DESCRIPTION
A. B. Chance Duogap® Interrupters convert Chance Type D6, D7 switches to 600 amp loadbreak switches.
Two units are available: 7.8 - 27kV and 38kV.

(2) As the blade begins to open out of the main
contacts, the current flow is through the blade,
arc bolt, arcing horn and contact terminal for a
short time. The Duogap® is still not in the
current path at this time.
(1) With the switch blade in the closed position,
the current flow is through the blade, main con-
tacts and the contact terminal. The Duogap® is not
in the current path.
OPERATION
Shown is the switch blade actuating the interrupter for a counterclockwise opening switch. Clockwise
operation is opposite hand.
-3-
(3) As the blade continues opening and the blade
tip touches the Duogap® operating lever, cur-
rent flow is divided momentarily into two cur-
rent paths:
(A) Blade, arc bolt, arcing horn and contact
terminal.
(B) Blade, blade tip, interrupter and contact
terminal.
As the blade continues, path (A) is lost and
path (B) only remains.
3
(4) Current flow continues through blade, blade
tip, operating lever, interrupter and contact
terminal. When air-gap is adequate to prevent
arc re-strike between blade and arcing horn,
the interrupter trips and breaks load internally.
Loadbreak occurs when the two contacts, part-
ing simultaneously, split the circuit allowing a
double break in the circuit. The heat of the arcs
cause gases to generate from the delrin sleeve
and liner which expels and cools the arc. The
gas pressure is then vented through the
weather/insect shield.
(5) The blade tip separates from the interrupter
operating lever after the interruption, resetting
the interrupter for the next operation.
During closing, the switch blade arc bolt picks
up the arcing horn before the blade tip brushes
past the operating lever of the interrupter, thus
only limited current is through the interrupter.

*This life curve also applies to a 27 kV three-phase
system voltage when applied on solidly grounded wye
systems.
Typical line and station applications will normally involve
switching magnetizing current, line charging current,
parallel load current, moderate load current, plus occa-
sional switching of full load current at full voltage. Hence,
the average life expectancy of the Duogap® interrupter
may well exceed that depicted by the curves.

APPLICATION NOTES:
1This chart applies to D6/D7 switches and Duogaps® manufactured by A. B. Chance Company for application on these
maximum system voltages.
2For application on three-phase solidly grounded systems with wye connected loads only.
3Maximum current available from test facility and does not necessarily represent a maximum value.
4Based on application to 4-wire grounded systems only and 1.2 times line-to-ground voltage —can be converted to miles
by: Miles =(160 Ic 3)/kV (L-L)
5Based on application to grounded systems only and line-to-ground voltage — can be converted to miles by: Miles =
Ic/[(Amps/1000 ft.) 5.28] where (Amps/1000 ft.) is a cable characteristic.
6Based on application to grounded systems only and 1.2 times line-to-ground voltage: Miles = Ic/[(Amps/1000 ft.) 5.28]
where (Amps/1000 ft.) is a cable characteristic.
7For applications where phase shift produces up to this rated loop switching voltage: No restriction on connections.
8Do not switch combinations of capacitor banks, unloaded lines or cables.

INSTALLATION/REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS
To remove:
(1) Loosen the interrupter retaining bolt.
(2) Rotate the interrupter counterclockwise while
pushing inward.
(3) Pull the interrupter out of the socket casting.
To install:
(1) Loosen the interrupter retaining bolt.
(2) Align the interrupter stud with the socket slot,
push the interrupter into the socket, and apply
a slight clockwise force. The stud will follow the
slot clockwise in the socket until the interrupter
is seated in its operating position.
(3) Tighten the retaining bolt just snug — do not
overtighten and cause damage to the inter-
rupter.
The interrupter can be hotstick-installed or removed from any phase of the D6 or D7 switch.
