Attaching or detaching the speakers
Use of batteries
The remote control (included)
Align the speaker with the main unit as shown in the figure below,
interlock the grooves and press down.
Attaching the speakers
Unlock the speaker release levers by pulling them in the direction
shown above, and then slide each speaker up.
If irregular coloring occurs on your television
These speakers are designed to be used close to a television, but the
picture may be affected with some televisions and set-up
combinations.
If this occurs, turn the television off for about 30 minutes.
The televisions demagnetizing function should correct the problem. If
it persists, move the speakers further away from the television.
Use only the supplied speakers.
The main unit and speakers supplied provide the best possible sound
quality. Using other speakers can damage the unit and sound quality
will be negatively affected.

Wash thoroughly with water if electrolyte comes in contact with any
part of your body.
Remove batteries if you do not plan to use the unit or the remote
control for long period of time. Store them in a cool, dark place.

CDs. These CDs allow playback of both
video pictures and sound, however are
not equipped with PBC .
Equipped with PBC , these CDs allow
playback of menus on the TV screen as
well as high resolution still pictures.
You can use functions described for
video CD version 1.1 by turning PBC off
(see page 7).

SELECT] on the remote control to play.
CD starts playing.
The track number and its elapsed playing time are shown.
To start from a selected track, press the numbered buttons on
the remote control.
Play starts from the selected track.
To select 19, press the corresponding numbered button.
To select a two-digit number, press [ 10], and then the two
numbers you want.
For example:
Track 10 : [ 10] [1] [0]
Track 25 : [ 10] [2] [5]
The menu screen appears on the TV (with some discs, it may not
appear immediately). The actual menu screen that appears may
differ depending on the disc. Some discs may display the menu
screen after animated or still screens have been played.
On the PBC screen you can also select a menu item by using [
MENU] or [MENU +] and then pressing [ SELECT, PLAY] on
the main unit or [ SELECT] on the remote control. Use the
numbered buttons on the remote control to make this selection.
High-precision still screens are also automatically recognized
and played.

PBC (Playback control)
PBC is a signal recorded on version 2.0 CDs that enables you to
control playback. It increases video enjoyment by allowing you to
interact with the system via menus, search functions and other typical
computer-style interfaces.
Use discs that display the logo mark indicated above, or conform to
the Compact Disc Digital Audio (CD-DA) standard. The disc may
not play properly if it does not confirm to this standard.
Do not:
use irregularly shaped CDs.
attach extra labels and stickers.
use CDs with labels and stickers
that are coming off or with
adhesive exuding from under
labels and stickers.
attach scratch proof covers or
any other kind of accessory.
write anything on the CD.
clean CDs with liquids. (Wipe
with a soft, dry cloth.)
use CDs printed with label
printers available on the market.
Preparation:
Set [SELECTOR] to CD on the main unit.
The unit comes on.
Turn the television on, select video input with the television input
switch.
You can use menus displayed on the TV screen to control playback
when running interactive software.

This unit can play CD-DA (digital audio), MP3 and video CD format CD-R
and CD-RW that have been finalized (a process that enables players to
play CD-R and CD-RW) upon completion of recording.
It may not be able to play some CD-R or CD-RW due to the condition of the
recording.
Finalizing is a process that enables CD-R/CD-RW players to play audio
CD-R and CD-RW.

Do not press [ CD OPEN/CLOSE] during play, pause or
immediately after you have inserted the CD or closed the CD lid.
The CD may get scratched.

The slow motion advance speed decreases up to 3 steps.
When a video CD is being played using the on-screen menus audio
may not be output while searching.
When a video CD is played as a slide show (continuous changing of
still screens) using the on-screen menus, fast-forwarding or
rewinding of the CD may not be possible.
During RANDOM mode ( page 8), you cannot skip to tracks
already played.
During PROGRAM play or RANDOM mode ( page 8) you can
search only within the track.

This function allows you to resume CD playback ( page 6) from the
point it was stopped at.
Press [RESUME] in the stop mode.
Resume will not work if the CD lid is opened and during PROGRAM
or RANDOM modes.

(1-REPEAT)
: Repeatedly plays all tracks on the disc.
(ALL-REPEAT)
RANDOM : Plays all the tracks on the disc in random
order.
RANDOM : Repeatedly plays all the tracks on the disc in
random order. (RANDOM REPEAT)
off (no indication) : Plays all tracks on the disc.
For MP3: RANDOM and RANDOM REPEAT modes are not
possible.
(The original display or screen returns after about 2 seconds.)
Proceed to step 2 if you selected 1-REPEAT in step 1.
Proceed to steps 3 and 4 if you selected 1-REPEAT in step1.

Select the track with the numbered buttons.
To select a track 10 or over, press [ 10] then the two numbers.
Play starts from the selected track.

You can program up to 24 tracks.

