INTRODUCTION

The Portable Lumber Mill clamps to the chainsaw’s chain bar to cut rough logs

into slabs between 1/2 to 12 in. thick.

Consult your chainsaw owner’s manual for safety and operation instructions

before using this lumber mill.

WORK AREA

1. Operate in a safe work environment. Keep your work area clean, well-lit

and free of distractions. Place lights so you are not working in a shadow.

PERSONAL SAFETY

WARNING! Wear personal protective equipment approved by the Canadian

Standards Association (CSA) or American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

1. Always wear impact safety goggles that provide front and side protection

for the eyes. Eye protection equipment should comply with CSA Z94.3-07

or ANSI Z87.1 standards based on the type of work performed.

2. Wear the appropriate type of full-face shield in addition to safety googles,

as the work can create chips, abrasive or particulate matter.

3. Wear gloves that provide protection based on the work materials or to

reduce the effects of tool vibration.

a. Do not wear gloves when operating a tool that can snag the material

and pull the hand into the tool.

4. Wear protective clothing designed for the work environment and tool.

5. Non-skid footwear is recommended to maintain footing and balance in the

work environment.

6. Wear steel toe footwear or steel toe caps to prevent a foot injury from

falling objects.

7. Wear the appropriate rated dust mask or respirator.

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS

Control the tool, personal movement and the work environment to avoid

personal injury or damage to tool.

1. Do not operate any tool when tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol

or medications.

2. Avoid wearing clothes or jewelry that can become entangled with the

moving parts of a tool. Keep long hair covered or bound.

3. Do not overreach when operating a tool. Proper footing and balance

enables better control in unexpected situations.

UNPACKING

WARNING! Do not operate the tool if any part is missing. Replace the

missing part before operating. Failure to do so could result in a malfunction

Remove the parts and accessories from the packaging and inspect for damage.

Make sure that all items in the parts list are included.

ASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION

Numbered references in parenthesis (#1) refer to the included Parts List.

Tighten all nuts finger tight until ready to secure in place.

ASSEMBLE THE FRAME

1. Place both thickness rails (#10) down on a flat surface with the slots facing

up. Slide a carriage bolt (#9) into each slot to the midpoint.

2. Slide two carriage bolts into the slot of the on/off guide bar (#19). Place the

bar between both thickness rails and align all four carriage bolts (Fig. 1).

3. Place the tie bar (#17) over all four carriage bolts. Place a flat washer (#7)

over the two bolts that are furthest from you. Secure the inner bolt with an

M8 hex nut (#6) and tighten. Secure the outer bolt with a coupling nut

(#15) that is hand-tight (Fig. 2).

4. Place the handle (#25) onto the two bolts closest to you. The handle is

positioned between the two thickness rails. Place a lock washer (#23) over

each bolt end. Secure

the inner bolt with an

M8 hex nut (#6) and

tighten. Secure the

outer bolt with a

coupling nut (#15) that

is hand-tight (Fig. 3).

5. Slide a carriage bolt

(#9) into the slot in the left side of each thickness rail

(#10). Place an end bracket (#8) over the bolts with

the side flush to the thickness rail’s outer edge and the

flat bottom on the inside. Secure each bolt with a flat

washer (#7) and a hex nut (#6) (Fig. 4).

6. Attach the end bracket on the right side following the instructions in

Step 5. An exception is the end bracket will have the bottom flush with the

outer edge of the thickness rail and the side facing towards the inside.

7. Use a square angle, such as a roofer’s square, to square the inner side of

the thickness rails with the left bracket. Once they are square, carefully

tighten to secure the end in place. Repeat this process on the right side.

The result should be a rigid platform that is correctly squared.

ASSEMBLE THE ADJUSTABLE POSTS

8. Slide an M8 flat washer (#7) onto each of two M8x75 hex bolts (#11).

Insert the bolts through the bolt holes in the thrust end adjustment post

(#12), then into the thrust end clamping bracket (#13). Make sure the side

of the adjustment post with measurements on it is facing away from you

when assembling. Tighten

the M8 nuts (#6) on the

bottom of the clamping

bracket. Leave a gap loose

enough for the chainsaw’s

bar (Fig. 5, 6 and 7).

9. Slide an M8 flat washer (#7) onto each of two remaining M8x75 hex bolts

(#11). Insert the bolts through the bolt holes in the other adjustable post

(#22). Slide the bolts through

the ends of the nose guard

(#14), then through the

clamping bracket (#20).

