1 Introduction
This user guide describes the procedure of making a WinCan8 project ready to be sent to a
final customer (engineer office, town administration etc.) in easy to handle format.
This procedure implies the following four steps:
1. Exporting the projectdatabase as well as the media files from WinCan8.
2. Distribution of the data stuff via the software WinCan8 - MediaDistribution
3. Burning of the distributed data (via MediaDistribution or an external burning software)
4. Checking the exported data in WinCan8-Viewer
2 Minimum system requirements
The following modules must be licensed and installed on the PC, which the WinCan8 project
will be distributed on:
WinCan v8 Entry (Version 8.24.0.XXXX or higher)
The language of the project to be exported
WinCan8 MediaDistribution
WinCan8 Viewer (Version 4.X.X.XX) or higher)
3 Data transmission
3.1 Selection of the sections to be exported
Open the project to be exported in WinCan8. Select the menu command Export, WinCan
Viewer Export:
ALL the sections displayed on the section table will be distributed and exported.
If there has to be exported a group of sections only, you may set filter criteria in the current
project. Click on the symbol (1) to set the criteria you like in the filter dialogue (see docu-
mentation WinCan Replicator). Filtered sections can then be exported directly via the com-
mand WinCan Viewer Export.

3.2 Distributing data using MediaDistribution
The software WinCan8 MediaDistribution is running directly after the exporting process. Ac-
cording to the size of the WinCan8 project the amount of CDs/DVDs (1) needed is automati-
cally calculated and the files put on the corresponding media are listed as shown below (1):
Besides the distribution of the project data the software is also copying the tool WinCan8-
Viewer (3) automatically on every DVD. Click on the button and check the following
settings in the dialog box shown below:
2
1
The WinCanViewer always must be copied to
the distributed project using this path!
During the distribution of the data the media
name will automatically be written in the field
SI_MediaNumber1 AND copied into
SI_VCRNumber1.

Click on button media name settings and define another name pattern for the folder that
will finally contain the distributed data.
Confirm all the name settings with a click on the green button and you will find yourself
again in the dialogue WinCan8 Media Distribution. Also click on the green button in this win-
dow to distribute your project data directly to the hard disk (4):
First define the folder on the hard disk where the data finally should be written in (e.g.
D:\EXPORT) and confirm this entry with the green button in the Select directory panel (5):
now the distribution process is launched. Once this job is finished the MediaDistribution
software can be closed by clicking on YES in the dialogue shown below:
In case you want to provide the distributed project data on CD or DVD, you will have to
burn them afterwards.

Page 6/19
3.3 Burning data using an external program
Just burn the data using exactly the same data structure the MediaDistribution has built up
before. Neither delete any folder/file nor rename one of them nor move any file into another
folder. In case you decide not to transmit some files to a final customer, you will have to
delete these before starting the distribution software.
The Mediadistribution is creating folders with the media name defined before followed by a
serial number (e.g. DVD1, DVD2, ...).
IMPORTANT: Burn the CONTENT of the folder DVD1* on the first DVD then burn the CON-
TENT of the folder DVD2* on the second DVD etc. The data distributed on the hard disk
must be visible finally in the root directory of the DVD (as show in the graphic below!); oth-
erwise the WinCan8 Viewer will NOT start automatically after sliding in the DVD in the drive.
HINT: Always check if the data are readable after burning before you forward the DVDs to
your customer.

3.4 Burning data using the WinCan8 burning tool
Select the media type first (1) and then select the entry Write to media (2) to get the data
burnt directly on a CD or DVD:
Check again the program settings via the button and launch the WinCan8 burning tool
with a click on the green button (3):
Click on the button Burn to start the burning process. If necessary you will AUTOMATICALLY
be asked to slide in a new media (6). Close the default WINDOWS message (4) by clicking
on the Close button (5): the burning process will be launched or resumed.
IMPORTANT: Always wait until the software is telling you that the burning process has fin-
ished completely!

5 Launching WinCan VIEWER
The WinCan VIEWER can be launched in two ways:
AUTOMATICALLY: The software WinCanViewer starts directly after sliding in a CD/DVD in
an optical drive. This so called AUTORUN function is activated per default on most of the
computers.
MANUALLY: If the AUTORUN function is deactivated you will have to double click on the
file WinCanViewer.exe on the CD/DVD to launch the software. To do so double click on
the icon My Computer on your desktop and then select the DVD icon:
Double click on the file WinCanViewer.exe to run the software
IMPORTANT:
WinCan VIEWER cannot run more than once at the same time on the same computer.
6 WinCan VIEWER projects
The project data distributed before by the MediaDistribution are automatically available in a
virtual WinCan8 interface after sliding the Viewer DVD into the drive. The access to the pro-
ject data as well as navigating in such a Viewer project is done in the same way as in Win-
Can8:

Large projects may be spread over several CDs or DVDs and therefore the data stuff must
have been split too. In the column Media you will be shown which disk the data are stored
on. If you try to display a picture or a videoclip of a section that cannot be found on the cur-
rent CD/DVD you will be asked to slide in the corresponding disk (1).
13 Printing projects
Projects can be printed in 2 ways from the WinCan8-VIEWER interface:
Printing of inspection reports saved as PDF files in WinCan8 before: these PDF files must
be put in a subfolder PDF of the current WinCan8 project. After the media distributing
process you will be able to open directly these PDF files via the button PDF (2) on the
VIEWER interface. An integrated PDF reading software makes reading and printing the
reports even more easy.