Proceed to steps 3, 4 and 5.

Select the tracks with the numbered buttons.
To select track 10 or over, press [ 10] then the two numbers.
Repeat step 2 to program other tracks.

An album list appears.
Press [ ALBUM] or [ALBUM ] to select an album
and press [ENTER].

Press [ PREV] or [ NEXT] to select a track and
press [ENTER].
Repeat this step to program other tracks.
To program from another album
Press [ ], and then repeat the steps 3 and 4.

Press [ SELECT] to start play.
To exit program mode
Press [PROGRAM] in the stop mode. (You can replay your
programmed tracks by pressing [PROGRAM] and [ SELECT].)
To cancel
Press [ PBC/CLEAR] in the stop mode while PGM is displayed.
CLEAR will now be displayed.
Open the CD lid to cancel this mode.
To check program contents
Press [ PREV] or [ NEXT] in the stop mode while PGM is
displayed.
Every time you press the button, the track number and program order
are displayed.
To add to the program
Repeat steps 2 - 4 while checking program contents.
You cannot program CD-DA tracks together with MP3 tracks.
Cd FULL appears when over 24 tracks are programmed.

While a disc is playing, if you specify a start point (point A) and an
end point (point B), that segment will be repeated.

Press [A-B REP] at the start point (point A).

Press [A-B REP] at the end point (point B).
The segment between A and B is played repeatedly.
To cancel A-B repeat
Press [A-B REP] during the A-B repeat playback.
For your reference
A-B repeat can only be done with the same track.
A-B repeat is not possible with video CD when the time difference
between A and B is less than 2 seconds.
A-B repeat is not possible during PROGRAM mode.
During A-B repeat, TIME ACCESS cannot be used.

Remote control only
You can locate the particular screen in a track that you want to watch
by selecting the video index number.
Check the users manual or other material such as the CD Jacket for
information on whether your video CD software contains video index
numbers.
Press [ V-INDEX] or [ V-INDEX] in the play mode to
select the video index number.
Play starts at the video index selected.
With some discs, it may not be possible to make a video index search
with motion picture.

There are two multi-screen modes:
DISC MULTI-SCREEN and TRACK MULTI-SCREEN.
Preparation:
Make sure OSD is on ( page 7).
This function divides the screen up into several parts and displays the
picture from each of the tracks. You can select the track you want
from the various pictures on the screen.

(While playback is stopped)
Press [MULTI SCREEN].
Track 1 will be played for a few seconds, then displayed as a still
picture. This will then be repeated for subsequent tracks. Up to 9
tracks can be displayed on the screen at any given time.
To display subsequent tracks:
Press [ NEXT].
To display previous tracks:
Press [ PREV].
To cancel the multi-screen mode:
Press [ PBC/CLEAR].

Press the numbered buttons to select the desired
track number.
That track will start playing. The number of the selected track is
displayed on the units display.
For your reference:
If you press [ SELECT] or [MULTI SCREEN] while a track is being
displayed as described in step 1, that track will start playing.
You cannot use disc MULTI SCREEN in PROGRAM and RANDOM
modes.
A track is divided into 9 sections and those sections are shown on the
multi screen. Play can start from the section of your choice.

(During play)
Press [MULTI SCREEN].
The first five-second segment of the track is played, then the last
frame of this segment remains displayed on the multi screen.
To cancel the multi-screen mode:
Press [ PBC/CLEAR].

Press the numbered buttons to select the desired
section of the track.
Play begins from that section.
For your reference:
If you press [ SELECT] or [MULTI SCREEN] as a track is being
displayed, play begins from that section.
You cannot use the MULTI SCREEN function in PROGRAM and
RANDOM modes.

Multi screen functions
This function allows you to specify a time on the current track and
start play from that point.
Remote control only
Preparation: Make sure OSD is on ( page 7).

Press the numbered buttons to select the desired
track number.
That track will start playing.

The track duration appears on the TV screen.

Press the numbered buttons to enter the time of the
desired part.
Example:
22:40 : [2] [2] [4] [0]
00:25 : [0] [0] [2] [5]
Play starts from the selected time.
The time to be entered should be a portion of the current track
time. If, for example, you are playing track 2, and you enter
0:25, play begins from 25 seconds into track 2.
To cancel this function
Press [TIME ACCESS] again.

