sult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.

16. Damage Requiring Service - The appliance should be serviced

17. Tilt/Stabillty - All televisions must comply with recommended
irrternational global safety standards for tilt arrd stability properties
of its cabinet design.
• Do not compromise these design standards by applying exces-
sive pull force to the front, or top, of flae cabinet which could ulti-
mately overturn the product.
• Also, do not endanger yourself, or children, by placing electron-
ic equipment/toys on tile top of the cabinet. Such items could
unsuspectingly fall from tile top of tire set arrd cause product dam-
age arrd/or personal irrjury.
18. Wall or Ceiling Mounting - The appliance should be mounted to
a wall or ceiling only as recommeuded by the manufacturer.
19. Power Lines - An outdoor arrtenna should be located away tkom
power lines.
20. Outdoor Antenna Grounding - If an outside arrtenna is conuect-
ed to flae receiver, be sure flae arrtenna system is grounded so as to
provide some protection against voltage surges arrd built up static
charges.
Section 810 of the National Electric Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 70-
1984, provides irrformation with respect to proper grounding of
flae mast arrd supporting structure, grounding of tile lead-in wire to
an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding conuectors, location
of arrtenna-discharge unit, conuectiou to grounding electrodes, arrd
requirements for the grounding electrode. See Figure below'.
21. Object and Liquid Entry - Care should be taken so that objects
do not fall arrd liquids are not spilled irrto the enclosure through
openings.
22. Battery Usage CAUTION - To prevent battery leakage that may
result in bodily irrjury, property damage, or damage to the unit:
• Install all batteries correctly, with + arrd - aligned as marked on
the unit.
• Do not mix batteries (old and new or carbon arrd alkaline, etc.).
• Remove batteries when the unit is not used for a long time.
Note to the CATV system installer: This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installer's attention to Article 820-40 of the NEC
that provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the
building, as close to the point of cable entry as practical.

Here are a few of the features built into your new Television:
QuadraSurf TM A remote control feature that allows you to
store and view up to ten of your favorite charnels per button (4
buttons - 40 channels total). Can be set to hold movie, sports,
news chmmels, etc., or add tile audio/video channels for a quick
source function to swap between your external accessory
devices.
AutoLock TM feature allows you to block tile viewing of cer-
tain chtmnels or external audio/video connections where you
might not wtmt your children viewing inappropriate material.
Infrared Remote Control works your TV set, and allows
you to program certain features with the press of one button.
Standard broadcast (VHFIUHF) or Cable TV (CATV)
chamlel capability with stereo sound.
Closed Captioning allows tile viewer to read TV program
dialogue or voice conversations as on-screen text.
Automatic Programming of Channels for quick and easy
selection of favorite stations available in your area.
On-screen Features (ill either English or Spanish) show
helpful messages for setting of TV controls.
Audio/Video Jackpanel located on tile back of tile television
for direct connections when using audio/video accessory
devices. These Jacks ctm provide improved quality TV picture
and sound playback.
Expand 4:3 will allow you to expand tile "letterbox" image
produced by certain DVD players to fill tile entire TV screen.
Sleeptimer automatically rams tile TV OFF at preset times.
AutoPicture TM allows you to set tile picture color, tint, con-
trast, etc. for various types of programming such as Sports,
Movies, Personal, Weak Signals or Multi Media with tile push
of one button.
AutoSound TMcontrols allow you to set tile sound controls for
various types of listening programs such as Personal (sound
controls the way you set them), Theater, Music, or Voice with
tile push of one button.
Treble Boost, Bass Boost, and Balance controls to
enhance tile television's sound.

Your new television and its packing contain materials that can
be recycled and reused. Specialized companies can recycle your
product to increase tile amount of reusable materials and mini-
mize tile amounts that need to be properly disposed.
Your product also uses batteries that should not be thrown away
when depleted, but should be hmlded in and disposed of as
small chemical waste.
When you replace your existing equipment, please find out
about tile local regulations regarding disposal of your old tele-
vision, batteries, and packing materials.