Tighten the hex bolts (#11)

into the M8 nuts on the

bracket’s bottom. Leave a gap

loose enough for the chainsaw

bar (Fig. 8, 9 and 10).

10. Insert an end cap (#18) onto the end of each post.

11. Place the curved surface of the post clamp (#5) against the inner bend of

the u-clamp (#4). Insert

the u-clamp ends

through the bracket’s

bolt holes from the outer

side (Fig. 11). Slide a flat

washer (#5) over each

end of the u-clamp, then

secure with an M8x25 coupling nut (Fig. 12).

12. Repeat Step 11 on the right end bracket. The u-clamp is inserted through

the inner side of the end bracket and secured on the outer side.

13. Loosen the coupling nuts on the u-clamps enough to slide the adjustment

posts through post clamps. The thrust post is on the left and the nose

guard post is on the right. The engraved ruler should be visible on the

inner side of each post.

14. Tighten the carriage bolts.

COMPLETING ASSEMBLY

15. Insert the handle bar (#21) through the upright square bracket. The handle

bar must be flush with the outer surface of the end bracket (Fig. 13). If it

sticks out, push it in until it is flush. The bar can extend past the other end

bracket. Insert an end cap (#16) into each end of the handle bar (Fig. 14).

16. Insert a pan head screw (#1) into the square bracket on each side and

secure with an M5 hex head lock nut (#3).

17. Tighten all M8 nuts

and coupling nuts

with a wrench. Do

not overtighten, as

some nuts must

remain loosen for later adjustments (Fig. 15).

LUMBER MILL ADJUSTMENT

The lumber mill is attached to a chainsaw with a maximum bar length of 24 in.

The lumber mill must be adjusted to properly fit the bar length.

1. Loosen the M8 nuts on the right-side end bracket. Loosen the M5 Pan

Screw (#1) on the square clamp. Slide the bracket to the end of the

thickness rails (#10). Hand-tighten the M8 nuts to keep it in place.

2. Loosen the bolts on both post ends to widen the clamp’s gap.

3. Insert the chainsaw bar through the thrust side post gap, then through to the

nose guard end clamp. The cutting edge of the chainsaw faces away from you.

4. Position the thrust end clamp so it only touches the bar and not the engine

housing. Wrench-tighten the clamp to secure the bar.

5. Loosen the M8 nuts on the other post’s end bracket. Reposition the bracket

and post until the clamps will only touch the bar and not the chain. Wrench

tighten the M8 and M5 nuts on the bracket.

6. Wrench-tighten the clamp bolts.

7. Physically move the chain by hand to ensure it moves freely, before using

the assembled lumber mill.

HANDLE ADJUSTMENT

The handle is used to guide the mill during cutting and can be adjusted for

comfort. The handle should be spaced far enough to easily control the nose

guard end of the chainsaw while walking beside the lumber being cut. Have the

chainsaw in position for this adjustment.

1. Set the lumber mill assembly on a level surface at waist level.

2. Loosen the coupling nuts holding the on/off guide bar in place.

3. Hold the chainsaw handle, then move the guide bar along the rails until it is

in a comfortable position. Ensure it is far enough from the thrust side post

to control the other end during a cut.

4. Tighten the on/off guide bar coupling nuts hand-tight and then secure with

a wrench.

OPERATION

IMPORTANT! Check all nuts and connections before each use, as they may

be loose due to vibration.

A ripping chain is required for the best results.

The lumber mill requires a level surface for the thickness rails to glide across

during the first cut. A common solution is to lay and secure a ladder over the log.

This can be attached directly to the log or to a separate set up. Ensure the

connection method does not interfere with the initial cut, such as nails that catch

the chain during the cut.

Once the initial cut is complete, the lumber mill can rest directly on the lumber’s

smooth surface for subsequent cuts.

1. Adjust the cut thickness by loosening the u-clamps and sliding the frame

until the bottom of the thickness rail is even with the chosen measurement

on the post ruler. Wrench-tighten the connection nuts

2 Use a tape measure for a more accurate measurement. All three measurements

should come to the same result when properly set up.

a. Measure from the bar to the bottom of the end bracket (#8). Subtract

the thickness rail height from this measurement. Repeat the

measurement on the other end bracket.

b. Measure from the bar to the bottom of the on/off guide bar (#19).

c. Measure the difference in height between the bar and the chain’s tooth

with a precision caliper. Reduce the prior measurements by this amount.

