LE-180XT Installation Guide 1
Chapter 1
Overview
This installation guide is divided into two main sections:
Description: A general description of the module’s features
Installation: Step-by-step instructions for installing the module in the Cajun
M400 Gate Switch.
Description
The LE-180XT is a 12-port, asynchronous Ethernet module with shielded RJ-45
connectors that can accommodate both STP and UTP cabling infrastructures. It is
designed for use in Cajun M400 Gate Switches as part of the Ethernet connectivity
module family, and occupies one 6U slot. The LE-180XT complies with the
IEEE 802.3 10Base-T standard.
The LE-180XT benefits from an advanced Cajun M400 design enabling the network
to be extended over long distances. The module allows UTP interconnection up to
160 m (525 ft).
Ports 1 and 2 can be set to operate in port redundant mode. With port redundancy
enabled, the link connected to the primary port automatically switches to the backup
port in case of a main link failure.
The LE-180XT can be connected to any one of the Cajun M400 Ethernet backplane
buses. When bus redundancy mode is enabled, a malfunction on the selected primary
bus causes the module to automatically switch to the redundant bus. The module may
also function in Standalone mode as a Standalone repeater between all 12 ports,
disconnected from all buses.
For maximum reliability, the LE-180XT provides extensive diagnostic capabilities,
and resilient collision detection and correction. General module indicators note port
redundancy status and if the module is managed or unmanaged. Diagnostic indicators
for ports include Normal Link Operation, Receive Link Failure and Partitioning
Active.
The LE-180XT automatically detects crossed wiring errors and maintains link
operation by correcting the reversed polarity of the received data.
The LE-180XT is manageable by CajunView™, Lucent Technologies’ SNMP-based
network management system. Module parameters can be set by the network
management console or by on-board DIP switches.
The LE-180XT module enables pass through between Token Ring Modules.
Normally, Token Ring modules in a hub must be adjacent to preserve ring integrity. If
two Token Ring modules are placed on either side of the LE-180XT Ethernet module
they can still remain part of the same ring, as if the LE-180XT is transparent.

Installation
Preliminary Settings
Set the module parameters as desired using the on-board DIP switches. (Refer to
figure 2 and tables 2 and 3).
Caution: The LE-180XT contains components sensitive to electrostatic discharge.
To prevent such damage, always hold the card by its sides and do not touch circuit
board components unless instructed to do so.
Before handling the module or inserting it in the hub, touch the chassis of the hub to
get rid of any electrostatic charges in your body.
Hold the module with the front-panel to your left and the backplane connectors to
your right as illustrated in the diagram below.

To set the DIP switches:
The following table describes each DIP switch and its function.
The factory default setting for all ten DIP switches is OFF.
To set a switch ON, slide it upward in the direction shown by the ON arrow
Caution: Do NOT use a lead pencil. Lead shedding can cause serious damage.

The LE-180XT occupies one slot in the Cajun M400. The LE-180XT can be installed
or removed while power is connected to the hub.
1. Make sure all switches are set as required. (Refer to the Preliminary Settings
section.)
2. Insert the LE-180XT into any available position specified by your installation
plan. If you have management, or intend to add Lucent Technologies
management agents in the future do not insert the LE-180XT in the following
slots:
#17 and 18 in the Cajun M440
#10 in the Cajun M420
#5 in the Cajun M410
3. Secure the module using the screws at the top and bottom of the front panel. Do
not over-tighten the screws.
4. Identify and connect the appropriate cables to the module. (Refer to the connector
pin assignment table on page 6 for inter-hub cable connection information.)
5. Examine the front panel LEDs to verify that the module is operating as
configured. (Refer to Table 1 on page 2 for further diagnostic information.)
