Installation and Operating Instructions
NOTE: Read the entire instruction manual before starting the
installation. Leave this instruction with homeowner.
INTRODUCTION
This instruction covers the installation of a Wireless Remote Room
Sensor Part No. ZONECC0WRS01 and Wireless Receiver Part
No. ZONECC0WRC01.
The Wireless Sensors and Receiver are designed to allow zone
temperature sensors to be installed without wiring. The battery-
operated sensor is a miniature radio transmitter which sends
temperature information to the Receiver. The Receiver passes this
information to the Comfort Zone II Equipment Controller. Each
zone transmits its temperature data at least once every 5 minutes.
While temperature is changing, it transmits as often as once per
minute.
An installation requires 1 sensor for each wireless zone and a
single Receiver. From 1 to 8 wireless sensors can be used,
allowing any zone to be wireless.
A small screwdriver with blade no wider than 3/32 in. will be
needed to attach wires to the receiver. Be sure to have this
available at the installation site.
Wireless sensors are useful when it is difficult to route wires to a
zone, or when a sensor may need to be moved to accommodate
changes in a room layout or usage.
The sensor battery is designed to last at least 3 years and
replacement batteries are available from local sources.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Read and follow manufacturer instructions carefully. Follow all
local electrical codes during installation. All wiring must conform
to local and national electrical codes. Improper wiring or installa-
tion may damage receiver.
Recognize safety information. This is the safety-alert symbol .
When you see this symbol on the equipment and in the instruction
manual, be alert to the potential for personal injury.
Understand the signal words DANGER, WARNING, and CAU-
TION. These words are used with the safety-alert symbol. DAN-
GER identifies the most serious hazards which will result in severe
personal injury or death. WARNING signifies hazards which
could result in personal injury or death. CAUTION is used to
identify unsafe practices which would result in minor personal
injury or product and property damage.
INSTALLATION
Step 1—Location and Installation of Wireless Receiver
IDENTIFYING WIRELESS RECEIVER
The Wireless Receiver and Wireless Remote Room Sensor both
use the same plastic case. The Receiver will be in the envelope
marked ZONECC0WRC01. Remove its cover by squeezing top
and bottom raised ridges and pulling 2 halves apart. The Receiver
has a 5-terminal connector; the sensor has a battery.
SELECTING A LOCATION FOR RECEIVER
Find a location for Wireless Receiver near Equipment Controller
so that wiring between them will be no longer than 10 ft and
routing of wires between them will be easy. Do not mount
Receiver on air handler plenum or any other metal surface. Mount
it so that coiled part of antenna (visible with cover removed) is
vertical.
MOUNTING RECEIVER
For ease of mounting, you may snap the circuit board out of the
plastic base. Use the 2 smaller oval holes in plastic base to mark
screw location on mounting surface. Note that wiring is intended
to exit through large oval hole in lower right of mounting base. A
path or hole in mounting surface will need to be provided for wires
to exit. Drill two 3/16-in. holes in mounting surface and mount
base using screws and anchors provided.
WIRING RECEIVER TO EQUIPMENT CONTROLLER
Before installing sensor, turn off all power to unit. There may
be more than 1 power disconnect. Electrical shock can cause
personal injury or death.
First turn OFF all power to zoning system. Using any 4-conductor
wire, connect Receiver to Equipment Controller as indicated in
Fig. 1. Mount Receiver into its base and route wires neatly. Do not
attach the cover yet.
Step 2—Location and Installation of Wireless Sensors
IDENTIFYING WIRELESS SENSORS
The Wireless Sensor is in a bag marked ZONECC0WRS01. There
may be several sensors in 1 installation.
LOCATION OF SENSORS
Wireless Sensors should be located in the same manner as any
thermostat. Review Comfort Zone II Installation Instructions for
details. Once a location is determined, the sensor circuit board may
be removed from mounting plastic for ease of mounting or to bring
it closer to the Receiver for the configuration process described
next.
WIRED SENSORS MUST BE REMOVED
When a zone has a Wireless Sensor, the wired Remote Sensor must
be disconnected from the Equipment Controller. If it is left
connected, the system will not respond to Wireless Sensor. When
a Wireless Sensor is to be used in zone 1, the temperature sensor
in the User Interface must be cut. Open User Interface and locate
glass sensor element in lower right corner. Using pliers or scissors,
cut 1 wire and bend sensor so contact will not be made. This saves
sensor element should it ever be used again. Refer to Zoning
Installation Instructions.

Step 3—Electric Configuration of Wireless Sensors and
Receiver
INTRODUCTION
Each Wireless Sensor contains a unique identifying code which is
sent each time it communicates with the Receiver. The Receiver
must learn this code from each sensor so that it will only respond
to its sensors and to no others. It then acts like a protecting
password, preventing Wireless Sensors in other systems from cross
communicating with this system. At each transmission, the sensor
transmits the zone number, zone temperature, and an error check-
ing code along with the identifying code. If either of the 2 codes
does not check, the temperature data is ignored. This eliminates the
possibility of erroneous temperature data being received and used.
