If the SCU fails. Can the chassis muxes educate the new SCU upon insertion?

Yes. The Smart Start feature will configure a replacement piece of hardware to match that

of the card previously in that slot. Through Smart Start, provisioning can also be copie d

from card to card.

Please explain the SCSI cabling scheme. Are Y cables available in redundant mode?

We offer 1:1 equipment (circuit) protection. The connections between the cards are

contained within the backplane. No Y cables are required.

Please explain the BNC connector scheme in redundant mode.

In the same way as in 2, above, the transmit and receive lines are routed to the both the

standby and active card. No network protection is offered.

Does mux slot 2 backup 1 and so on? Or something else?

The redundant pairs are labeled as A and B. For example, the 3rd M13 slot pair is labeled

3A and 3B.

Does the 2820 have an AC to DC converter option?

How many SCU cards are required?

One SCU is required per shelf.

What is the maximum SCU cards to be installed?

The maximum number of SCU per shelf is one.

The back of the 19" chassis has 7 sets of BNC connectors for 7 DS3s from the network, correct?

Yes

I don't have to install 2 DS3 Mux cards to support one DS3 circuit, I could only install one DS3

Mux card, correct?

If the customer does not desire redundancy, you can run with a single mux card.

The Blank Mux panel, will that work in the redundant SCU slot (if there actually is one)?

There isn't a redundant SCU slot.

How many watts per chassis?

15.5 per redundant M13.

When would I use a Clock card?

For external timing when using STS-1 cards. You can also use local and network timing.

What are my other timing options?

Network and local

Are there cable options to come from the back of the MX2820 to a STUB end for wirewrap

applications?

We offer cables for the 2820 that are unterminated on one end for wire wrap applications.

The lengths available direct from ADTRAN are 25-ft, 50-ft, 100-ft, and 150-ft. Other

custom lengths are available through various cable vendors tooled up to make these cables.

The MX2800 uses a male 64 amp cable. Is ADTRAN going to provide an adapter cable which

goes from the new interface to a female 64 AMP so they can easily disconnect the 2800 and

reconnect the 2820 using their existing wiring?

We have adapter cables available.

Can any cable vendor assemble the DS1 metral cables?

There is some special tooling required. However, several cable contractors have successfully

tooled up and are selling cables to support MX2820.

When passively cooling, are the Baffles as depicted required, or will air-spaces suffice?

We recommend using baffles.

Is there a blank slot cover on the Clock Card Slot when the shelf ships? (or must a blank slot

cover be ordered for this slot as well?)

The blank for the clock card slot is ordered separately. It does not ship with the shelf.

What is the difference between the L1 DS1 cables and the DS2 cables?

List 1 ONLY has the plastic locking tab. List 2 ONLY has the overmolded screwdown

screw. We are moving toward combining both of these into one version that will essentially

be the clip with the screw in it.

What is the rack spacing when deploying large quantities of the MX2820?

Actively cooled, 7-ft bay within NEBS limitations, you can stack 9 MX2820 for 81

redundant M13.

Passively cooled, 7-ft bay within NEBS limitations, you can stack 7 MX2820 for 63

redundant M13.

When would I use a Clock card?

When you require external timing when deploying STS-1 cards. However, STS-1 cards can

also be used with local or network timing.

What are my other timing options?

Network and local

What is the operating temperature?

–40 to 50 degrees C without fans. Fans should allow operation to 65 degrees C.

Why is 1:1 better than 1:N?

You get a quicker switchover time with 1:1. In 1:1, the receive paths on the primary and

secondary cards are up and running all of the time. Immediate, constant comparisons are

available between the state of the primary and backup equipment. A protection switch in

the datapath is achieved by simply toggling the active transmitter. No relays switch (or fail

to) on the 28 DS1s. In 1:N, the backup card must be bridged on (with a relay) to the suspect

line to determine the type of failure prior to switching.

Tell me why the relay arrangement with a 1:1 is better than a 1:N.

Relays tend to take a lot of power in their energized state, and they are bulky.

What gauge cable is used with the Metral DS1 connector?

The DS1 connectors are compact, but allow 24 or 26 AWG cable to be used.

Is the 15.5 Watts inclusive of the on-line and redundant card?

The 15.5W is for a redundant pair.

Who/what lab does the NEBS testing on the MX2820?

Intertek Testing Services does this testing for us. We have the in-house Intertek engineers

do it, except for Lightning and Power Fault which we do under an audit program with UL.

We now have UL do a Verizon CLEC NEBS on new subassemblies as well.

What is the switch time in milliseconds for an acive DS3 to swap over to the standby?

The hit associated with switching to a standby card is approximately 30ms.

What’s the maximum distance customer can run a DS3 off of MX2820?

900 feet total cable length for 734 (the thick cable).

450 feet total cable length for 735 (the thin cable).

Keep in mind that DS3 distances are often quoted to a DSX panel which is up to half of the

total cable length.

What are the test patterns for the MX2820?

Ability to send CSU or NIU loop up codes toward DS1 ports.

