Two orchestral sounds in the treble section
2
r
FR-7x
V-Accordion
Starting with system version 1.03, the FR-7x allows you to play two orchestral sounds simultaneously (as a layer). Each
note you play will then be sounded by two sounds (strings and violin, for example), which may come in handy for expres-
sive purposes.
Playing two orchestra sounds in
the Treble section (Layer Timbre)
Select the first orchestral sound:
1.
Switch on the FR-7x.
2.
Press the [ORCHESTRA] register.
3.
Press one of the registers [1]~[13] to select
the desired orchestral sound.
See “Orchestral sounds for the treble section” on
p. 29 in the Owner’s Manual for details.
Select the second orchestral sound (“Orch. Layer” sec-
tion):
4.
Press the [MENU/WRITE] button.
5.
Rotate the [DATA/ENTER] knob clockwise or
press the [DOWN] button to select the
“MENU 6 – Orchestra Edit” function group.
See “Selecting parameters” on p. 62 for how to select
parameters.
6.
Press the [DATA/ENTER] knob to enter that
group.
7.
Rotate the [DATA/ENTER] knob or the [UP]/
[DOWN] buttons to select the “6.12 Layer
Timbre” parameter.
8.
Press the [DATA/ENTER] knob to activate the
“PATCH” parameter.
9.
Rotate the [DATA/ENTER] knob to select the
second orchestral sound you want to play.
In this example, we selected the “Strings” sound.
Play few notes on the treble keyboard. You will hear
the selected orchestral sound together with the main
orchestral sound. Select “Off” if you no longer need a
second orchestral sound.
10.
Press the [DATA/ENTER] knob to confirm
your selection.
11.
Press the [EXIT/JUMP] button twice to
return in the main page.
NOTE
The following sounds cannot be layered with another
orchestral sound: any TW Organ sound, “HighLand”, “Zam-
pogna”.
Editing the second orchestral
sound (Layer Param)
Like for the first orchestral sound, the FR-7x provides
several parameters that allow you to edit the second
orchestral sound.
The available parameters are: Volume, Octave, Panpot,
Reverb Send, Chorus Send, Delay Send and Aftertouch
Pitch, Expr. Pedal.
They can be set on the new “6.13 Layer Param” page of
the “ORCH. EDIT” group. See “Selecting parameters” on
p. 62 for how to select the “6.13 Layer Param” page.
This page looks as follows:
The “PARAM” filed allows you to select the parameter
you wish to edit, and the “VALUE” field is used to set the
desired value for the selected parameter.
The table below lists the parameters you can select and
their setting ranges.

PARAM VALUE Description
Volume Off, -40~”STD”~+40
Default setting: “STD”
This parameter allows you to set the volume of the selected “Layer Timbre”
sound. This is a relative parameter, which means that its value is added to or
subtracted from the standard value (“STD”).
Octave -3~0~+3
Default setting: Depending
on the sound
This parameter allows you to transpose the selected “Layer Timbre” sound in
octave steps.
Panpot 63~1 Treb., 0, 1~63 Bass
Default setting: 30 Treb.
This parameter allows you to change the selected “Layer Timbre” sound’s
placement in the stereo sound field (i.e. between the left and right speakers)
to create a livelier sound image.
Rev. Send
0~127
Use these parameters to set the reverb, chorus or delay send level (how much
effect should be applied to the selected “Layer Timbre” sound). The higher the
value you set, the more the sound will be processed by the effect in question.
Cho. Send
Dly. Send
Aftert Pitch Off, 1/4 Down, 1/2 Down,
1/4 Up, 1/2 Up
Default setting: Off
The treble keyboard of the piano-type model generates aftertouch messages
(on the button-type model, aftertouch can be generated with the Master
bar). “Aftertouch” refers to the fact that you press a key even further down
after playing a note.
This effect allows you to bend the pitch down (temporarily lower the note) by
a quarter (“1/4 Down”) or a semi-tone (“1/2 Down”). Select “1/4 Up” or “1/2
Up” to bend the notes up a quarter or a semi-tone. Select “Off” to switch off
the selected “Layer Timbre” sound’s aftertouch recognition.
Expr. Pedal Off, On
Default setting: Off
Set this parameter to “On” if you wish to control the selected “Layer Timbre”
sound’s volume with an optional EV-series expression pedal connected to the
FBC-7.
Set this parameter to “Off” if you wish to control the selected “Layer Timbre”
sound’s volume with your movements of the bellows or via your playing
dynamics. See “Orchestral sounds and bellows/velocity control” on p. 128 in
the owner’s manual.