The system learns the unique identifying codes of the sensors
during the first 10 minutes after the power is applied to the system.
If any zones are added or revised after the 10-minute learning
period, learning period may be restarted by reapplying the power.
If the system does not "learn" a zone, 2 dashes ("--") will appear
in the User Interface’s display in place of the zone temperature
indication and will result in that zone’s damper being closed.
1. Establishing Identifying Code
Use the following procedure to allow the system to install
sensor identifying codes in the Receiver. It is easiest to have
all sensors with you near the Receiver during the setup
process. When finished, sensors can be returned to their proper
locations in their zones. Remember, the following steps must
be completed within 10 minutes after power is applied.
a. Remove and reapply power to zoning system, starting
10-minute timer.
b. Press "install" button on Receiver once. The red LED will
come on and stay on, indicating Receiver is in setup mode.
See Fig. 1 for location of button and LED.
c. On the sensor, pull out battery tab to turn on sensor. Make
sure battery polarity is correct (+ on board matches + on
battery) and the contacts hold battery firmly.
d. Set the rotary switch to the applicable zone number. The
indicator is a small dot beside the screwdriver slot in the
rotary switch. See Fig. 2.
e. Press and hold install button on sensor for 3 sec. The
sensor’s green LED should come on and off.
f. On the Receiver, the LED will flash once indicating it has
received the information. This flash may be barely notice-
able.
g. Repeat steps a. through f. for all other wireless zone
sensors. Be sure proper zone number is set into each one.
h. On the Receiver, press install button once again. This will
turn off the Receiver red LED and exit installation mode.
2. If You Made a Mistake and Want to Start Over
You can either reinstall the identifying codes of the errant
sensor or erase the entire configuration and start over. To
reinstall the Sensor(s), repeat steps 3-1-a through 3-1-h above.
To erase the entire configuration, with the red Receiver LED
on (if not on, momentarily press the button), press and hold the
button until the red LED goes off. The Receiver is now
completely cleared, it has no memory of wireless zones
previously installed. You may now start with step 3-1 above.

Zones cannot be removed without completely clearing the
Receiver memory. Follow Step 3-2 above to remove all
wireless zones and then reinstall the new arrangement.
4. If You Want to Add a Zone
Zones may be added without losing the memory of existing
zones. Follow procedure listed in Step 3-1 above for zones to
be added.
Step 4—Verification of Installed Zones
1. Remember that the entire wireless zone installation process
must be completed within 10 minutes of the time power is
turned on. If there is a question about the time, remove power
and then turn it back on to restart 10-minute timer.
2. Wait 5 minutes to allow all sensors to transmit new tempera-
ture information. Then look for the presence of wireless zones
at the User Interface. Press NEXT ZONE button on User
Interface to advance from zone to zone. All existing zones will
appear in sequence in ZONE X display where X is the zone
number. Each of the wireless zones should exist and its
temperature and set points should be displayed.
3. If Zone Does Not Exist
If wireless zone does not exist, i.e., its zone number is skipped
over, it has not been successfully installed. Try reinstalling
that zone, following Steps 3-1-a through 3-1-h above.
4. If "--" Appears in the Display
If "--" appears in zone temperature display for that zone, the
zone exists but zone temperature data is not valid or is not
being received. Wait another 5 minutes. If "--" still shows, the
Wireless Sensor for that zone is not transmitting properly.
Check its battery again for polarity and good contact. If it still
does not work, the transmitter or battery is bad and should be
replaced. If the transmitter is replaced, the installation proce-
dure for that zone only must be repeated.
5. Finally, return all zone sensors to their proper zones. Be sure
to not get them mixed up. The internal rotary switch setting
must correspond properly to the zone in which it is located.
Install covers on all sensors and Receiver. The system is now
ready for operation.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
BATTERY LIFE
The sensor battery is designed to operate for approximately 4
years. When it does fail, the temperature indication for that zone
will be "--" and its zone’s damper will close. The failure of the
battery will not cause the system to lose information for that zone.
When the battery is replaced, that zone will operate properly with
no additional setup.
LOSS OF POWER
If electrical power is interrupted in a system with Wireless
Sensors, no special action must be taken when power is restored.
All needed zone information is stored in non-volatile memory in
the zoning system, and proper operation will automatically re-
sume.
BATTERY REPLACEMENT
The replacement battery is a type 123, size 2/3 A, 3V, 1.3 Ahrs.
lithium battery. This battery is available at local retail establish-
ments. Acceptable replacement manufacturers and part numbers
are: Panasonic CR-123A, Energizer EL-123AP, Duracell