Press the POWER button to turn the
TV ON. Or to activate the TV if in
Standby Mode.
Note: You can also press zmy button on
the front of the TV to turn the TV ON.
Press the CHANNEL (P) UP or (P)
DOWN button to select TV channels.
Press the VOLUME _ button to
increase file sound level, or the VOL-
UME _ button to lower the sound
level.
Point the remote control toward the
remote sensor window on the TV when
operating the TV with the remote.
Remove the battery compartment lid
on the back of the remote.
Place the batteries (2-AA) in the
remote. Be sure the (+) and (-) ends of
the batteries line up correctly (inside of
case is marked.)
Reattach the battery lid.
HELPFUL HINT
Remember, the tuned channel number will
always briefly appear when the TV is first
turned ON (and with channel changes.)
You can also press the STATUS/EXIT but-
ton (on the remote) to see what chmmel the
TV is ON.

OUADRA SURF Buttons
(Red, Green, Yellow, Blue) Allows you to
store _md surf up to 10 channels you
choose for each colored button.
AV Button - Press to select an accessor
signal input from the front AV Inputs.
SMILEY Button - Press to add chzumels
_ _turt" lists. Works with all "
colored buttons.
CC Button - Press to activate the Closed
Captioning options. Repeatedly press tile
CC button will scroll tile options available
on tile TV screen.
AUTO SOUND Button - Press
to choose from different factory pre-defined
sound settings. Choose from Personal (how
you set tile Sound Menu options), Voice
(for programming with speaking only),
Music (for musical type programs such as
concerts), or Theatre (used when watching
movies).
MENU Button - Press to display tile on-
screen menu. Also can be used to back out
of tile on-screen menu until it disappears
from tile TV's screen.
VOL(umel + or - Buttons - Press tile
VOL + button to increase tile TV's sound
level. Press tile VOL - button to decrease
tile TV's sound level.
MUTE Button - Press tile mute button to
eliminate tile sound being heard from tile
TV. "MUTE" will be displayed on the
TV's screen. Press again to restore the
TV's volume to it's previous level.
SLEEP Button - Press tile Sleep button to
set tile TV to automatically turn itself off
after a set period of time. Press repeatedly
to select 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 180, or
240 minutes.

delete stored chzmuels within tile
"Quadm SurF' lists for tile colored but-

AUTO PICTURE Button - Press
repeatedly to choose from 5 different fac-
tory pre-defined picture settings. Choose
from Personal (how you set tile Picture
Menu adjustment controls), Movies
(when watching movies), Sports (for any
sporting event), Weak Signal (used when
tile signal being received is not tile best),
or Multi Media (for use with vkleo gam-
ing).
STATUS/EXIT Button - Press to dis-
play tile current channel number. If tile
on-screen menu is displayed, press the
Status/Exit button will remove it from
the TV's screen.
CURSOR A,V, (, or> Buttons -
Press to navigate, select and adjust con-
trols within tile on-screen menu. Also use
tile CURSOR UP or DOWN _ to acti-
w_te or deactivate tile EXPAND 4:3
screen formatting control.
CH(annel) + or - Buttons - Press to
select channels ill ascending or descend-
ing order.
NUMBERED (0-9_ Buttons - Press tile
numbered buttons to select TV ch_mnels
or to enter certain values within the on-
screen menu. For single ch_mnel entries,
press tile numbered button for tile dlan-
nel you desire, tile TV will pause for a
second or two before changing to tile
chosen ch_mnel.
NOTE: This button is dedicated to
TIMER features within certain TV mod-
els. This TV does not contain these
TIMER features, therefore tile button will
have no functionality when pressed.
A combination antenna receives normal
broadcast channels (VHF 2-13 and
UHF 14-69). Your connection is easy \\\ N
because there is only one 75_2 (ohm)
antenna plug on the back of your T_, and
that's where the antenna ,goes.
If your antenna has a round cable
(75 ohm) on the end, then you're ready
to connect it to the TV.
If your antenna has flat, twin-lead
wire (300 ohm), you first need to
attach the antenna wires to the screws
on a 300- to 75-ohm adapter.
Push the round end of the adapter (or
zmtenna) onto the 75Q (ohm) plug on
the back of the TV. If the round end of
the tmtenna wire is threaded, screw it
down finger tight.

