Stacking Cable
5000/9000 Series Fibre Channel Switch
These instructions describe the interconnection of QLogic 5000 Series switches and QLogic 9000
series switches using XPAK–XPAK and XPAK–X2 stacking cables. QLogic 5000 Series switches have
XPAK ports. QLogic 9000 Series switches have X2 ports. Connection combinations are as follows:
Remove 10-Gbps Port Covers
Both QLogic 5000 and QLogic 9000 Series switches come with port covers in the XPAK and X2 ports.
Before installing the XPAK cables, remove the port covers:
For a QLogic 5000 switch, remove the port covers by the cover tabs using your fingers or pliers.
For a QLogic 9000 switch, remove the port cover using a small flathead screwdriver. Insert the
screwdriver in the cover slot and gently pry the cover from the port.

Connecting QLogic 5000 Switches
Using an XPAK–XPAK connector, install the cable connectors with the circuit board facing the mid line
of the respective switch faceplates. The cable connector will fit only one way. When installing the
3-inch XPAK cable, insert the cable connectors into the XPAK ports at the same time as shown.
Connecting QLogic 5000 and 9000 Switches
To connect a QLogic 5000 switch and a QLogic 9000 switch, use an XPAK–X2 cable. Install the XPAK
connector in the QLogic 5000 XPAK port with the circuit board toward the mid line of the switch. Install
the X2 connector in the QLogic 9000 X2 port with the circuit board facing to the left.
To connect two QLogic 9000 switches, using an X2–X2 cable. Install the cable connectors in the
respective switch X2 ports with the circuit boards on the left. The cable connector will fit only one way.
