RC906/916-FXE1 has high sensitivity optical interface,
so the power of optical transceiver output interface
must be checked before connecting RC906/916-FXE1
to it. To avoid damaging, it is not allowed that the
optical power of transceivers output interface is
higher than that of RC906/916-FXE1.
RC906/916-FXE1 is an integrated device which has
precise elements, please avoid violent shake and
impact, and do not disassemble or maintain the device
yourself. If it is required, please do it under the guide
of our technical staff following anti static steps. Please
contact us if there is any need.
There must be grounding protection for the sake of
safety; do not disassemble the device yourself, we

2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
RC906/916-FXE1 is a communication device which is applied for converting signals
between 100Base-FX Ethernet interface and E1 interface; it is widely used for
interconnecting, accessing and extending LAN. RC906/916-FXE1 makes the long
transmission distance of LAN possible by using E1 channel and optical interface, so
organizing LAN and WAN becomes more convenient.
RC906/916-FXE1 can be managed through SNMP or remotely with together use of
RC906-EE1 if it is installed in the chassis (for Raisecom only) of 16 slots (3U) or 4 slots,
and it also can be used as desktop device when installed in single slot chassis.
2.2 Main features
z Provide one channel 100M full-duplex optical interface and one channel E1 interface
(75 ohm or 120 ohm), so Ethernet data can be transmitted in E1 channel.
z Provide both E1 fractional mode and transparent mode, and E1 bandwidth can be set
as N×64KbpsN=1~31in fractional mode.
z Remote alarm traps are available in E1 fractional mode.
z Support Ethernet maximum frame size of 1593 bytes.
z Support flow control of IEEE802.3x.
z Support both local and remote network management.
2.3 Interconnection
RC906/916-FXE1 can be geminately used with RC905-EE1or RC906-EE1.

3 Parameters
3.1 Parameters of E1 interface

Note: if there is some equipment (PCM device, or DXC device for example) that
requires modifying the timeslot 0 of E1, the remote alarm inspecting function of the
converter is invalid then.
3.2 E1 cable type:
SYV 75-2-2 coaxial cable is recommended for unbalanced signal and the maximum
transmission is more than 200m.
Twisted-pair of 0.6mm (22AWG) is recommended for balanced signal.

3.4 Network management
Software of network management is optional, and the functions are as follows:
Report to controlling computer the 4 level E1 link alarms.
Local fractional/transparent mode, PCM31/30 mode, CRC test switch, Ethernet bandwidth
and alarm pass through are all available to be setup.
Report Ethernet interface running status to controlling computer.
Shut down Ethernet interface or sub card through software.
Report TLK and RLK status as remote device and can be reset by local.
Record all history events

4.1 Front panel introduction

4.1.1 Definitions of indicators
E1 link indicators:
LALred: Alarm of local E1 channel receiving signal loss.
ON: In E1 fractional mode, this indicator indicates: LOS (loss of signal), or
LOF (loss of frame), or AIS (up-stream alarm indication signal), or CRC
(cyclic redundancy check).
In E1 transparent mode, this indicator only indicates LOF (loss of
frame), or AIS (up-stream alarm indication signal).
OFF: E1 channel is normal.
RALred: Alarm of remote E1 devices.
ON: In E1 fractional mode, there is LAL alarm of remote device.
OFF: E1 is normal.
Ethernet indictors:
RLKgreen: On, optical interface receiving link is normal;
Off, error of receiving link.
TLKgreen: On, optical interface transmitting link is normal;

Off, error of transmitting link.
ACTgreen: Flashing when receiving or transmitting Ethernet data.
Power indicator:
PWRgreen: On, when device is powered on.
4.1.2 Definitions of interface
E1 BNC interface:
TX: BNC connector, output of E1 signal;
RX: BNC connector input of E1 signal.
It provides two types of impedance: 75 or 120, which can be selected by the switch on
the rear panel, and unbalance signal of 75 is by default. It is required to pull back the
shielding cover at the same time when plug out wire cable.
Ethernet optical interface:
The following conditions must be satisfied when connecting to other device’s
optical interface:
Same wavelength (single mode fiber of dual wave length is not included)
Same rate
Power is matchable
Support Fast Ethernet IEEE 802.3u
4.2 Instructions of DIP switches setting
There are two 2-bit Dip-switches on the obverse panel (on the more fittings side), one 6-bit
and one 8-bit Dip switches on the rear panel (on the less fitting side). Please setup the
Dip-switch before device powered on!

