Introduction
The SMARTResponse™ connector for Galileo is a classroom assessment tool that connects three
SMART Response interactive response systems with Assessment Technology Incorporated’s
Galileo K-12 Online assessment system.
The Galileo K-12 Online assessment system is a fully integrated, standards-based instructional
improvement system that provides teachers access to a broad range of online modules offering rapid
and flexible access to innovative assessment, reporting, instruction and intervention tools. Galileo K-
12 Online assessments are aligned to state standards, local standards or both.
Assessment results provide immediate feedback and the ability to track student progress enabling
teachers to make informed instructional decisions.
Teachers access the Galileo K-12 Online website to choose and then assign assessments to a class
list of students. Teachers can then use the SMART Response connector for Galileo to download and
administer the assigned Galileo K-12 Online assessments to their class.
The integration of the SMART Response interactive response system with the Galileo K-12 Online
assessment system enables students to use SMART Response PE or XE clickers to answer
assessment questions. The Senteo interactive response system is no longer available for purchase
but is supported by and integrated with the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo.
As an assessment progresses, student responses are displayed on the Galileo K-12 Online website’s
Test Monitoring page. This enables teachers to monitor student responses during an assessment.
Student performance data from completed assessments is then used to generate a variety of
performance reports. Information contained in the reports enables teachers to quickly modify

classroom instruction in response to student performance during an assessment and predict student
performance in future assessments.
What you need
To use the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo you need the following:
l SMARTResponse assessment software installed on your computer (see SMART Response
assessment software requirements on page 5) and a SMARTResponse receiver connected to
your computer

Students answer questions using SMARTResponse clickers (see Selecting how
students answer questions on page 6 for more information on which
SMARTResponse clickers are supported by the SMARTResponse connector for
Galileo).
o
Your choice of SMARTResponse receiver determines the maximum number of
student clickers that can be used during an assessment (see Assessment format
considerations on page 7).
o
For evaluation purposes, you can use the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo
with the SMARTResponse clicker simulator and no receiver device. However, the
clicker simulator is available only on the computer that has SMARTResponse
assessment software installed on it.

for Galileo.
Also provided is information on formatting assessments and on selecting how your students answer
assessment questions.
I I M P O R T A N T
Before you install the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo, ensure that SMARTResponse
software and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 are installed on your computer.

You must have SMARTResponse 2011 (or later) assessment software installed on your computer to
use the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo.

Installing the SMARTResponse connector for
Galileo software
Use the following procedure to download the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo software. You
can then use the installation wizard to install the software on your computer.
g To install the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo software on your computer
1. Go to smarttech.com/downloads.
2. Scroll to SMARTResponse interactive response system, and then select SMARTResponse
connector for Galileo from the drop-down menu.
3. Scroll to the Downloads section, click Download, and then follow the on-screen instructions to
download the executable file.
4. Browse to the file and double-click it.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Selecting how students answer questions
The SMARTResponse connector for Galileo enables students to answer questions using one of
these options:
l SMARTResponse PE clickers
l SMARTResponse XE clickers
l SMART Response/Senteo clickers

The Senteo interactive response system is no longer available for purchase but it is supported and
integrated with the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo.
Each model of clicker has a corresponding mode in SMARTResponse assessment software. You
can also operate the SMARTResponse system in Mixed mode, in which your class can
simultaneously use a combination of the SMARTResponse clickers listed above.
You can change the clicker operation mode after installation using the SMARTResponse Setup Tool.
See the SMARTResponse 2011 online help for information on using the SMARTResponse Setup
Tool.
Assessment format considerations
You can use the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo to select and administer Galileo K-12
Online assessments. However, the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo supports specific
question formats and has a maximum number of students who can register for an assessment. This
section provides further information on the assessment format and class size considerations that
must be made before you select a Galileo K-12 Online assessment.
Supported question formats
The SMARTResponse connector for Galileo supports multiple choice formats only. Assessment
questions can have up to four possible answers (including the correct answer). Your students use a
single clicker button, A, B, C, D or E, to submit their answers.
Assessment format and class-size considerations
The maximum number of students who can register for an assessment depends on the number of
questions in the assessment. Conversely, the maximum number of questions depends on the
number of students who register for that assessment. The ratio is as follows:

Receivers and class-size considerations
The SMARTResponse connector for Galileo supports the SMARTResponse XE and Senteo
receivers. Both types of receiver have a maximum number of clickers they can support. Therefore,
the type of receiver connected to your computer determines the maximum number of student clickers
that you can use during an assessment.

When you start the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo software, you are connecting to the
Galileo server. Connecting to the server enables you to select and administer assessments from the
Galileo K-12 Online website. During an assessment, student progress is displayed. Once you stop an
assessment, further information is available on student performance.

I I M P O R T A N T
Before starting the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo, ensure the following:
l Your SMARTResponse software is correctly configured to operate with your student
clickers (see Selecting how students answer questions on page 6).
l A SMARTResponse receiver is connected to an available USB interface on your computer.
l You have an active subscription to Galileo K-12 Online.
l Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is installed on your computer.
Starting the SMARTResponse connector for
Galileo
The following section provides information on starting the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo
and connecting to the Galileo server. Information is also provided on changing the Galileo server
address, configuring proxy settings and switching users once you’re connected to the Galileo server.
Connecting to the Galileo server
Follow the instructions below to start the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo and to connect to
the Galileo server.
g To start the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo
1. Double-click the SMART Response connector for Galileo desktop icon.
T T I P
You can also select Start > All Programs > SMART Technologies > SMARTResponse
connector for Galileo.
The Welcome dialog box appears.
2. Type your Galileo server address (see Changing the server address on the next page), user
name and password in the appropriate boxes.
3. Click Next.
The Select a Class window appears. You can now search for and select an assessment to
administer to your class.

