4 Quick-clamping devices
The quick-clamping devices are used to adjust and fold
down the handlebar.

4 Safety Precautions
4.2 Intended Use
The STIHL RLE 240 lawn scarifier is intended for the
following uses:
– With the scarifying roller: scarifying the lawn
– With the combing roller: combing the lawn
The lawn scarifier must not be used when it is raining.
WARNING
ï¿­ Failure to use the lawn scarifier as intended may result in
serious or fatal injury to people and damage to property.
â–º Use the lawn scarifier with an extension cable.
â–º Use the lawn scarifier as described in this instruction
manual.
4.3 Requirements for the User
WARNING
ï¿­ Uninstructed users cannot recognise or evaluate the
dangers posed by the lawn scarifier. This may result in
serious or fatal injury to the user or other people.
â–º If passing on the lawn scarifier to another person:
provide them with the instruction manual also.
â–º Make sure that the user meets the following conditions:
– The user is rested.
– The user is physically, sensorily and mentally capable
of operating the lawn scarifier and working with it. If
the user is physically, sensorily or mentally impaired,
the machine must only be used under supervision or
following instruction by a responsible person.
– The user can recognise and evaluate the dangers
posed by the lawn scarifier.
– The user is aware that they are responsible for
accidents and damage.
– The user is of legal age or the user is being trained
under supervision in a profession in accordance with
national regulations.
– The user has received instruction from a STIHL
specialist dealer or a competent person before using
the lawn scarifier for the first time.
– The user is not impaired by alcohol, medicines or
drugs.
â–º If anything is unclear: consult a STIHL specialist dealer.
4.4 Clothing and Equipment
WARNING
ï¿­ Objects may be thrown up at high velocity while
working.This may result in injury to the user.
Observe the safety instructions on the electrical
connection and their measures.
Protect the lawn scarifier from rain and humidity.
Wear safety glasses.
â–º Read, understand and keep the instruction
manual.

â–º Wear long trousers made from resistant material.
ï¿­ Dust may be stirred up while working.Breathing in dust
may be harmful to health and cause allergic reactions.
â–º If dust is stirred up:wear a dust mask.
ï¿­ Unsuitable clothing may get caught in wood, brambles
and in the lawn scarifier.This may result in serious injury
to the user.
â–º Wear close-fitting clothing.
â–º Remove scarves and jewellery.
ï¿­ The user may come into contact with the roller during
cleaning, maintenance or transport.This may result in
injury to the user.
â–º Wear work gloves made from resistant material.
ï¿­ Wearing unsuitable footwear may cause the user to
slip.This may result in injury to the user.
â–º Wear sturdy, closed-toed footwear with high-grip soles.
4.5 Work Area and Surroundings
WARNING
ï¿­ Bystanding people, children and animals cannot
recognise or evaluate the dangers posed by the lawn
scarifier and high-velocity objects. This may result in
serious injury to bystanding people, children and animals
and damage to property.
â–º Maintain a distance from objects.
â–º Do not leave the lawn scarifier unattended.
â–º Make sure that children cannot play with the lawn
scarifier.
ï¿­ The lawn scarifier is not waterproof. Working in the rain or
in a damp environment may result in electric shock. This
may result in serious or fatal injury to the user and damage
to the lawn scarifier.
ï¿­ Electrical components of the lawn scarifier may produce
sparks. Sparks may cause fires and explosions in highly
flammable or explosive environments. This may result in
serious or fatal injury to people and damage to property.
â–º Do not work in a highly flammable or explosive
environment.
ï¿­ People may trip over the extension cable. This may result
in injury to people and damage to the lawn scarifier.
â–º Route the extension cable so that it is easily visible and
flat on the ground.
4.6 Safe Condition
4.6.1 Lawn Scarifier
The lawn scarifier is in safe condition when the following
conditions are met:
– The lawn scarifier is not damaged.
– The extension cable and its mains plug are undamaged.
– The lawn scarifier is clean and dry.
– The controls are working and have not been modified.
– If material removed from the lawn is to be collected in the
grass catcher box: the grass catcher box is correctly
attached.
– If material removed from the lawn is to be ejected to the
rear: the grass catcher box is detached and the discharge
flap is closed.
– The roller is correctly attached.
â–º Wear close-fitting safety glasses.Suitable
safety glasses are tested in accordance with
EN 166 or national regulations and
available commercially with the
corresponding marking.
â–º Keep bystanding people, children and
animals out of the work area.
â–º Do not work in the rain or in a damp
environment.