4.2.1 SW1 switch indication
SW1 is close to E1 interface

bit: setup E1 interface as fractional mode or transparent mode
ON=E1 fractional mode, in this case the transmission rate is N×64Kbps, N=1~31
OFF=E1 transparent mode, or unframed mode, and the transmission 2048Kbpsby
default
E1 is in transparent mode by default, and then switch SW3 is invalid. SW3 only works
in fractional mode.

bitFault-Pass-Through switch. ON means to enable Fault-Pass-Through. When
there are LOS, LOF, AIS, CRC, RAL alarms which may lead to Ethernet interface failure, it
will report to controlling computer. Ethernet interface works normally only there is no E1
link alarm. OFF means to disable the function, that is to say there is no relation between
Ethernet interface and E1 alarms.
3rd bit~6th bits are used to set the impedance of E1 interface:

4.2.2 Default value of SW1

4.2.3 SW2 switch indication
SW2 is effective under the condition of SW1’s 1st bit is ON, that is to say in E1
fractional mode it is effective
1st bit: switch of remote network management function
ON means enable
OFF mean disable (by default)
2ed bit: local or remote device optional switch
ON means local device
OFF means remote device (by default)
This bit is only effective when enable remote network management, one of the two
devices must set as local and the other as remote.
4.2.4 SW3 switch indication
SW3 is effective when 1st bit of SW1 is ON, that is to say in E1 fractional mode
1st~5th bit: set up bandwidth that Ethernet data occupies fractional E1 timeslots, that
is N value of N*64Kbps rate. Please see the following table:

In the table above, “0” represents ON “1” represents OFF. For instance, 384Kbps
bandwidth setting should be “00110”, then the Dip-switch should be setup as “ON, ON,
OFF, OFF, ON”. It’s recommended that you’d better firstly write down the binary code of
bandwidth you required, then set up according to the regulation of “1=OFF, 0=ON”. The
default status of these 5 bits dip-switches are OFF.
Note: The bandwidth of local and of remote should be the same.
“Maximum bandwidth 1” means maximum bandwidth in the condition of PCM30.
“Maximum bandwidth 2” means maximum bandwidth in the condition of PCM31.
6th bitPCM 31/30 optional switch in E1 fractional mode.
ON means PCM30 modealso called FAS+CAS mode.
OFF means PCM31 mode, also called FAS only mode (default mode).
This bit of Dip-switch of two inter-operated interface converters should be the same;
otherwise the equipment will work abnormally.
7th bitCRC4 checkout option switch in E1 fractional mode.
ON means to disable CRC4.
OFF means to enable CRC4 (by default).
It can be set up for user’s requirement, but OFF is recommended. This bit of Dip-switch of
two inter-operated interface converters should be the same; otherwise the equipment will
work abnormally.
8th bitclock mode optional ON/OFF Dip-switch.
ON means to follow up E1 link and receive timing, also called Slave Clock.
OFF means local site timing, also called Master Clock (by default).
This bit of dip-switch is effective only in the condition of E1fractional mode.
In E1 fractional mode, the two interconnected converters should be set up as one master
clock mode at one side, and another one is slave clock mode at another side. If not, they
will work abnormally. If timeslot cross-connection equipment / multiplexer equipment are

in serial connection in E1 link, then there should be only one master clock in the E1 link,
and the rest equipments will receive clock following E1 link.
4.2.5 Default value of SW3

Note: to prevent large potential difference between equipments in E1 link and for the sake
of device interface safety, please connect E1 link before device powered on. E1 interface
should avoid hot-swap.
4.2.6 SW4 switch indication
SW4 is factory default set, and can not be changed by users.
4.3 Occupation of transmission data in E1 fractional mode
(1) Timeslot occupation in PCM31 mode
In PCM31 mode, N31timeslot 0 is occupied by system. N accounts from 1st timeslot.
(2) Timeslot occupation in PCM30 mode
In PCM30 mode, N30, timeslot 0, timeslot 16 are occupied by system. N accounts from
1st timeslot and skip over 16th timeslot if exceeds.