N N O T E
When you select the Remember me on this computer check box, your user name and password
are saved. The next time you log into the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo, you go directly
to the Select a Class window.
Contact your system administrator if you don’t know your Galileo server address, user name or
password.
Changing the server address
Use the following procedure to change the Galileo server address stored in your computer.
g To change the Galileo server address
1. Double-click the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo desktop icon.
The Welcome dialog box appears.
2. Click Change Server Address.
3. Type the new server address in the Galileo server address box.
Manually configuring proxy settings
By default the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo is configured to automatically detect proxy
settings, but you can also manually configure them.
I I M P O R T A N T
Consult your system administrator before changing any SMARTResponse connector for Galileo
proxy settings.
g To manually configure proxy server settings
1. Double-click the SMART Response connector for Galileo desktop icon.
The Welcome dialog box appears.
2. Click Proxy Settings.
The Proxy Settings dialog box appears.
3. Select the Connect to Internet using a proxy check box.
4. Select Manually configure proxy settings.
5. Type the required proxy server information.

6. Click Apply.
The SMARTResponse connector for Galileo will now use your proxy settings to connect to the
Galileo server.
Switching users
Once you start the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo, you can switch users by following the
instructions below.
g To switch a user
1. Start the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo (see Connecting to the Galileo server on
page 10).
The Select a Class dialog box appears.
2. Click Switch User.
The Welcome dialog box appears.
3. Type your new user name and password.
4. Click Next.
The Select a Class window appears. You can now search for and select an assessment to
administer to your class.
N N O T E
The Remember me on this computer check box is automatically selected, so your new user name
and password are saved. The next time you log into the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo,
you will go directly to the Select a Class window.

Administering an assessment
Use the Select a Class feature to search for and select assessments from the Galileo K-12 Online
website. You can then start an assessment and begin testing your students. You can monitor your
students’ progress as they attempt assessment questions.
A print-out is available showing all the students who were listed for an assessment, their Student ID
and, if applicable, their Clicker ID.
I I M P O R T A N T
Assessments and student lists are not created using the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo.
All assessments and student lists are stored and administered from the Galileo K-12 Online
website. The assignment of assessments to specific student lists is also performed on the Galileo
K-12 Online website.
g To administer an assessment
1. Search for an assessment by selecting the School, Class and Assessment from the Select a
Class window in the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo.
2. Your students register using their SMARTResponse clickers.
3. Run the assessment and monitor your students’ progress as they attempt each question.
4. View Galileo K-12 Online reports generated from student performance data once an
assessment is completed.
5. Optionally, run more assessments with the same class of students or register a different class
of students to take assessments.
The following sections provide instruction on completing the steps listed above.
Before you start
Before administering an assessment to your students, ensure the following:
l The assessment is available on the Galileo K-12 Online website and is assigned to your
student class list.
l You have provided a copy of the assessment questions to your students.

Searching for an assessment
Use the following procedure to search for a Galileo online assessment.
I I M P O R T A N T
Ensure that all stored assessment data is current and assigned to the appropriate student list
before searching for an assessment.
g To search for an assessment
1. Start the SMARTResponse connector for Galileo (see Connecting to the Galileo server on
page 10).
The Select a Class dialog box appears.
2. Select an assessment from the School, Class and Assessment drop-down lists.
The assessment you selected appears in the Search Assessment area.
N N O T E
If you’re unable to find the assessment you want, go to the Galileo K-12 Online website to
ensure the assessment is available and assigned to your class list of students.
3. Click Next.
The Register Students dialog box appears.
Registering students
In the Register Students dialog box, you can see a list of all students who are due to take the
assessment. As students use their SMARTResponse clickers to register, a check mark appears
next to their name in the Status column. For more information on the operation of SMARTResponse
clickers, refer to the SMARTResponse 2011 online help.
I I M P O R T A N T
SMARTResponse clickers recognize numeric student IDs only. If a student list contains one or
more students with an alphanumeric ID, the SMART Response connector for Galileo generates a
corresponding list of temporary numeric student IDs. Students with an alphanumeric ID then
register with their temporary numeric ID, which appears in an additional Clicker ID column.

g To register students
1. Instruct your students to turn on their clickers, then find and connect to the class you’re
administering.
N N O T E
Only the first eight characters of a Galileo Class Name are shown on your students’
SMARTResponse clicker display.
2. Students enter either their Student ID or Clicker ID.

You can click Sign-In list to see a list of all students due to register for the
assessment and their registration status. If you click the sort by check box, you can
sort student namesby their first or last name in ascending or descending order. Click
Print to print a list of students registering.

If a student attempts to sign in using an ID that another student is already using, a
message appears indicating that he or she is unable to sign in and lets them retry.
A check mark appears in the Status column next to each student as they register.
3. Click Registration Complete to complete the registration.
The Assessment In Progress dialog box appears.
N N O T E
At least one student has to register before you start an assessment.

Running an assessment
Students use their SMARTResponse clickers to submit answers to assessment questions. For
example, your students’ clicker screens display Q1 for question 1. Your students then use their
clicker key pad to enter and submit the correct answer (A, B, C, D or E). This continues for all
questions until the assessment is complete.
The Assessment in Progress dialog box enables you to monitor your students’ progress as they
attempt assessment questions. After you stop an assessment you can see more information on
student performance.
T T I P
You can access more information on student progress and performance by clicking the Monitor
Test link (located to the right of the Assessment in Progress window, above the Students in
Progress dialog box) to open the Galileo Test Monitoring window. With this information, you can
monitor each student’s answers during the assessment.
