Installation
Follow these steps to set your new answering system for proper operation.
1.
Insert the microcassette
Lift the microcassette cover and insert the microcassette with the full reel to the right.
2.
Connect the line cord
Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the TEL LINE jack, and plug the other end into a modular
wall jack.
3.
Connect your telephone to unit
(If you do not wish to connect a telephone to the system, go to Step 4.)
Plug your telephone set cord into the TEL SET jack at the rear of the unit.
4.
Connect the power cord
!
You should use only the power adapter supplied with your answering system. If you need a
replacement, call the National Sales and Service Center at 1 800 222 3111.
Fit the power cord behind the strain relief tab on the back of the unit and then plug the power cord into
the answering system jack marked POWER.
Plug the power transformer into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch. The microcassette
will automatically rewind. The MESSAGES light blinks during the tape movement and remains on
after the tape is positioned.
NOTE: If you have not installed the microcassette tape, the MESSAGES light blinks
continuously and the system beeps. Press ON/OFF to turn the unit off. Insert the microcassette.
Press ON/OFF to turn on and reset the unit.

Recording Your Announcement
Before using your new answering system, you should record an announcement. This is what callers will
hear when the system answers a call.
1.
Prepare your announcement. The maximum length is 2 minutes.
Example:
“Hello. I can’t come to the phone right now. Please leave your name, telephone number,
and a short message after the beep. I will return your call as soon as I can. Thank you.”
2.
Hold down ANNC.
3.
When the system beeps, speak toward the front of the unit in a normal tone of voice.
4.
Release ANNC when you are finished. The tape will reset automatically.
Playing Back Your Announcement
1.
If the tape is resetting, wait for it to stop moving.
2.
Set the VOLUME control (on the right side of the system) to the middle.
3.
Tap (quickly press and release) ANNC.
Changing Your Announcement
To change an announcement, see “Recording Your Announcement.” The new announcement will be
recorded over the old one.
When you change your announcement, no messages can be waiting and the MESSAGES light should be on
steady. If the light is blinking, first listen to your messages and then let the system clear them before you
record a new announcement.
At Home Operation
Automatic Answering Operation
After you have recorded your announcement, the MESSAGES light will be lit to tell you that your system is
ready to answer calls.
If you do not want your system to answer calls, press and release ON/OFF. The MESSAGES light goes off.
When you turn your unit off, the answering system features are accessible only from a remote location.
Your unit will answer a call after 10 rings to enable you to turn the system on from the remote location.
When the system answers a call, the caller hears the announcement you recorded, followed by a beep.
NOTE: The beep that the caller hears can be unusually long if there are many messages waiting. To
avoid this problem, clear your messages frequently.
After the beep, the system begins recording your caller’s message; it stops recording when the caller hangs
up or when the caller is silent for more than 7 seconds.
To conserve space on the tape, messages are limited to a maximum of 4 minutes. If the caller is still
speaking after 4 minutes, the system beeps once and hangs up.
If someone who calls frequently wants to bypass your announcement, you can instruct the caller to press and
release * when the announcement begins.
About Microcassettes
An MC-60 microcassette can record approximately 30 minutes on each side.
When the tape has been filled, you can either play all of the messages and then clear the tape, turn the tape
over to record on the other side, or change the microcassette.
When the tape is completely full of messages, the unit cannot record a caller’s message. The system
answers after 10 rings and beeps twice, but it does not play an outgoing announcement nor record the
caller’s message.
Volume Control
The VOLUME control is used to adjust the volume at which messages are played. Move the switch to find
a comfortable volume level.
Ring Select
Set the RING SELECT switch to 2, 4, or TS to choose the number of times the phone rings before the
system answers.
Set to 2 if you want the system to answer all calls on the second ring.
Set to 4 if you want the system to answer all calls on the fourth ring.
Set to TS if you want the system to answer calls on the second ring if you have messages, and on the
fourth ring if you do not have messages.
Toll Saver
Use the TOLL SAVER setting when you will be calling from another location to check for messages. The
system will answer after 2 rings only if you have messages waiting.
If there are no messages, the phone will ring at least 3 times before the system answers. You can then hang
up after the third ring to avoid paying long distance charges.
To use the Toll Saver feature, remember to move the RING SELECT switch to the TS setting.
Messages Light
The number of messages received is shown by the MESSAGES light. For example, if 5 messages are on
the tape, the MESSAGES light will blink 5 times, pause, and repeat.
