
a Playback pauses.
Press the COPY button, and turn the S-dial
clockwise.
Turn the J-dial to select “COPY TO”, and then
turn the S-dial two turns clockwise.
ARCHIVE AREA:
Select this option when you want to temporarily save the
video in the archive area on the hard disk.
COMPACT FLASH:
Select this option when you want to save the video on a
CompactFlash card.
¡Insert your card into the CompactFlash card slot before selecting
the COMPACT FLASH option.
¡When your recorder is USB-connected with an optional CD-R/RW
drive and you want to copy the video to the CD-R/RW drive, select
the CD-R/RW option. This option will appear only if the CD-R/RW
drive is connected.

Turn the J-dial to select the appropriate number
that determines the range of frames to save, and
then turn the S-dial clockwise.
Turn the J-dial to select the unit to identify
whether the number you selected in the previous
step is the number of pictures, seconds, minutes,
or events, and then turn the S-dial clockwise.
PICTURES: Copies as many video frames as you specified.
SECONDS: Copies the video frames within the range you
specified in seconds.
MINUTES: Copies the video frames within the range you
specified in minutes.
EVENTS: Copies archive area data that corresponds to the
number of events you specified (this option is
only displayed when you copy video from the
archive area).
¡Complete the HOW MANY field by specifying the number in step 4
and then specifying the unit in step 5 (For example, set this field to
“10PICTURES” to copy 10 frames in total from multiple channels;
“5SECONDS” to copy frames within 5 seconds). Copying is not
possible if the specified frames or time do not reside within the
allowable setting range.
Select your desired channel.
¡Use the camera selection button to select a camera channel
associated with the video you want to copy, or use the MULTI
button to select all camera channels.
Turn the S-dial clockwise with the cursor on
“COPY START”.
a The recorder starts copying the video. When the copy
process completes, a “COPY FINISHED!” message
appears.
¡When you copy video frames, a viewer application named DVR
Viewer 2 is also copied (CF, CD-R/RW).

a The video frames are copied to the card so that they can
be printed. Once the copy process completes, remove the
card from the slot.
Insert the card into the slot of a printer that
supports CompactFlash cards, and then print the
video frames.
¡Use the SANYO DVP-P1 Digital Photo Printer.
If you use a third-party printer, it is not guaranteed that the video
frames are correctly printed.

Configuration Basics:
Press the MENU button.
Turn the J-dial to select the MAIN MENU, and
then turn the S-dial clockwise.
1. INITIAL SET
Lets you configure “initial” settings such as display language and
clock settings.
2. RECORD SET
Lets you configure recording-related settings that control the
recording and alarm mechanisms.
3. GENERAL SET
Lets you configure general settings that control the display, alarm
buzzer, security, and so on.
4. SCREEN SET
Lets you configure screen-related settings that control multi-screen
display arrangements, automatic screen scrolling, color tone, and
so on.
5. POWER LOSS/USED TIME
Displays when any power failure occurred, how long the hard disk
has been in use, etc.
6. INITIALIZATION LOG
Displays the history of hard disk initialization.
7. COPY MENU SETTINGS
Allows you to save or load settings you configured via menus.

screen specific to that item.
(This screen appears when you have selected “1. INITIAL
SET”.)
If you are presented with submenu items, turn
the J-dial to select your desired submenu item,
and then turn the S-dial clockwise.

the screen specific to that item.
Configure each of the settings you want to
change.
J-dial: Turn clockwise or counterclockwise to select an option
or value.
S-dial: Turn clockwise to save your setting.
When you are done, press the EXIT/OSD button.

¡The following pages introduce most common menu-based
configuration tasks; however, refer to the Instruction Manual for

To name a camera:
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “1. INITIAL SET”.
On the INITIAL SET screen, choose “3. TITLE
SET”.
Use the camera selection button to specify the
number of camera you want to name.
You can enter a name using up to 10 characters
by repeating the following operation: turn the
J-dial until your desired letter or number is
displayed and then turn the S-dial clockwise.
When you are done, press the EXIT/OSD button.

To configure easy recording settings based
on your desired recording duration (in units
of days):
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “2. RECORD SET”.
On the RECORD SET screen, choose “1. NORMAL
REC EASY SET”.
On the NORMAL REC EASY SET screen, choose
“RECORDING DURATION BASE”.
Configure the recording duration and other
settings as needed.
qAllows you to set the recording duration in units of days.
wAllows you to turn on or off the timer-controlled recording
mechanism.

rAllows you to turn on or off the sound recording mechanism.
tShows the number of cameras.
yShows the recording rate.

On the RECORD SET screen, choose “1. NORMAL

Configure the recording rate and other settings as
needed.

To configure the hard disk recording area
allocations:
Configuring this setting erases any existing recording data.
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “2. RECORD SET”.
On the RECORD SET screen, choose
“2. RECORDING AREA SET”.
Change the normal and alarm recording area
allocations.
qShows the total capacity of the hard disk.
wAllows you to set the normal recording area allocation.
eAllows you to set the alarm recording area allocation.
When you are done, turn the S-dial
counterclockwise.
a A WARNING screen appears.
Turn the J-dial to choose “YES”, and then turn
the S-dial clockwise.
a The recording area allocations are changed and the hard
disk is initialized.
When you are done, press the EXIT/OSD button.

