CLAYDON TRAILED 4 METRE
INTRODUCTION
Thank you for your purchase of a new Claydon trailed 4 metre seed drill. The Claydon Hybrid Seed Drill is
a high performance drill designed to sow seeds of a wide variety, type and size. Due to its electronically
controlled metering system this is achieved accurately and economically.
The purpose of this Operators Manual, is to comprehensively explain to the operator how to set up, use
and maintain the machine.
It is important that the operator reads this manual carfeully to correctly set up, use and maintain the
machine safely. It is particularly essential that the Warnings and Cautions section has been read carefully.
For any further assistance or explanation please contact Claydon Yield-O-Meter using the contact details
given on the front cover. The serial number stamped on the support beam beneath the front of the hopper,
will also need to be quoted.
The Claydon 4M Trailed Hybrid is designed to provide many years of excellent service with little maintenance
due to its robust construction and its small number of moving parts. however, for optimum machine life,
some maintenance will be necessary.
We reserve the right to make future modications to the machine that could make some diagrams and
descriptions in this manual out of date’. While the clarity of the manual should not be aected by this,
please bring any concerns to the attention of Claydon Yield-O-Meter Ltd for us to resolve the problem.
SPECIFICATION OF THE MACHINE
The Claydon 4M Trailed Hybrid holds the following specication as standard.
The machines identication plate is located on the front chassis beam of the drill, below the seed hopper
on the right hand side as you stand behind the Drill.

DIRECTIVE PROVISIONS
The Claydon Hybrid Seed Drill conforms to Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (See appendix B -
Declaration of Conformity at the rear of the manual).
AIRBORNE NOISE EMISSIONS
The A-weighted emission sound pressure level of measurements taken directly at the fan is 94dBA.
WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS
These warnings and cautions must be observed when operating the Hybrid Seed Drill.
Ensure total weight of tractor/ drill combination does not exceed permitted limits and that the
weight of the tractor is sucient for safe eld and road use.
Do not allow anyone to stand between the tractor and drill during coupling or uncoupling
procedures.
For maintenance or adjustment of the drill ensure that it is lowered to the ground.
Seed dressing is highly poisonous so protective measures-gloves, goggles, facemask must be used
while loading the hopper and cleaning the machine after use with compressed air.
The hydraulic system on the machine operates under high pressure and pressurised hydraulic oil
is dangerous. Connecting/disconnecting the drill must only be undertaken with the tractor engine
turned o and the pressure in the hoses released.
Before operating the machine ensure no-one is standing within range of its turning circle, including
the marker arms.
The Tungsten points on the leading tines should be protected by parking the drill on wooden boards.
Never lower the drill directly onto concrete

CLAYDON TRAILED 4 METRE
Connect the hydraulic hoses to the tractor spools in their relevant pairs. The 1” ISO female coupling with
18L male thread supplied with your drill MUST be connected to the tractor rear axle. If necessary, your
tractor dealer will advise. The return pipe cannot just be inserted into the ller cap as the oil cannot
return to the pump suciently quickly in many tractors. DO NOT CHANGE THE 1” ISO TO A DIFFERENT
SIZE AS THIS COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE FAN MOTOR,WHICH IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. The
fan return cannot be connected to the tractor ISO.
The seed/fert transfer Pipes are tted with fan balancing valves so that adjustment can be made to the
velocity of the air travelling through each pipe. This may be necessary when there is a large dierence in
rates between each metering unit. For example there may be a situation when you are drilling 120kg/ha
of seed and 340kg/ha of fertiliser, the percentage air velocity on the seed side would need to be less to
cater for the dierence in seed/fert rates. This can be achieved by adjusting the air valve on the seed pipe
by moving the lever towards the rear of the machine (reducing air velocity). Where possible the valves
should be left fully open, only reduce the air velocity on the pipe metering the smaller rate. Where rates
are equal the valves should both remain fully open..

CLAYDON TRAILED 4 METRE
On delivery of the drill the marker arms may be in their shortest position for transport. Both marker arms
will have to be set up for the working width of the machine. Additionally, should the driving position not
be central (either through drivers choice or position of the seat) it may be necessary to adjust the two
markers to avoid gaps or over drilling.
Figure 4 shows where to measure from in order to set the marker arm distance followed by a brief
explanation on how to achieve this. It is advised to carry out this process when the drill is in the ground
and at the correct working depth.
MARKER ARMS (If tted)
Figure 4 – Marker Arms
Measure horizontally from the centre of the middle (leading) tine on the machine to the centre of the
marker point (the spring tine at the marker arm, that runs behind the wheel), with the marker arm swung
out completely. This measurement needs to be equal to the width of the machine, e.g. for a 6m wide
machine the measurement between the two points must be 6m. To lengthen the marker arm, slacken
the U-Bolt, slide the arm out to the correct length and retighten.
If the marker arm tine is not aggressive enough during operation, then a more prominent mark can
be made by adjusting the tine angle. This is achieved by slackening the bolts at the stub axle shaft and
allowing the whole unit to pivot round on the slotted holes (Figure 5).

UNFOLDING THE DRILL
IN FIELD OPERATION
1. Ensure all hydraulic hoses are connected to the tractor spool valves correctly.
DO NOT OPERATE ANY HYDRAULIC FUNCTIONS UNLESS THE FREE FLOW RETURN IS CORRECTLY
INSTALLED. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE DRILL’S HYDRAULIC SYSTEM WHICH
WILL NOT BE COVERED BY THE WARRANTY.
2. Operate the tractor spool valve to lift the drill (hose marked II).
3. Once the drill is raised, operate the spool valve to fold the wings (hose marked II). This will ensure that
the steps are fully folded and the drill is lifted clear of its transport hooks.
4. Reverse the drill spool valve to begin lowering the wings, (hose marked I) once fully unfolded return
the spool valve to the central position.
5. Operate the tractor spool valve to lower the drill into work (hose marked I)
6. Operate the tractor spool to start the fan (hose marked II) for safety you should reduce the ow rate
on the tractor spool valve to the minimum setting and then slowly increase the ow rate on the tractor
spool valve to the minimum setting and then slowly increase the ow rate once the fan is running to
achieve a fan speed of 4,000rpm.
OPERATING THE DRILL
To operate the drill use the spool valve to raise and lower the drill in and out of work (hoses marker I & II),
the bout markers (if tted) and pre emergence markers are controlled by the drill computer, see section
on navigating the control unit.
Ensure the spool valve is operated for long enough to ensure the bout markers (if used) are fully
extended before returning the spool valve to its central position.
Each time the drill is raised both bout markers (if tted) and the pre emergence markers are also raised
out of work to ensure safe and convenient headland turns.
FOLDING THE DRILL
1. Stop the fan. The drill will not fold with the fan running.
2. Operate the tractor spool valve (hose marked II) to fully raise the drill.
3. Operate the tractor spool valve to fold up the wings of the drill (hose marked II).
4. Operate the tractor spool valve to lower the drill into its transport hooks (hose marked I) ensure
the depth wheels are fully retracted.

ACCESSING THE HOPPER
When the wings of the drill are raised the access platform is automatically raised to prevent damage
to the drill. To lower the platform: pull the actuator knob on the ladder assembly (Figure 7). To prevent
damage to the drill, the access platform must only be lowered when the drill is unfolded.
