1. SAFETY
BLP series Issue: 1 - 07/11/17
DANGER! - Beware, lead-acid batteries generate explosive gases during normal battery operation.
Wash with soap and water immediately if battery acid contacts skin or clothing. If acid enters eye, flush immediately with cool, clean running
water for at least 15 minutes and seek immediate medical attention.
DO NOT smoke or allow a spark or flame in the vicinity of the battery or engine.
If the battery terminals are corroded or dirty, clean them before attaching the leads.
WARNING! To prevent the risk of sparking, short circuit and possible explosion DO NOT drop metal tools in the battery area, or allow them to
touch the battery terminals.
Before attaching to battery, remove personal metallic items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches. A lead acid battery can produce
a short-circuit current which is high enough to weld such items and cause severe burns.
2. INTRODUCTION
3. INSTALLATION
Back-up batteries at communication sites may be damaged by over-discharge when AC power is lost for extended periods. Unless power is restored
in a timely fashion, transceivers will continue to draw current from the batteries long after any usable voltage has been drained from them. In some
cases, connection to a battery at low voltage damages the transceiver itself.
To protect site batteries and equipment against damage and to help avoid any unnecessary down-time from overdischarge situations, installation
of a Low Voltage Disconnect is recommended. The BLP contains a special sense and control circuit housed in a compact, rugged, sealed aluminum
case. It is installed in-line with the power leads between the battery and the load. The unit continually monitors battery voltage and if it should fall
below a preset voltage threshold, the BLP disconnects the load, preventing further discharge. When the battery is recharging and voltage is raised
above another preset voltage threshold, the load is automatically reconnected.