NOTE: The maximum message count is 25. If the unit records more than 25 messages or memo, all
messages after the 25
th
will be treated as part of the last message.
Turning the System On and Off
The MESSAGES light shows whether the system is on or off. When the light is on steadily or blinking
slowly, the system is on and ready to answer calls according to the RING SELECT setting. When the light
is not on, the system is off. In this state, the system will answer only after 10 rings, which will allow you to
call in to turn the system on when you are away from home.
To turn the system off or on, press and release ON/OFF.
NOTE: If the MESSAGES light is flashing rapidly, the tape may be missing of broken; the system
will not answer calls until the condition is corrected.
Listening to Your Messages
To play your messages, press and release MESSAGES. The system will beep once after each message and
5 times after the last message has been played. You can then either press and release to save your messages
or do nothing and the system will reset after 10 seconds to clear your messages.
The following options are available:
To Listen to New Messages Only
To listen to new messages only (messages that were recorded after the last time you listened to your
messages), hold down MESSAGES until the system begins playing.
If there are no new messages, the system beeps 5 times rapidly.
To Clear Messages
If you do not press and release SAVE within 10 seconds after you have played your messages, the system
automatically resets itself to record new messages over the old. The old messages are not actually erased
from the tape until new messages come in.
To Save Messages
To save messages, press and release SAVE. The system will reset the tape, but the MESSAGES light will
continue to blink to show that messages have been saved.
To Rewind the Tape
Hold down REWIND. The tape rewinds as long as you hold down the button.
To Fast Forward the Tape
Hold down FAST FWD. The tape will advance as long as you hold down the button.
To replay Old (Cleared) Messages
Even if you have cleared messages, “old” messages remain on the tape until new messages have been
recorded over them. To replay old messages:
1.
Press and release SAVE. The system will reset the tape and the MESSAGES light will begin to blink.
2.
Press and release MESSAGES. The system will play all messages.
After all messages have played, press and release SAVE to save messages or the unit will automatically
reset to clear all messages.
To Interrupt Message Playback
Press and release STOP. Press and release MESSAGES to continue playing messages.
NOTE: If you press STOP to pause while listening to messages, you must press another button –
MESSAGES, FAST FWD, or REWIND – within 60 seconds to continue. If not, the unit
automatically saves all messages and resets to answer calls.
Screening Your Calls
To screen your calls, set the system to answer calls and adjust the VOLUME control so you can hear a
caller’s message. If you decide to take a call, lift the telephone handset of any telephone on the same line
and talk to the caller. The system stops recording and resets to answer calls.
NOTE: If the announcement does not stop right away, press and release the telephone switch hook or
press and release STOP.
Recording a Memo
A memo is recorded as an incoming message that can be played back at home or from a remote telephone.
1.
To record:
Hold down MEMO/2WAY. When the system beeps, speak towards the front of the
system.
2.
To stop recording:
Release MEMO/2WAY.
To play back the memo,
follow the instructions under “Listening to Your Messages.”
Recording a Telephone Conversation
NOTE: This unit does not sound warning beeps to let the other party know that the call is being
recorded. To ensure that you are in compliance with any federal or state regulations regarding
recording a telephone call, you should start the recording process and then inform your caller that
you are recording the call.
1.
Tap MEMO 2/WAY. The system fast forwards the tape to the end of your saved messages, beeps once
and begins to record.
2.
Press and release STOP to stop recording the conversation.
Many features of this system can be operated from a remote location by using any touch tone telephone.
Away from Home Operation
Remote Access Code
To protect your privacy, features such as playing, saving, or clearing messages require that a Remote
Access code be entered before they can be operated from a remote telephone.
The Remote Access code is preset and it cannot be changed. The code for your system is printed on the
underlid label.
To use your system remotely:
1.
Dial your telephone number from a touch-tone telephone.
2.
When the system answers, enter your Remote Access code.
When the Remote Access code is entered correctly, the system will beep twice, indicating that the system is
ready for a remote command.
NOTE: If you do not want to hear the announcement, enter your Remote Access code as soon as the
announcement begins. If the announcement does not stop, enter the Remote Access code again.
3.
Follow the instructions for the feature you wish to access. You have approximately 4 seconds to enter
a command; otherwise, the system will automatically begin to play your messages.
NOTE: You must call from a touch tone telephone to enter your Remote Access code and to operate
other remote features.