CDs
This unit can play MP3 files recorded on CD-R/RW with a computer.
Files are treated as tracks and folders as albums.
This unit can access up to 999 tracks, 195 albums and 20 sessions.
Disc format
Discs must conform to ISO9660 level 1 or 2 (except for extended
formats).
File format
MP3 files must have the extension .MP3 or .mp3.
To play in a certain order
Prefix the folder and file names with 3-digit
numbers in the order you want to play them.
For example:
001abcd.mp3, 002efgh.mp3, 003ijkl.mp3.
However, some software used for writing discs may
cause recording to occur in a different order.
MPEG Layer-3 audio decoding technology
licensed from Fraunhofer IIS and Thomson
multimedia.
When making MP3 files to play on this unit
This unit is not compatible with packet-write format.
When both MP3 and CD-DA data is recorded on the disc over a
number of sessions:
If the first session contains MP3 recordings, the unit will play from
the MP3 made in that session till the session before the first CD-
DA recordings.
If the first session contains CD-DA recordings, the unit will play
only the recordings made in that session. The subsequent
sessions will be ignored.
Maximum number of displayable characters:
Album/track title: 21
ID3 title/artist name: 24
Text data that the unit doesnt support cannot be displayed.
(ID3 is a tag embedded in MP3 track to provide information about
the track.)
You cannot use RANDOM and RANDOM REPEAT modes, search
function, and TIME ACCESS function.
Some MP3 may not be played due to the condition of the disc or
recording.
Recordings will not necessarily be played in the order you recorded
them.

The radio Tapes
To improve reception
FM: Raise and extend the whip antenna.
If stereo reception is poor, set [EDIT/FM MODE/BP] to MONO.
MW:Turn the unit to face the direction with the best reception.
SW:Raise and extend the whip antenna and keep it vertical
(SW1: also turn the unit to face the direction with the best
reception).
Reference:
Radio broadcasts may be hard to receive in a moving vehicle or
building because their signals are weak. Whenever possible, use the
unit by a window.
For short-wave broadcasts (SW1, SW2), tune to the approximate
frequency with [TUNING], and then use [FINE TUNING] control for
more precise tuning.
When using [TUNING], be sure to set [FINE TUNING] control pointer
to the center position.

Tapes exceeding 100 minutes are thin and can break or get caught
in the mechanism.
Tape slack can get caught up in the mechanism and should be
tightened before playing the tape.
Endless tapes can get caught up in the mechanism if used
incorrectly.

To stop play
Press [ STOP/EJECT].
To pause play
Press [ PAUSE].
Press again to resume play.
To fast-forward or rewind (while stopped)
Press [ REW/REV] or [ FF/CUE].

To play relay (DECK 2 to DECK 1)
When DECK 2 play has finished, DECK 1 play starts automatically.
Insert the tapes into DECK 1 and DECK 2.

Press DECK 1 [ PAUSE], then press [ PLAY].
Caution
Sound quality may be effected and the cassette tape may become
stuck if you do not adhere to the following.
Do not use stickers not included with the cassette tape.
Place stickers on the cassette tape only as indicated.

discs or other published or broadcast material may infringe

Recording stops and the buttons are released when the end of the
tape is reached. (DECK1)
To stop recording
Press [ STOP/EJECT].
To pause recording
Press DECK 1 [ PAUSE].
To resume recording, press DECK 1 [ PAUSE] again.
If the tape finishes before the CD
The CD continues playing. Press [ PBC/CLEAR, STOP] to stop it.
To record on the other side of the cassette
Turn the cassette over and press [ REC].

Common Problems
No sound.
Turn the volume up.
The speaker connections may have shorted. Turn the unit off, check and correct the connections and
then turn the unit on.
No operation when powered by
batteries.
Replace with new batteries.
Align the

polarities properly when inserting the batteries.
Disconnect the AC power cord when powered by batteries.
Listening to the radio
Noise is heard.
Sound is distorted.
Change the position of the antenna or the unit.
A beat sound is heard.
Turn the TV off or separate it from the unit.
Separate the antenna from other cables and leads.
Playing discs
The display is wrong or play
wont start.
There is a loss of picture
information or the picture is
distorted.
The disc may be upside down.
Wipe the disc.
Replace the disc if it is scratched, warped, or non-standard.
Condensation may have formed inside the unit due to a sudden change in temperature. Wait about
an hour for it to clear and try again.
The total number of tracks
displayed differs each time the
same disc is inserted.
Unusual sound is heard.
The disc may be scratched, or its data may be defective. Replace the disc.
CD-RW cannot be read.
The disc was incompletely formatted. Use the recording equipment to fully format the disc before
recording.
Picture is smaller than screen.
Picture appears too wide.
Picture appears in monochrome.
It is possible that the setting of the VIDEO SWITCH of the units rear panel does not agree with the
TV.
Set the VIDEO SWITCH on the units rear panel to the appropriate position.
Depending on the TV set used, the picture may shrink vertically and black bars may appear both at
the top and bottom of the screen. This is not an indication of malfunction.
Note
The picture of the video CD does
not appear on TV.
The video connection cable is not connected. Connect the video connection cable.
The TV is not set to video input mode. Set the TV to video input mode.
Remote control
Remote control doesnt work.
Check the batteries are inserted correctly.
Replace the batteries if they are worn.
