lbert Einstein famously said, “If you want your children to be
intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want your children to
be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” This Once
Upon a Craft™ kit is designed to provide activities to supplement
your child’s learning experience with The Ugly Duckling. Young
children thrive in environments where learning and play go hand
in hand. The included crafts will spark your child’s enthusiasm for
learning and get them excited about reading.
Read the Story
Read the story together. The inside
front cover of the book has some tips
for making the most of your read-aloud
experience. Encourage your child’s
imagination with the fun, skill-building
craft activities in this kit. For additional
hands-on activities, the inside back
cover of the book has more ways to
extend the reading fun.
Make the Mirror
Point out the part of the story where the
duckling sees his refl ection in the water.
Then, invite your child to view himself or
herself in a mirror and say what he or
she is proud of. Encourage a discussion
of characteristics that cannot be seen,
such as kindness, intelligence, being
a good friend, and so on. Then, have
your child decorate the mirror with the
stickers, a fun way to build fi ne motor
skills for handwriting success.
Color the Puzzle
Put the puzzle together. Discuss the scene
featured on the puzzle. Then, provide
markers, crayons, or another medium
for your child to color sections of the
puzzle. When he or she is fi nished, mix
up the pieces and challenge your child
to put the puzzle back together. If your
child has not had much experience with
puzzles, share some puzzle-working tips,
such as starting with corners, looking
for outer edges, putting together pieces
with the same color, and so on. Puzzles
are great for building problem-solving
and spatial reasoning skills!