– Only genuine STIHL accessories for this lawn scarifier are
attached.
– The accessories are correctly attached.
WARNING
ï¿­ If not in safe condition, components may no longer
operate correctly and safety devices may be disabled.
This may result in serous or fatal injury to people.
â–º Use an undamaged lawn scarifier.
â–º Use an undamaged extension cable and mains plug.
â–º If the lawn scarifier is dirty: clean the lawn scarifier.
â–º If the lawn scarifier is wet: dry the lawn scarifier.
â–º Do not modify the lawn scarifier.
â–º If the controls are not working: do not use the lawn
scarifier.
â–º If material removed from the lawn is to be collected in
the grass catcher box: attach the grass catcher box as
described in this instruction manual.
â–º Only attach genuine STIHL accessories for this lawn
scarifier.
â–º Attach the roller as described in this instruction manual.
â–º Attach accessories as described in this instruction
manual or in the instruction manual for the accessories.
â–º Do not insert objects into the apertures in the lawn
scarifier.
â–º Replace worn or damaged warning signs.
â–º If anything is unclear: consult a STIHL specialist dealer.
4.6.2 Rollers
The scarifying roller and the combing roller are in safe
condition when the following conditions are met:
– The shaft, blades, spring-tines and attachments are not
damaged.
– The shaft, blades and spring-tines are not deformed.
– The roller is correctly attached.
– The blades and spring-tines are burr-free.
– The minimum length of the blades is not fallen below,
@ 19.2.
WARNING
ï¿­ In unsafe condition, parts of the blade and spring-tine may
come loose and be expelled.This may result in serious
injury to people.
â–º Use undamaged blades, spring-tines and attachments.
â–º If the minimum length of the blades is fallen
below:replace the scarifying roller.
â–º If anything is unclear:consult a STIHL specialist dealer.
4.7 Connection to the Mains
Contact with live components can result from the following
causes:
– The extension cable is damaged.
– The mains plug of the extension cable is damaged.
– The socket is incorrectly installed.
DANGER
ï¿­ Contact with live components may result in an electric
shock. This may result in serious or fatal injury to the user.
â–º Ensure that the extension cable and its mains plug are
undamaged.
â–º Ensure that your hands are dry when touching the
extension cable and its mains plug.
â–º Insert the mains plug of the extension cable into a
correctly installed and fused socket with an earth
contact.
â–º Connect the lawn scarifier using a residual current
device (30 mA, 30 ms).
If the extension cable is damaged:
â–º Do not touch damaged areas.
â–º Remove the mains plug from the socket.

ï¿­ A damaged or unsuitable extension cable may result in an
electric shock. This may result in serous or fatal injury to
people.
â–º Use an extension cable with the correct cable cross
section, @ 19.3.
â–º Use a splash-proof extension cable approved for
outdoor use.
WARNING
ï¿­ An incorrect mains voltage or an incorrect mains
frequency while working may lead to overvoltage in the
lawn scarifier. This may result in damage to the lawn
scarifier.
â–º Ensure that the mains voltage and the mains frequency
of the power supply correspond to the information
contained in the rating plate on the lawn scarifier.
ï¿­ If several electrical appliances are connected to a multi-
socket, electrical components can become overloaded
while working. The electrical components may heat up
and cause a fire. This may result in serious or fatal injury
to people and damage to property.
â–º Only connect one lawn scarifier to a socket.
â–º Do not connect a lawn scarifier to multiple sockets.
ï¿­ An incorrectly routed extension cable may be damaged
and people may trip over it. This may result in injury to
people and damage to the extension cable.
â–º Route the extension cable so that it cannot touch the
lawn scarifier.
â–º Route and mark the extension cable so that people
cannot trip over it.
â–º Route the extension cable so that it is not stretched or
tangled.
â–º Route the extension cable so that it does not become
damaged, kinked or crushed or chafe.
â–º Protect the extension cable from heat, oil and
chemicals.
â–º Route the extension cable on dry ground.
ï¿­ The extension cable warms up while working. If the heat
cannot dissipate, it may cause a fire.
â–º If using a cable reel: uncoil the cable reel fully.
4.8 Working
WARNING
ï¿­ In certain situations, the user may no longer be able to
concentrate on their work. This may result in the user
stumbling, falling and becoming seriously injured.
â–º Work calmly and carefully.
â–º If the light and visibility conditions are poor: do not use
the lawn scarifier.
â–º Operate the lawn scarifier alone.
â–º Watch out for obstacles.
â–º Do not tilt the lawn scarifier.
â–º Work standing on the ground and maintain balance.
â–º If signs of fatigue occur: take a break.
â–º If scarifying or combing on a slope: scarify or comb
across the slope.
â–º Do not scarify or comb on steep slopes.
ï¿­ The turning roller may cut the user. This may result in
serious injury to the user.
ï¿­ If the roller is blocked by an object: switch the lawn
scarifier off and detach the extension cable connector
from the mains plug of the lawn scarifier. Only then
remove the object.
â–º Do not touch a turning roller.