press the CH + and - buttons to scroll the
channels.
ur Cable TV input ii_to your home may
e a single (75 ohm) cable. If so, this con-
nection is very simple. Follow the steps below
to comwet your cable signal to your new tele-
vision.

eeoder, follow the easy steps below to
complete the connection.

Connect the open end of the round
Cable Company supplied cable to the
cable signal IN(put) plug on the back
of the Cable Box.
Using a separate round coaxial cable,
connect one end to the OUT(put) (TO
TV) plug on the back of the Cable
Box.
Connect the other end of the round
coaxial cable to the 75_.2 input on the
back of the television. Screw it down
finger tight.
NOTE: Be sure to set the OUTPUT CHAN-
NEL SWITCH on the back of the cable box to
CH 3 or 4, then tune the cable box on the TV
to the corresponding channel. Once tuned,
change channels at the cable box, not the tele-
vision.
Cable Box (w/Audio/Video
Outputs):
This connection will supply Stereo sound to the
TV.

Connect the open end of the round
Cable Company supplied cable to the
cable signal IN(put) plug on the back
of the Cable Box.
Using a RCA type Video Cable, connect
one end of the cable to the Video (or
ANT, your cable box may be labeled dif-
felz)ntly) Out jack on the cable box and
the other end to the AVI Video h]put on
the TV.
Using a RCA type Audio Left and Right
Cable, connect one end to the left and
right Audio Out L & R jacks on the
cable box. Connect the other end to the
AVI Audio L & R h]put jacks on the TV.
NOTE: Use the Channel +, or - buttons on the
TV remote control to tune to the AVI channel
for the cable box signal. Once tuned, change
channels at the cable box, not the television.

that has audio/video output jacks. Both the
AV1 and AV2 bq)ut Jack connections are shown
on this page, but either one can be comwcted
ahme. Follow the easy steps below to connect
your accesso_sv deq#ce to the AV1 and AV2 in
,lacks" lo_ztted on the back of the TV.
Connect the VIDEO (yellow) cable to
tile VIDEO AVI in (or AV2 ill) jack oil
tile back of tile TV.
Connect the AUDIO (red and white)
cables to tile AUDIO (left and right)
AVI in (or AV2 ill) jacks on the rear of
the TV.
Connect the VIDEO (yellow) cable to
tile VIDEO OUT jack on file back of
tile VCR (either one or two) or acces-
sory device being used.
Connect the AUDIO (red and white)
cables to tile AUDIO (left and right)
OUT jacks oil the rear of the VCR
(either one or two) or accessory device
being used.
Turn the VCR (either one or two) or
accessory device and the TV ON.
Press the AV button oil tile remote
control to select tile AVI channel for
accessory device number one, or tile
AV2 chtmnel for accessory device
number two. AV1 or AV2 will appear
in tile upper left corner oil tile TV
screen depending oil tile ch_mnel cho-

With either of tile VCRs (or accessory
devices) ON and a prerecorded tape
(CD, DVD, etc.) inserted, press the
PLAY button to view tile tape on tile
television.
Repeatedly pressing tile AV button oil tile
remote control will toggle tile picture source
from the current chmmel, then AVI (or CVI),
AV2, SVHS, or current chmmel.
Note: The Audio/Vkleo cables needed for
this connection are not supplied with your
TV. Please contact your dealer or Philips at
800-531-0039 l_)rinformation about purchas-
ing tile needed cables.
NOTE: Repeatedly pressing tile AV button oil tile remote control will toggle tile
picture source from tile current chmmel, then tile AVI channel (or CVI channel),

