For the First Use
Unpack the unit and place it on a flat horizontal surface. Remove any inserted card
and poly bag. As there is manufacturing residue or oil remained in the toaster or
heating element, odor will usually be emitted for the first use. It is normal and will not
occur after several times use, for the first use it is suggested to operate according to
the below steps, except without bread. Then let the toaster cool down and begin
toasting the first slice.
Note: The toaster will not work, and the carriage handle cannot be locked down, until
the toaster is plugged in.
How To Toast Bread
To prevent jamming do not use your toaster with torn slices of bread. Make sure
the size and thickness of the slices of bread fit easily into the toast slots.
Always watch your toaster when in use. Never leave unattended.
1. Put bread slice into the bread slots, 4 slices can be inserted at most every time.
Note: Make sure the crumb tray is completely positioned in place
before using.
2. Plug the power cord into the outlet.
3. Set colour control knob to your desired colour. There are 7-setting levels:
1 is the whitest and 7 is the darkest. The “4” position of control knob can toast the
bread to golden colour.
Note: 1) Toasting colour for one slice Is darker than that for two slices at
the same level.
2) If toast continuously, toasting colour for the latter bread is darker than that for
the anterior bread even if the colour controller is set at the same level.
4. Press carriage handle down vertically until it is positioned in place, the indicator of
CANCEL will be illuminated. The appliance will begin at once. Once the bread has
been toasted to the preset colour, the carriage handle will be automatically pop up,
and the indicator will stop to flash.
Note: Only when the power supply is switching on, the carriage handle can
rest on the bottom of the slot.
5. During the toasting process, you may observe the toasting colour. Press the
CANCEL button to cancel the operation at any time if you are satisfied with
the colour.
Other Functions of Your Toaster
Reheat
If you want to reheat cold toasted bread, don’t adjust the colour controller. Insert the
toast, lower the carriage handle and press the REHEAT button and the indicator
besides it will be illuminated. In this mode, the toasting time is fixed, when time is
running over, the carriage handle will automatically spring up and end up the
reheating process.
Defrost
If the bread has been taken out from a refrigerator, don’t adjust the colour controller.
Insert the frozen bread. Set the colour controller to your desired colour. Press carriage
handle down vertically until it is positioned in place, then press DEFROST button and
the indicator besides it will be illuminated. In this mode, the bread will be toasted to
your desired colour.
Tips: If toasting two slices, they should be similar size, thickness and freshness. Old
(yesterday’s) bread contains less moisture, so makes crisper toast. Old or thin bread
cooks faster then fresh or thick bread, so use a lower setting.
Caution
1. If the toaster starts to smoke, press CANCEL button to stop toasting immediately.
2. Remove all protective wrapping prior to place in toaster.
3. Avoid toasting the food with extremely runny ingredients such as butter.
4. The bread slot is only applicable for toasting regular bread slice. Like the irregular
bread, you cannot toast it in the slot.
:Operation (see illustrations)
- (Type HPT440SB:) Insert one to four slices (or two large slices) of bread.
For optimum browning, always place the bread as close as possible to
the centre of the slots (fig. 1).
- Before switching on, select the degree of browning (fig. 2).
• Select a lower position (i.e. 1 or 2) for light browning, for toasting only
one slice or for dry bread.
• For medium browning set the browning controller to position 3-5.
• Select a higher position (i.e. 6 or 7) for darker browning, or for frozen
bread.
(When toasting a series of slices, no re-adjustment is required.)
- Switching on. The slices are lowered into the toaster by sliding the slide
switch downwards (fig. 3)
- When ready, the toast pops up automatically (fig. 4) and the toaster
switches off the heating elements.

position (fig. 6).