Page 15/19
14 ScanExplorer functionalities
14.1 What is ScanExplorer?
Mind the graphic shown below for a better understanding of the basic functionalities of this
technology. Scanner applications, like DigiSewer, RPP oder Panoramo are performing so cal-
led side scans of the inner surface of an inspected pipe. The original 3D-aspect of this sur-
face is then folded down to a 2D layer appearing in a way as if the pipe had been cut before
at its top (12 o'clock) or its bottom (6 o'clock):
Graphic: Unfolding process of the inner pipe surface and creation of a 2D image.
This technology enables you to display the whole inner pipe surface as one big picture layed
in several stripes (1). A further advantage compared with a default video inspection consists
in measuring real distances and surfaces directly on the pipe surface. The aspect of the un-
folded inner pipe surface is a bit unusual at the first glimpse but the software module on the
other hand is a very efficient tool to quickly and precisely judge the general state of pipe.

this icon to get

WinCan Video Player
Page 16/19
15 WinCan Video Player
In the new versions of WinCan8 (version 8.18.0.XXXX or higher) and WinCan VIEWER a new
customizable video player component is built in. The advantages of this new WinCan Video
Player are listed below:
High quality displaying of all the videoclips recorded in WinCan8
Integrated decoder component especially licensed for MPEG video displaying
Support of the whole range of MPEG formats: from MPEG-1 up to MPEG-4 AVC applied in
HD-TV environments.
No installation or administrator rights needed.
No influence on other video player functionalities installed before.
Included and ready for use on every WinCan Viewer CD/DVD.
15.1 Licensing the WinCan Video Player
A license fee for the use of the formats MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and MPEG-AVC must be payed to
the corresponding patents owner (www.mpegla.com) by CDLab as a software manufacturer.
Every WinCan VIEWER project contains a copy of the WinCan Video Player whose license is
limited to 30 days.
If the final customer doesn't indicate a valid license key after this period, the WinCan Video
Player will display the video clips with a white pixel pattern in the center of the image.
15.1.1 Reading the license file
Open WinCan VIEWER project
Select the menu Settings, Video Player Settings
The following dialogue will appear:
The button Add License allows you to enter the license key either manually (1) or to indicate
the path of a valid license file (txt-format) (2) previously copied to the hard disk. The licens-
ing is terminated when clicking on the green button (3). A small message finally confirms
that the whole process has been done successfully.
Valid license files can be ordered by e-mail (sales@wincan.com) oder by phone call (CD Lab
AG, 0041-026 672 37 37).

15.2 Activating the Basic Video Player
The basic video player (Microsoft Windows Media Player 11) doesn't require any license and
can be activated at any time. To do this click on the green button at the right side of the
section Basic Video Player in the Video player settings dialogue (1).
IMPORTANT: If you do NOT want to buy a license for the WinCan Video Player and prefer to
use explicitely the Basic Video Player to display the video clips in WinCan Viewer you will
NEVER have a warrantee, that videos recorded in MPEG2- or MPEG4-format can be dis-
played without any problems on the target PC.
In such a case you will have to install the required CODECS yourself.

The 1
st
line of the file Drive.INI in the folder C:\Program Files\WinCan
v8\WinCan\WinCanViewer\Viewer must contain the same drive letter (page 20):
START parameter /S:[search criterion]
Example:
"C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\WinCanViewer\Viewer\WincanViewer.exe"
/S:10
… launches WinCanVIEWER and lists
all the projects in the folder
G:\...\Projects_Standard
WinCan Video Player
Page 19/19
… launches WinCanVIEWER and shows the first section of the project in the drive E with the
value 10 in the target field S_StartNode (written in the 3
rd
line of the file Drive.INI):
START parameter /mdb/sectionname=[name]; (WITH a semicolon!)
Example:
"C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\WinCanViewer\Viewer\WincanViewer.exe"
/mdb/sectionname=NY_PA5;
… launches WinCanVIEWER and looks for a section named NY_PA5 in different databases.
16.2 Using combinations of START parameters
START parameter /P:[path] /mdb/sectionname=[name]; (with a semicolon!)
Example:
"C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\WinCanViewer\Viewer\WincanViewer.exe"
/P:G:\WinCan_Projects\V8\Projects_Standard /mdb/sectionname=NY_PA5;
… launches WinCanVIEWER, jumps to the main folder G:\...\Projects_Standard and
opens the first project containing the section named NY_PA5:
START parameter /N:[media] /mdb/projectname=[name]; (WITH a semicolon!)
Example:
"C:\Program Files\WinCan v8\WinCan\WinCanViewer\Viewer\WincanViewer.exe"
/N:010208_1 /mdb/projectname=DEMO_US_PACP;
… launches WinCanVIEWER and tells you to slide in the DVD named 010208_1 storing the
project DEMO_US_PACP.
