1-1. GENERAL INFORMATION AND SAFETY
A. General
Information presented in this manual and on various la-
bels, tags, and plates on the unit pertains to equipment
design, installation, operation, maintenance, and
troubleshooting which should be read, understood, and
followed for the safe and effective use of this equipment.
B. Safety
The installation, operation, maintenance, and trouble-
shooting of arc welding equipment requires practices
and procedures which ensure personal safety and the
safety of others. Therefore, this equipment is to be in-
stalled, operated, and maintained only by qualified
persons in accordance with this manual and all applica-
ble codes such as, but not limited to, those listed at the
end of Section 1 – Safety Rules For Operation Of Arc

1-2. SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL AND SIGNAL
WORDS
The following safety alert symbol and signal words are
used throughout this manual to call attention to and
identify different levels of hazard and special instruc-
tions.
This safety alert symbol is used with the signal
words WARNING and CAUTION to call atten-
tion to the safety statements.
WARNING statements identify procedures or
practices which must be followed to avoid seri-
ous personal injury or loss of life.
CAUTION statements identify procedures or
practices which must be followed to avoid minor
personal injury or damage to this equipment.
IMPORTANT statements identify special instructions
necessary for the most efficient operation of this equip-
ment.
1-3. DESCRIPTION
The cross slide design provides horizontal or vertical
movement of welding equipment. Two cross slides may
be installed to provide X-Y (both horizontal and vertical)
movement of welding equipment.
Cross slide mounted equipment must be within the lim-
its of the loading curve shown in Chart 1-1.
SECTION 2 INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE
WARNING: ELECTRIC SHOCK can kill.
Do not touch live electrical parts.
Shut down wire feeder system and
welding power source, and disconnect
input power employing lockout/tagging
procedures before inspecting, installing,
or servicing.
Lockout/tagging procedures consist of pad-
locking line disconnect switch in open posi-
tion, removing fuses from fuse box, or shut-
ting off and red-tagging circuit breaker or oth-
er disconnecting device.
2-1. INSTALLATION (Figure 3-1)
WARNING: Read and follow safety infor-
mation at beginning of entire Section 2
before proceeding.
CAUTION: WELD SPATTER, DIRT, AND
DUST can affect cross slide operation.
Mount cross slide where it will be least
subjected to weld spatter, dirt, and dust.
IMPORTANT: The 4-1/4 in. (108 mm) square mounting
hole pattern in the cross slide bottom pan and carrier
plate permits mounting one cross slide on top of another
to provide X-Y movement
1. Turn crank handle to move carrier plate and ex-
pose two mounting holes in bottom pan. Install
supplied 3/8-16 x 1-1/4 cap screws and lock
washers.
2. Turn crank handle to move carrier plate in oppo-
site direction and expose two remaining
mounting holes in bottom pan. Install supplied
3/8-16 x 1-1/4 cap screws and lock washers.
3. Install welding equipment on carrier plate using
customer supplied 3/8-16 cap screws. Mounting
screws should not interfere with carrier travel.
2-2. SHAFT TENSION ADJUSTMENT (Figure 3-1)
WARNING: Read and follow safety infor-
mation at beginning of entire Section 2
before proceeding.
The cross slide has been factory set to require 12 in.-lb.
(82.7 kPa) torque to turn the crank handle and should
not require further adjustment. If the cross slide compo-
nents work loose and the handle turns too freely,
readjust as follows:
1. Remove all equipment mounted to the carrier
plate.
2. Loosen cone point set screw. Tighten screw drive
nut on the drive screw until sufficient drag is felt
while turning crank handle.
3. Tighten set screw on the screw drive nut.
4. Install equipment removed in Step 1.
2-3. CLEANING AND LUBRICATION (Figure 3-1)
WARNING: Read and follow safety infor-
mation at beginning of entire Section 2
before proceeding.
Every six months clean and apply a light lubricant, such
as SAE 20 oil, to the drive screw and the slide bars (see
Figure 3-1, items 4, 10 and 11).