f the TV can provide you with better pie-
tun, detail and clarity for the playback of
accessory soun'es such as DBS (digital
broadcast satellite), DVD (digital video
discs), video games, and S-VHS VCR (video
cassette recorder) tapes than the normal
antent_a picture connections.
NOTE: The accesso_sv device must have an
S-VIDEO OUT(put)jack in order for you to
complete the cotmection on this page.
Connect one end of the S-VIDEO
CABLE to the S-VIDEO jack on the
back of the TV.
Connect other end of the S-VIDEO
CABLE to the S-VIDEO OUT jack on
the back of the VCR.
Connect one end the AUDIO (red
and white) CABLES to the AV2 in
AUDIO L _mdR(lefl and right) jacks
on the rear of the TV.
Colmect the other ends of the AUDIO
(red trod white) CABLES to the
AUDIO (left trod right) OUT jacks on
the rear of the VCR.
Turn the VCR and the TV ON.
Press the AV button on the remote to
scroll the channels until SVHS appears
in the upper left corner of the TV
screen.
Now your ready to place a prerecorded
video tape in the VCR trod press the
PLAY I_ button.
NOTE: Repeatedly pressing the AV button on the remote control will toggle the
picture source from the current chmmel, then the AVI channel (or CVI channel),
then the AV2 channel, then the S-Video (SVHS) chalmel, then back to the current
chalmel being watched.

HELPFUL HINT
The S-VIDEO and VIDEO AV2 in(puts) are
in parallel. The S-VIDEO input is domi-
nant when in use. If separate video signals
are COlmected to the S-VIDEO mad VIDEO
AV2 in(puts), the signal from the VIDEO
AV2 in(put) will not be usable.
Note: The S-Video and Audio cables needed
for this COlmection are not supplied with
your TV. Please contact your dealer or
Philips at 800-531-0039 for ilfformation
about purchasing the needed cables.

highest possible color and picture resolu-
tion in the playback of digital signal source
material, such as with DVD players. The
color difference signals (Pb, Pr) and the lumi-
nance (Y) signal are connected and received
separately, which allows for improved color
bandwidth information (not possible when
using composite video or S-Video connec-
tions).
Connect the Component (Y, Pb, Pr)
Video OUT jacks from the DVD play-
er (or similar device) to the (Y, Pb, Pr)
in(put) jacks on the TV. When using
the Component Video Inputs, it is best
not to COlmect a signal to the AVI in
Video Jack.
Connect the red and white AUDIO
CABLES to the Audio (left and right)
output jacks on the rear of the accesso-
ry device to the Audio (L and R) AVI
in Input Jacks on the TV.
Turn the TV and the DVD (or digital
accessory device) ON.
Press the AV button or the CH +, -
buttons to scroll the available chtmnels
until CVI appears in the upper left cor-
ner of the TV screen.
Insert a DVD disc into the DVD player
and press the PLAY I_ button on the
DVD Playel:

The description for the component video
connectors may differ depending on the
DVD player or accessory digital source
equipment used (for example, Y, Pb, Pr;

he TUNER MODE control allows you to

ANTENNA, CABLE or AUTO mode. It's
important for the TV to know what type of
signal to look fo_: (From a Cable TV signal or
a normal Antem_a signaL) Its the AUTO

AutoLock TM offers various BLOCKING
controls from which to choose:
Access Code: An Access Code must be set
to prevent chiklren from unblocking ques-
tionable programming.
Channel Block: Individual channels
including the A/V inputs can be blocked.
Clear All: Allows you clear all chtmnels
being blocked from your viewing set with
the Channel Block Control.
Block All: Allows you to block ALL chan-
nels and A/V inputs at one time.
Movie Ratings: Block programming
based on ratings patterned by the Motion
Pictures Association of America.
TV Ratings: Block programming based
on sttmdard TV ratings set by TV broad-
casters.

Ratings and the TV Ratings, refer to the
definitions listed on the columns to the
right.