ï¿­ If the lawn scarifier changes or starts to behave differently
when working, it may not be in safe condition. This may
result in serious injury to people and damage to property.
â–º Finish working, switch the lawn scarifier off, detach the
extension cable connector from the mains plug of the
lawn scarifier and consult a STIHL specialist dealer.
ï¿­ The lawn scarifier may cause vibrations when working.
â–º Wear gloves.
â–º Take breaks.
â–º If signs of a circulatory disturbance occur: consult a
doctor.
ï¿­ If the roller hits a foreign object when working, the roller or
parts of it may be thrown up at high velocity. This may
result in injury to people and damage to property.
â–º Remove foreign objects from the work area.
â–º Mark and bypass obstacles (e.g. roots, tree trunks).
ï¿­ When the control bar is released, the roller continues to
turn for a short time. This may result in serious injury to
people.
â–º Wait until the roller is no longer turning.
ï¿­ Sparks can be produced if the turning roller hits a hard
object. Sparks may cause fires in highly flammable
environments. This may result in serious or fatal injury to
people and damage to property.
â–º Do not work in a highly flammable environment.
DANGER
ï¿­ If working near live wires, the roller may come into contact
with live wires and damage them. This may result in
serious or fatal injury to the user.
ï¿­ The user may be struck by lighting if working during a
thunderstorm. This may result in serious or fatal injury to
the user.
â–º Do not work during thunderstorms.
4.9 Transporting
WARNING
ï¿­ The lawn scarifier may tip over or move during transport.
This may result in injury to people and damage to
property.
â–º Switch the lawn scarifier off and detach the extension
cable connector from the mains plug of the lawn
scarifier.
â–º Wait until the roller is no longer turning.
â–º Place the lawn scarifier on a level surface.
â–º Set the transport position.
â–º Carry the lawn scarifier over obstacles (e.g. steps,
kerbs).
â–º Secure the lawn scarifier with lashing straps, belts or a
net so that it cannot tip over and move.
4.10 Storing
WARNING
ï¿­ Children cannot recognise or evaluate the dangers posed
by the lawn scarifier. There is a risk of serious injury to
children.
â–º Unplug the mains plug of the extension cable from the
socket.
â–º Detach the extension cable connector from the mains
plug of the lawn scarifier.
â–º Keep the lawn scarifier out of reach of children.
â–º Do not work near live wires.
â–º Route the extension cable so that it is easily
visible and always behind the lawn scarifier.

5 Preparing the Lawn Scarifier for Operation
ï¿­ Moisture may cause corrosion to the electric contacts on
the lawn scarifier and metal components. This may result
in damage to the lawn scarifier.
â–º Unplug the mains plug of the extension cable from the
socket.
â–º Detach the extension cable connector from the mains
plug of the lawn scarifier.
â–º Keep the lawn scarifier clean and dry.
4.11 Cleaning, Maintenance and Repair
WARNING
ï¿­ If the mains plug is plugged into a socket during cleaning,
maintenance or repair, the lawn scarifier may
unintentionally be switched on. This may result in serious
injury to people and damage to property.
â–º Detach the extension cable connector from the mains
plug of the lawn scarifier.
â–º Wait until the roller is no longer turning.
ï¿­ Abrasive cleaning agents, using a water jet for cleaning or
sharp objects may result in damage to the lawn scarifier or
the rollers. If the lawn scarifier or rollers are not cleaned
correctly, components may no longer operate correctly

5.1 Preparing the Lawn Scarifier for Operation
The following steps must be performed before commencing
work:
â–º Make sure that the following components are in safe
condition:
– Lawn scarifier, @ 4.6.1.
– Rollers, @ 4.6.2.
â–º Assemble the handlebar.
â–º Clean the lawn scarifier, @ 15.1.
â–º Check the rollers, @ 10.2.
â–º Ensure that there is no roller in the transport compartment,
@ 6.2.
â–º Fold up and adjust the handlebar, @ 7.1.
â–º Connect the mains plug of the lawn scarifier to an
extension cable and the mains plug of the extension cable
to an easily accessible socket.
â–º If material removed from the lawn is to be collected in the
grass catcher box: attach the grass catcher box, @ 6.3.2.
â–º If material removed from the lawn is to be ejected to the
rear: detach the grass catcher box, @ 6.3.3.
â–º Set the working depth, @ 11.2.
â–º Check the controls, @ 10.1.

Scarifying with the scarifying roller
Scarifying involves scratching the turf to remove weeds,
moss, old clippings and lawn thatch.
â–º Set the working depth.
â–º Place the roller in the highest position before starting.
â–º Slowly lower the roller so it is just scratching the ground.
The ideal scarifying depth is between 2 to 3 mm.
The grass roots are not damaged.
â–º Ensure that the extension cable is routed in such a way
that it is visible and always behind the lawn scarifier.
â–º Push the lawn scarifier forwards slowly and in a controlled
manner.
â–º Avoid staying stationary in one place for any duration.
Combing with the combing roller
Combing involves carefully removing lawn thatch and
excess moss previously loosened by scarifying from the
lawn.
In addition, it counteracts soil compaction and the resulting
lack of oxygen in the soil.
â–º Set the working depth.
â–º Place the roller in the highest position before starting.
â–º Slowly lower the roller until the spring-tines touch the
ground.
â–º Ensure that the extension cable is routed in such a way
that it is visible and always behind the lawn scarifier.
â–º Push the lawn scarifier forwards slowly and in a controlled
