MANUFACTURE
Quality control is a crucial element of the tire manufacturing process. Unless products are care-
fully inspected, defects may go undetected and give rise to customer complaints. These gene-
rate high costs and invariably cause signicant damage to the tire manufacturer‘s reputation. In
developing its IRIS-M system, SICK‘s goal was to optimize the quality control process and permit
the cost-effective inspection of each individual tire.
From the raw materials through to the nished product, tire
manufacture comprises more than a hundred operations and
involves a range of different components. The more aspects
of this complex production process that can be monitored,
the better the guarantee of a top-quality end product.
In the past, the quality checks have usually been performed
by the machine operator. Manual inspections are not only
time-consuming; they also cannot provide the reliability and
precision that are the hallmark of modern machine vision
systems. The use of this type of system makes tire quality
assurance vastly more reliable. Unlike in the case of manual
inspections, no defective tires go undetected.
Despite this, conventional vision systems suffer from the
drawback that they nd it difcult to distinguish between
reections and the features that are to be detected. When it
comes to quality control in the tire manufacturing industry,
however, a solution is needed that delivers reliable results
despite the presence of reections or dirt on the tires.
The IRIS-M system was specially developed to meet this de-
manding challenge. It processes both 3D and color informa-
tion. On the one hand, this makes it possible to differentiate
reliably between the markers on the basis of their color. On
the other, the 3D technology dependably protects the applica-
tion against incorrect acceptability classications. It makes it
possible to delimit the area in which the system searches for
markers in such a way that dirt or detached markers on the
conveyor are ignored.

DESCRIPTION OF THE
APPLICATION
Both painted markers and glued markers are used during the tire manufacturing process. These
act as guides when mounting the tire on the wheel rim and must therefore be clearly visible.
Painted markers indicate the external side of the tire. They are applied during the nal stage of the manufacturing process and
may be severely damaged when the tire is processed in the curing press. Glued markers make it possible to mount the tire
on the wheel rim in such a way that the valve compensates for the imbalance of the tire. When the tires are transported along
roller conveyors, these markers may become partially or completely detached.
Damaged or missing markers mean that the tire cannot subsequently be mounted correctly. The use of the quality control sys-
tem permits the reliable detection and validation of these markers. This comprehensive solution is scalable and can therefore
be integrated seamlessly into the production process where it permits one hundred percent inspection coverage coupled with
high throughput rates.

The IRIS-M system excels through its reliability and high availability. All the components are
precalibrated and can be replaced quickly and easily. Thanks to its modular design and pionee-
ring maintenance concept, the system can be commissioned quickly and without any specialist
knowledge of vision systems.

High availability
To meet the demanding requirements concerning system
uptimes, it features comprehensive diagnostic capabi-
lities as well as a self-test function. Users are informed
immediately whenever a component has to be cleaned or
recalibrated so that maintenance work can be arranged in
good time.
User-friendly maintenance and repair concept
Malfunctioning system components such as lasers, came-
ras or illumination can be replaced true-to-conguration in
just a few minutes by trained production personnel without
recalibration. As a result, the system is up and running
again almost immediately.

Product description
The IRIS-M system is a comprehensive,
scalable solution for the detection and
validation of colored markers used
during tire manufacture. It consists of
two identical modules that are mounted
above and below the conveyor assem-
bly. Each module is equipped with a
high-end camera, two lasers and an
illumination unit.
All the system components are supplied
precalibrated. No additional on-site ad-
aptations by a vision system specialist
are required.
The system combines 2D and 3D image
acquisition technologies to permit reli-
able marker detection. The 3D function
delivers information about the position
and shape of the tire, independently of
the contrast characteristics of the back-
ground. The camera‘s color component
recognizes the color of the markers
unimpaired by light reections or the
presence of dirt on the tire surface.
