Just ask your questions, and providing more details will help me assist you more effectively!
1 Safety
b Read the entire Quickstart before using the device.
b Connection, assembly, and settings must be performed by
competent technicians.
b Do not connect external I/O signals to the device while it is
powered. This may damage the device.
b Protect the device from moisture and dirt during operation.
b Do not use the device in areas with risk for explosion.
b Safe operation of lasers (accessory) depend on the type of
lasers being used. Carefully read the safety instructions in
the laser’s manual.
2 Product Specication
Ranger E is a high-speed 3D camera that can measure up to
35,000 shape proles/s. The camera can also operate in a
MultiScan mode, where it can simultaneously measure 3D,
grayscale, scatter, gloss, etc.
Ranger D is an alternative to the Ranger E, for use where
mid-speed performance is sufcient (see
C ). The Ranger
D measures 3D with as high resolution, but requires less
conguration, and does not offer the possibility of MultiScan.
The Ranger serves as a data streamer, from which the
measurement data is transferred through a Gigabit Ethernet
connection to a PC for further processing.
The Ranger can be started, stopped and congured by applica-
tions running on the PC. Note that the 3D Camera Develop-
ment software is required to build such applications.
The Ranger E/D is intended to be the vision component in a
machine vision system.
The ISM Radio Frequency Classication is Group 1, Class A
(EN55011).
Warning: Class A equipment is intended to be used in an
industrial environment.
3 Connections
B
Ranger E/D is connected to a 24 V DC power supply, and to a
PC running Windows 7/XP equipped with a Gigabit Ethernet
network board:
b The power supply is connected to the Power I/O connector
(M12 connector).
b The Gigabit Ethernet board in the PC is connected to the
Gigabit Ethernet connector (RJ45), either directly or through
an Ethernet switch.
b I/O signals that are used, for example pulse trigger signals
from encoders or the laser trigger signal from the Ranger
camera, are connected to the Power I/O and the Encoder
connector respectively (M12 connector).
4 System Requirements
b PC
Recommended: Windows XP Pro 32/64 bit or
Windows 7 32/64 bit, at least 4 GB memory,
Gigabit Ethernet network card supporting jumbo
frames.
b Ethernet
cable
Up to 70 m using CAT 6 cables.
For longer distances or tough environments,
opto cables can be used.
5 Installation
D
b Install the Gigabit Ethernet board ( a ) and the 3D Camera
Development software (
b ) on the PC.
b Attach a lens to the Ranger (
c ).
b Mount the Ranger, additional light sources, and other equip-
ment to be used by the vision system such as encoders and
photoelectric switches for triggering.
b If the I/O signals are used, connect the equipment using the
signals to the Power I/O or Encoder connector of the Ranger.
A Ranger E/D Power-I/O terminal (
d ) can also be used
for connecting I/O signals to the Ranger. It offers screw
terminals for connecting the signals, and connects to the
Ranger with a Ranger E/D Power-I/O-Encoder Y-cable (
e ).
b Connect the Gigabit Ethernet connector on the Ranger to a
dedicated Gigabit network, or directly to the Gigabit network
connector on the PC using a Gigabit Ethernet cable (
f ).
b Connect an unpowered 24 V DC power supply (
g ) to the
Power I/O connector on the Ranger, or to the power plug on
the Ranger E/D Power-I/O terminal.
b Switch on the power supply.
For detailed installation instructions, see the Ranger E/D
Reference Manual that can be found on the 3D Camera
Development software CD, or be downloaded from:
visionsupport.sick.com
6 Service and Maintenance
The Ranger E/D contain no user serviceable parts inside. The
warranty of the device will be void if opened.
b Check screw connections and connectors at regular
intervals.
b Clean the housing with a soft cloth, dry or dampened with a
mild water diluted cleaning agent without powder additives.
In case of unit failure, please contact SICK or a SICK represen-
tative that delivered the unit for further instructions.