3. Start the chainsaw.

4. Hold the chainsaw by the handle. Rest your arm on the lumber mill’s

handle bar while gripping the handle when operating the assembly.

5. Place the leading thickness rail onto the ladder or level lumber surface.

Angle the thrust side so the curved clamp ends guides the chainsaw into

the lumber. Straighten the lumber mill so it evenly cuts.

6. Push the lumber mill assembly forward at a slow even pace to prevent

jamming while cutting.

7. Insert a wedge into both sides of the cut every few feet to prevent it from

pinching or binding the chain bar.

8. Continue the cut until the lumber’s end is reached and follow through until

the chainsaw bar is free of the lumber.

9. Shut off the chainsaw.

10. Readjust the lumber mill’s thickness after the first cut to that of the desired

board thickness.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

1. Maintain the tool with care. A tool in good condition is efficient, easier to

control and will have fewer problems.

2. Inspect the tool components periodically. Repair or replace damaged or

worn components. Only use identical replacement parts when servicing.

3. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.

4. Only use accessories intended for use with this tool.

5. Keep the tool handles clean, dry and free from oil/grease at all times.

6. Maintain the tool’s labels and name plates. These carry important information.

If unreadable or missing, contact Princess Auto Ltd. for replacements.

WARNING! Only qualified service personnel should repair the tool. An

improperly repaired tool may present a hazard to the user and/or others.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Visit a Princess Auto Ltd. location for a solution if the tool does not function

properly or parts are missing. If unable to do so, have a qualified technician

service the tool.

DÉBALLAGE

ASSEMBLAGE ET INSTALLATION

Les numéros de référence entre parenthèses (n

1) se rapportent à la liste de

pièces comprise.

Serrez tous les écrous à la main jusqu’à ce qu’il soit prêt à fixer en place.

ASSEMBLAGE DU CADRE

1. Placez les deux rails d’épaisseur (n

10) sur une surface plane en orientant

les fentes vers le haut. Glissez un boulon de carrosserie (n

9) à mi-chemin

dans chacune des fentes.

2. Glissez deux boulons de carrosserie dans la fente de la barre de guidage de

marche/arrêt (n

19). Placez la barre entre les deux rails d’épaisseur et

alignez les quatre boulons de carrosserie (fig. 1).

3. Placez la barre de liaison (n

17) sur les quatre boulons de carrosserie.

Placez une rondelle plate (n

7) sur les deux boulons qui sont le plus

éloignés de vous. Retenez le boulon intérieur au moyen d’un écrou

hexagonal M8 (n

6) et serrez. Retenez le boulon extérieur au moyen d’un

écrou d’assemblage (n

15) et serrez-le à la main (fig. 2).

4. Placez la poignée (n

25) sur les deux boulons qui sont le plus près de

vous. La poignée est placée entre les deux rails d’épaisseur. Placez une

rondelle-frein (n

23)

sur l’extrémité de

chaque boulon. Retenez

le boulon intérieur au

moyen d’un écrou

hexagonal M8 (n

6) et

serrez. Retenez le

boulon extérieur au

moyen d’un écrou d’assemblage (n

15) et serrez-le la main (fig. 3).

5. Glissez un boulon de carrosserie (n

9) dans la fente

sur la gauche de chaque rail d’épaisseur (n

10). Placez

un support d’extrémité (n

8) sur les boulons de

manière à placer le côté à égalité du rebord extérieur

du rail d’épaisseur et le dessous plat à l’intérieur.

Retenez chaque boulon au moyen d’une rondelle plate

7) et d’un écrou hexagonal (n

6) (fig. 4).

6. Fixez le support d’extrémité du côté droit en suivant les instructions

présentées à l’étape 5. Une exception concerne le support d’extrémité qui

présentera un dessous venant à égalité du rebord extérieur du rail

d’épaisseur et du côté placé vers l’intérieur.

7. Au moyen d’une équerre, telle une équerre de couvreur, alignez le côté intérieur

des rails d’épaisseur avec le support gauche. Lorsqu’ils sont bien droits, serrez

soigneusement pour retenir l’extrémité en place. Procédez de la même façon du

côté droit. Il devrait en résulter une plate-forme rigide et bien droite.