Test patterns: We are adding all 1's, all 0's, 2 in 8, and 1 in 8 as alternatives to the current

QRSS. We are adding the ability to insert an error (a single logic error) during the BERT.

Can you test DS1 and DS3 ports?

The tests are still only toward the DS1 ports.

Can you test all ports simultaneously?

You can only test one port at a time. However, we are investigating adding this feature.

Can you mix STS and DS3 cards in the same chassis?

Yes

Is the MX2820 NEBS level 3 compliant?

The MX2820 is NEBS Level 3 compliant. It's been tested and we have independently

verified reports that indicate that product is compliant to the relevant requirements.

If a loaded shelf draws 3.74 Amps.... WHY do we recommend an 8-Amp Fuse?

Fuse size...it is rated at approx. twice the shelf draw (accommodates low voltage on the -48V

and STS-1 power estimates).

Do we ship a DB9 craft cable with the system?

The craft cable does not ship with the system.

Where can I find a list of SNMP traps available in the MX2820?

In the MIBS, but customer has to sign a license for these.

There is some confusion about binder groups on this new DS1 connector. Normally, in inside

wire or exchange cable with a large pair count all wires are in binder groups, the first being

white/blue, second white/orange ect.

This cable only has 28 pairs. There is a lower pair count than they may be used to working

with. Typically, on cables with less than 32 pairs, the first 25 never have a binder (it's really

not needed), and all pairs after 25 and up to 32 are in a binder (usually a blue binder)

For 50 pair cables, ALL pairs DO have a binder, but there are 2 blue binders and 2 orange

binders where the blue binders bind the first 25 pair (blue #1 has pairs 1-12, blue #2 has

pairs 13-25), and the orange binder binds the second set of 25 pairs (orange #1 = 2nd set

pairs 1-12, orange #2 = 2nd set pairs 13-25).

For cables with 100 pairs, ALL pairs are in binders. There are 4 binders, and each binder

binds a set of 25 pairs. The binders are color coded in this order:

Set 1 pairs 1-25 = Blue Binder

Set 2 pairs 1-25 = Orange Binder

Set 3 pairs 1-25 = Green Binder

Set 4 pairs 1-25 = Brown Binder

Can you remotely manage the MX2820 with a modem?

IP Forwarding functionality is now available in code D.01 for MUX and SCU.

What is the line length limitations for the T1 rated cable we use in our DS1 connector?

The metral cable is T1 rated cable...there are no line length limitations... Max distance is

655 feet. DS1 cables are 24 guage.

Are the blank Mux cards required?

To comply with NEBS fire test requirements in installations such as C.O., Huts, and Vaults

any vacant slot in the MX2820 needs to have a blank cover installed. It is not required at

the customer premises or RT's unless the safety guys make you have them.

What is the username and password to log in to the unit?

username: ADTRAN

password: PASSWORD

Do the M13’s behave as completely separate units and their Back Plane bandwidth is in no way

connected to each other?

Yes. Each M13 pair has an independent data path.

The power is a common feed? Are there separate fuses for each M13?

There are dual feeds on the shelf that should be independently fuse protected. The power

distribution in the shelf is protected by fuses on each card.

The Maintenance bus is common between each M13? If one unit fails will it take out the ability

to access the outers? How do you talk to each M13 is it a singe IP address or one for each unit?

The maintenance bus is common, but the system is designed to minimize the impact of

management traffic or failures. Management traffic access is shared among the mux pairs

such that none of the line cards can monopolize the bandwidth. If the SCU detects a card

that is unable to respond, then that card is skipped until it can respond (or is replaced).

Each shelf (containing up to 9 mux pairs for the 23" system) requires only a single

management IP address.

Can you use the patch panels with the MX2820?

1U high patch panel that provides 56 RJ connections for DSX-1 deployment. Fits in a 19"

rack. Includes four 6-foot 64-pin to 64-pin cables to connect directly to the rear of the

MX2800. To plug into the MX2820, the customer will need adapter cables (1186020L1 -

3FT,2MM FTRE BUS/AMP ADPTR CBL).

How any simultaneous telnet and or craft logins are supported?

MX2820 supports seven simultaneous telnet sessions.

Since there is only the one craft port, there can be only one craft login.

What is the current draw and heat dissipation for the MX2820 with 9 redundant M1/3 puts out.

150W per fully loaded 23" chassis, and that corresponds to roughly 3A current draw.

What is the difference between the patch cable and the adapter cable?

The 3-foot ADAPTER (female 64-pin amp) connects our unit to other cables.

The 6-foot PATCH (male 64-pin amp) connects our unit to other units.

What is Smart Start?

The mux card stores SCU provisioning and vice versa. Smart Start will configure a

replacement card to match the card previously in that slot.

Are E1s supported in MX2820?

Yes.

If the SCU fails. Can the chassis muxes educate the new SCU upon insertion?

Yes. The Smart Start feature.

We offer 1:1 equipment (circuit) protection. The connections between the cards are

from SCSI connectors to Metral connectors to accommodate standard DS1 cables.
