1Introduction
The HPV-20™ System increases the uptime and reliability of the VeriFone®
Ruby SuperSystem®. The HPV-20 works with the Ruby system to provide the
following functions:
Backup: Take a snapshot of the Ruby system files including all
application and data files
Restore: Retrieve and load into the Ruby terminal a snapshot taken
earlier using the Backup function
Upgrade: Update the software on the Ruby terminal to a later version
previously downloaded into the HPV-20 System
Revert: Reload the software application that was running on the
Ruby terminal before the Upgrade function was run
In addition, the HPV-20 System allows the VeriFone Ruby Customer Support
Center to remotely conduct diagnostics while the Ruby SuperSystem is
operating.

System Requirements
In addition to the items listed on page 7, you must have the following to
install and use the HPV-20 System:
Ruby SuperSystem: The Ruby controller in a multiterminal system
or standalone terminal in a single-Ruby location must be connected to
the e-PC as shown in the procedure beginning on page 12.
RubyLink: When the Ruby application is installed, the “Select
Back_Office” option must be set to ‘RubyLink’ to assign the software
to communicate through the appropriate COM port.
HPV-20: YoumusthaveanHPV-20RubyCardforeachterminalin
your Ruby SuperSystem. If your controller or standalone terminal
already had a Ruby Card configured for features such as car wash,
fast food, or expanded PLUs, it must now have a new card configured
for these features and HPV-20. In multiterminal systems, each
workstation must have a Ruby Card which is only configured for
HPV-20.
Note: Failure to replace your Ruby Card with one that includes the
HPV-20 feature may produce the following message:
Note: When you receive your new Ruby Card for the controller or
standalone terminal, you can receive credit for your old card.
Call VeriFone Sales Support at 1-888-297-7604 and select
option 1 to request a Return Merchandise Authorization
(RMA) before sending in your old Ruby Card.

Unpack the System
Carefully inspect the shipping carton and its contents for any damage that
may have occurred during shipment. If anything appears damaged,
immediately file a claim with the shipping company or carrier and notify your
VeriFone representative.
Warning: Never use damaged equipment. A shock or fire
hazard may exist if equipment is energized in a
damaged condition.
Remove the following items from the shipping carton:
HPV-20 computer (e-PC)
e-PC power supply
Compact disk with HPV-20 Partitioning software
Compact disk with HPV-20 Imaging software
USB-to-serial, 9-pin converter
(2) 9-pin null-modem adapters
(2) 10-foot RS-232 shielded cables
HASP key
External modem
Software license agreements
Yellow warning label
Quick reference card
Remove any protective plastic wrapping from the components and place the
components on a table or countertop. Make certain that you have all the parts
listed above before you begin. Contact the VeriFone Ruby Customer Support
Center if you are missing any of them.
Keep the shipping carton and any packing material in case it is necessary to
move components from one location to another or to return the equipment for
service.
8HPV-20 Installation Guide
Choose a Location
Most sites place the HPV-20 system near the controller or standalone Ruby
terminal on top of the counter or under the counter. Wherever you put the unit,
select a location which meets the following requirements:
Distance: Within 50 feet (15.24 meters) of the Ruby terminal to
which it is connected
Power: 120 volts AC, 60 Hz
Temperature:
Operating: 23 to 104° F (0 to 40° C)
Non-operating: -40to158°F(-40to70°)C
Humidity: 15 to 95% relative humidity at 40° C with no
condensation
Avoid locations with the following characteristics:
Direct sunlight or objects that produce heat to reduce the risk of fire
Moisture
Excessive dust
Electrical “noise or devices that cause excessive voltage variations
such as air conditioners, fans, or high frequency security systems

Prepare for Installation
Multiterminal and Standalone Systems
Install the HPV-20 System in the following order, using the procedures
beginning on the next page:
1. Install the Ruby application software on the terminal.
Note: You may allow the software to continue installing while you
do the next procedure.
2. Set up the HPV-20 System hardware.
3. Install the HPV-20 System software on the e-PC.
4. Multiterminal Systems: Install the Ruby application software on the
workstations.
10 HPV-20 Installation Guide
Install the Ruby Software
Use software that supports the HPV-20 feature when installing or upgrading
the Ruby controller in a multiterminal system or standalone Ruby terminal in
a single-terminal system. Refer to the Gemstall Reference Manual.
Note: The HPV-20 enabled Ruby Card must be temporarily removed
when starting Genstall and replaced when the prompt, “Insert
HPV-20 Card now and press a key” is displayed.
If the Ruby terminal is connected to a back-office system using RubyLink for
communications, then RubyLink must be installed on two COM ports, which
requires a work-around. Do one of the following:
Multiterminal system: Install RubyLink on a COM port on a
workstation and connect cable from the USB-to-serial converter to
the port assigned below in step 2.
Standalone Ruby terminal: Contact the VeriFone Ruby Customer
Support Center for assistance in setting up a second COM port for
RubyLink on the single terminal.
Steps
Do the following when when selecting the site configuration in Gemstall:
1. Select ‘RubyLink’ as the “Back-Office” option in Gemstall.
Note: The back-office PC must run Gemcom32 to communicate
with the Ruby system when RubyLink is selected as the back-
office option in Gemstall.
2. Assign RubyLink to the COM port to which you will connect the
USB-to-serial, 9-pin converter. (In “Set Up the HPV-20 System
Hardware” procedures, see step 9.)
3. Select ‘HPV-20’.
4. Assign the HPV-20 primary COM port to COM 1 on the Ruby
controller and install all workstations as COM port “None”. Run the
RS-232 cable from the COM 1 port on the back of the Ruby terminal
to the red, null-modem adapter that is then connected to the serial port
of the e-PC. (In “Set Up the HPV-20 System Hardware” procedures,
see step 5.)

5. While Gemstall is running, assemble the HPV-20 System using the
Hardware Setup procedure on the next page.
12 HPV-20 Installation Guide
Set Up the HPV-20 System Hardware
The second step in installing the HPV-20 System is to set up the hardware.
The steps that follow use the ports on the e-PC noted in figure 2.
Steps
1. Place the yellow “Warning” label over the Ethernet Connection
located on the back of the e-PC.
2. Using the support stand, place the e-PC on its side with the white
ventilation grid facing up and the dark gray ventilation grid to your
right.
Note: The e-PC operates in this flat position or standing (with the
support stand) as shown in figure 1 on page 1.
3. Take one of the RS-232 cables and plug the
RJ-45 connector into the jack of the red, 9-pin
null-modem adapter.
4. Connect the null-modem adaptor into the
(dark green) serial port on the back of the
e-PC. (See figure 3.)

5. Plug the RJ-45 connector at the other end of the RS-232 cable into
COM 1 on the Ruby controller. (This step may be skipped until the
Ruby controller software is upgraded or installed.)
6. Take the second RS-232 cable and plug it into the second null-modem
adapter. (See figure 4.)
7. Connect the USB-to-serial, 9-pin converter to one
of the (black) USB serial ports on the e-PC.
8. Connect the 9-pin null-modem adapter to the other
end of the 9-pin converter. (See figure 4.)
Note: Do not connect the Ruby terminal to the e-
PC Ethernet port. ALWAYS plug the RS-232
cable into the null-modem adapter and only then plug the
null-modem adapter into the e-PC’s serial port.

9. Connect the other end of the RS-232 cable to any open COM port on
the Ruby except COM 3.
Note: When the software on the Ruby terminal is installed or
upgraded, assign RubyLink to this port.