To configure the recording mechanism not
to overwrite existing data when the
recording areas are full:
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “2. RECORD SET”.
On the RECORD SET screen, choose
“3. RECORDING CONDITIONS SET”.
Set OVERWRITE to OFF for each of the normal
and alarm recording areas.
When you are done, press the EXIT/OSD button.

To schedule the recorder to perform timer-
controlled recording during the same hours
and at the same rate every day:
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “2. RECORD SET”.
On the RECORD SET screen, choose “6. TIMER
SET”.
Configure the timer-controlled recording settings.
Example: To schedule the recorder to perform timer recording during
the hours from 8:30 to 18:30 at the recording rate of 15FPS
every day, configure the settings as follows:
Press the EXIT/OSD button.
Press the TIMER button.
a The indicator turns on, and the timer-controlled recording
is put into standby. At the specified time, the timer-
controlled recording will start.

To configure pre-alarm recording:
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “2. RECORD SET”.
On the RECORD SET screen, choose “7. ALARM
REC MODE SET”.
Set “ALARM RECORDING” to “ENABLED”.
Set “PRE-ALARM RECORDING” to “ON”.
A WARNING screen appears. Choose “YES”, and
then turn the S-dial clockwise.
Configure the recording rate and duration.
When you are done, press the EXIT/OSD button.
To change the items indicated on the
operation display (status bar):
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “3. GENERAL SET”.
On the GENERAL SET screen, choose
“1. DISPLAY SET”.
Specify whether to show or hide each item by
choosing either ON or OFF.

To configure the passwords:
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “3. GENERAL SET”.
On the GENERAL SET screen, choose
“3. SECURITY LOCK SET”.
Configure each of the two passwords.
(Each password can consist of 4 to 8
alphanumeric characters.)
qAllows you to configure the administrator password.
wAllows you to configure the user password.
eAllows you to specify the access level required to perform recording
tasks (ADMIN/USER).
rAllows you to specify the access level required to perform camera
control tasks (ADMIN/USER).
Press the EXIT/OSD button.
Press and hold the SHUTTLE HOLD for about
three seconds.
a The LOCK indicator turns on to indicate that the security
lock is turned on.
¡Subsequent operations require the entry of the correct password as
appropriate.

To initialize the hard disk:
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “3. GENERAL SET”.
On the GENERAL SET screen, choose “4. HDD
SET”.
Choose “DISK INITIALIZE” and turn the S-dial
clockwise.
A WARNING screen appears. Choose “YES”, and
then turn the S-dial clockwise.
a The hard disk is initialized.
When you are done, press the EXIT/OSD button.
To remotely control an optional dome
camera:
¡This procedure assumes that your recorder is connected with an
optional dome camera that can be remotely controlled.
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “3. GENERAL SET”.
On the GENERAL SET screen, choose
“7. CAMERA CONTROL SET”.
On the CAMERA CONTROL SET screen, choose
“1. PROTOCOL/ADDRESS SET”.

To change the automatic scrolling interval:
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “4. SCREEN SET”.
On the SCREEN SET screen, choose “2. SEQUENCE
SET”.
¡If you want to specify different scrolling interval for each
camera, choose “INDIV.” for “2. SEQUENCE”.
Set the scrolling interval.
When you are done, press the EXIT/OSD button.
To adjust the live video color tone:
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “4. SCREEN SET”.
On the SCREEN SET screen, choose “4. COLOR
LEVEL SET”.
Use the camera selection button to specify the
number of camera whose color tone you want to
adjust.
Set the color tone.
The higher the value is, the more dense the image will be.
When you are done, press the EXIT/OSD button.

TIME”.
Review the information on the screen.

wDate/time at which the power was lost and restored (for the most
recent four occurrences)
eHard disk in-use time and DVR power-on time

To review the initialization log:
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “6. INITIALIZATION LOG”.

To copy the settings you configured via
menus:
When you are using more than one recorders, you can copy the
settings you configured via menus on the main recorder and load the
settings onto sub recorders so that you can easily and quickly
configure them.
Insert a CompactFlash card into the
CompactFlash card slot of the main recorder.
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “7. COPY MENU SETTINGS”.
qShows the firmware version number.
wAllows you to save the settings onto the card.
eAllows you to load the settings from the card.
rAllows you to copy the recording area settings as well.
¡If you set this option to YES and load the settings from the card,
existing video data are erased (the hard disk is initialized).
(Available when loading the settings from a CompactFlash card.)
Choose “SAVE MENUS TO CF” and turn the S-dial
clockwise.
A WARNING screen appears. Choose “YES”, and
then turn the S-dial clockwise.
a The settings will be saved onto the card.
Remove the card from the main recorder, and
insert it into the CompactFlash card slot of the
destination recorder.
Press the MENU button to open the MAIN MENU
screen, and choose “7. COPY MENU SETTINGS”.
Choose “LOAD MENUS FROM CF” and turn the
S-dial clockwise.
A WARNING screen appears. Choose “YES”, and
then turn the S-dial clockwise.
a The settings you configured via menus are loaded onto
the destination recorder.