5 Installation & Preparation
1. Make sure E1 link Cable Matches connected Equipment
If equipments such as PDH, SDH are used in E1 link which RC series converters are
connected to, please read their usage manuals for the type, definition, and impedance of
E1 interface.
2. Make sure Optical Medium Matches Converter
Optical medium for RC906-FXE1-M should be multi mode and the connector should be
SC/PC.
Optical medium for RC906-FXE1-S1/2/3 should be single mode and the connector should
be SC/PC.
Optical medium of single mode interface of RC916-FXE1-S1 should be single mode and
the connector should be SC/PC.
Optical medium of single mode interface of RC916-FXE1-S2 should be single mode and
the connector should be SC/APC.
3. Confirm the type of optical cable
Cable type that used for multi mode fiber interface:
62.5/125um multi mode fiber or 50/125um multi mode fiber
Cable type that used for single mode fiber interface:
9/125um single mode fiber
4. A conventional application
This device can provide user a 75 ohm unbalanced E1 interface, an optical interface that
can be connected to 100M full-duplex Ethernet and 2048Kbps actual transmission
bandwidth when all of the settings are in default status.
Please refer to chapter 2 when you need to adjust parameters.

In the above application, there should different optical transceiver to match different
optical interface parameters of RC906/RC916-FXE1, recommended configurations are as
follows:

5. RC906/RC916-FXE1 should be used in pairs as point to point topology, and it also
can be connected to RC905-EE1 standalone interface converter or RC906-EE1
module interface converter.

6 Troubleshooting
If you have any problems in installation and application, please try to solve it according to
following suggestions. If it still can not be settled please contact technical staff for support.
1 Power indicator (PWROFF
There is something wrong with power supply.
2 RLK OFF
There is something wrong with Ethernet receiving link, please check if fiber is cut off or
optical interface of the other end is in 100M full-duplex mode.
3 TLK OFF but RLK ON
There is something wrong with Ethernet transmission link, please check whether fiber is
cut off or optical interface of the other end is in 100M full-duplex mode.
4 LAL ON
If device works in transparent mode, LAL indicator means signal loss or up-stream AIS
alarm.
If device work in fractional mode, LAL means one of the following alarms: LOS (loss of
signal), LOF (loss of frame), AIS (up-stream alarm indication signal), and CRC (cyclic
redundancy check).
LOS means E1 interface can not receive signals.
Please check if the input E1 link is connected correctly, check the pin serial number if 120
ohm twisted-pair is used
Please check if the devices connected to E1 interface of converter are powered on.
Please check if E1 input link disconnects with bit error rate tester.
AIS means there is full 1s alarm of up-stream alarm.
Please check whether the devices in up-stream E1 link are powered on.
Please check if the impedance switch is set correctly, check the pin serial number if 120
ohm twisted-pair and if the connector becomes flexible.
Please check if output link disconnects with bit error rate tester and whether bit error rate

is within limit standard.
LOF alarm can result in LAL indicator flicking or ON, this means E1 signal is out of frame.
If the device works in transparent mode, there is no LOF alarm.
Please chick if interface impedance switch is set correctly.
Please check if bit error rate is within limit standard by bit error rate tester.
If your E1 link has equipments of other brands, there may be a few LAL flicking alarms
when the converter is just powered on, this is normal. Please wait for a while, and the
alarm will disappear. If LAL is flicking for a long time, there must be something wrong with
the link.
CRC alarm means there is severe bit error in E1 link.
In transparent mode, there is no CRC alarm.
CRC alarms may accompany with LOS or AIS, please check if bit error rate is within limit
standard with bit error rate tester.
If the suddenly appeared CRC alarms make LAL indicator flicking, which may result in
network disconnecting, basically this is caused by initializing link process when the
equipment is just reset. In this case, large traffic should be paused for a while, and the link
will recover in 10~30 seconds automatically.
If CRC checkup optional switch---- 7th bit of SWS is ON (CRC disabled), then this alarm
indicator would not be caused by CRC.
5 RAL ON
Remote alarm, this means there is something wrong with remote end device of receiving
direction, please check the link between TX and RX.
6 Severe packets loss
If you need to set the converter in E1 fractional mode (refer to the definition of 1st bit of
SW1), there must be two interconnected equipments in both sides, one in master clock
mode and the other in slave clock mode.