MIDI parameters of the second orchestral sound (Layer Timbre)
6.14 Layer MIDI Tx
A “6.14 Layer MIDI Tx” page has been added to the “6
ORCH. EDIT” menu. It contains a series of MIDI parame-
ters for the layer section you need to set one by one.
See “Parameters” on p. 114 in the owner’s manual for a
description of the available MIDI parameters.
These settings are saved along with all other Set
parameters, which allows you to use different MIDI set-
tings for each Set.
12.1 RealTime RX-TX
The “PART” parameter on the “12.1 RealTime RX-TX”
page now also allows you to select “Orch.Layer”, i.e. the
“Layer Timbre” part. Use “CHANNEL” to assign it the
desired MIDI channel.
See “MIDI channel numbers” on p. 109 in the owner’s
manual for details about this parameter.
12.4 Expression MIDI TX
The “PART” parameter on the “12.4 Expression MIDI TX”
page now also allows you to select “Orch.Layer”, i.e. the
“Layer Timbre” part. Use “VALUE” to assign it the desired
setting.
See “Specifying which parts transmit expression
messages” on p. 110 in the owner’s manual for details
about this parameter.

Guitar mode for the Orchestral Chord section
V-Accordion
r
5
The FR-7x’s Guitar mode allows you to play realistic guitar parts. When you activate this mode, all chord buttons trigger
6-note chords (like on a guitar) rather than the 3-note chords typical of an accordion.
This setting has been added to the “7.2 Lowest note”
parameter (see page 79 in the owner’s manual). Rather
than simply specify the lowest notes the chords can
play, you can also choose one of thee guitar chord voic-
ings (tablatures).
To select the “7.2 Lowest note” parameter,
see “Selecting parameters” on p. 62 in the
owner’s manual.
The display now looks more or less as follows:
Choose a “Gtr Table” option to take advantage of the
FR-7x’s Guitar mode, or a note to specify the lower
limit. See the table below:
Default setting: F
NOTE
Guitar mode can also be interesting for other sounds than
guitar. Feel free to experiment.

The following functions have also been added to the FR-7x’s original parameter set:
Expression Pedal
5.12 ORCH.BS EDIT Expression Pedal
6.11 ORCH. EDIT Expression Pedal
7.11 ORCH.CHD EDIT Expression Pedal
8.9 ORCH.FBS EDIT Expression Pedal
The “Expression Pedal” parameter of the various orches-
tral sections allows you to specify for each orchestral
sound whether its volume should be controlled using
an optional EV-series expression pedal connected to the
FBC-7 or not.
This allows for flexible control of the orchestral sounds
you are using. One example would be to activate
Expression Pedal control of the bass section’s TW organ
sounds, while the strings sound’s volume is controlled
via the bellows.
To select the desired “Expression Pedal”
parameter, see “Selecting parameters” on
p. 62 in the owner’s manual.
The display now looks more or less as follows
(depending on which page you selected):
The following table shows the available settings for
the “Expression Pedal” parameter.

Mode’
10.8 Bass&Chd Mode
A new “Belgium” setting (“Bs Rows Belgium”) is now
available for playing bass and chord notes. It simulates
the typical button layout used in Belgium where the
the bass and chord buttons are vertically aligned.
Selecting this mode obviously does not rearrange the
physical buttons. It will, however, make it easier for
players accustomed to a Belgian bass button layout, to
play the FR-7x. See the illustration on p. 10 for the note
assignments to the bass and chord buttons.
To select the “10.8 Bass&Chd Mode” param-
eter, see “Selecting parameters” on p. 62 in
the owner’s manual.
The display now looks more or less as follows:

10.17 Orch.Chord Touch
The velocity sensitivity can now be set separately for
the orchestral bass and the orchestral chord sections.
They thus no longer need to use the same setting.
To select the “10.16 Orch.Bass Touch” or the
“10.17 Orch.Chord Touch” parameter, see
“Selecting parameters” on p. 62 in the
owner’s manual.
The display now looks more or less as follows
(depending on which page you selected):
“10.16 Orch.Bass Touch” allows you to specify the
velocity sensitivity of the bass buttons when they are
used to play one of the orchestral sounds.
“10.17 Orch.Chord Touch” has the same function for
the chord buttons.
Neither has any effect on the “TW Lower” or “TW
Pedal” organ sounds.
See “10.15 Orchestra Touch” on p. 92 in the owner’s
manual for the available settings and their meaning.
10.18 Drum Touch
This newly added parameter allows you to specify the
velocity sensitivity of the drums sounds you can assign
to the bass and/or chord buttons. See “3.7 Bass Drum”
on p. 72, “3.8 Chord Drum” on p. 73 and “5.7 Bass
Drum” on p. 77 in the owner’s manual.
To select the “10.18 Drum Touch” parame-
ter, see “Selecting parameters” on p. 62 in
the owner’s manual.

New entry in the ‘Troubleshooting’ chapter
Please add the following entry to the “Troubleshooting” section in the Owner’s Manual:
The bellows exhibits an erratic behavior
If the bellows doesn’t work as expected, causing
notes to sound even while it is not moved, its sensors
may need resetting.
To do so, close the bellows, switch off the FR-7x, then
press and hold the [UP] and [DOWN] buttons while
switching the FR-7x back on. If this operation doesn’t
solve the problem, please contact your Roland dealer.
