DVD50. TheDVD50 isamultipurposefive-disc
playerthat deliversthe highestlevelof playback
qualityfrom awide rangeof optical mediafor-
mats.Alongwith conventionalDVDandCD
audiodiscs,the DVD50 isalsocompatiblewith
CD-RandCD-RWdiscs,discswith HDCD
encoding,VCDdiscsanddiscsrecordedwith
audiofiles inthe MP3format.However,the
DVD50doesmorethansimplyplaydiscsin this
extensivelist offormats,it playsthemflawlessly,
andprovidesoutputsignalsthat matchthe
capabilitiesof the latestaudioandvideo display
technologies.
Onthe videoside,the DVD50 isoneof thefirst
5-discchangersto offer progressivescanvideo
outputsfor usewith digital "HDTV-Ready"dis-
playmonitors.Usingahigh-speed,single-chip
digital processor,the DVD50 iscapableof
reconstructingthe3/2 pulJdowneffectintro-
ducedwhen film-basedprogramsaretrans-
ferredto video.Inconjunctionwith precision
videooutput DACs,the endresultisa full 60-
frame-per-secondoutput that is theclosest
thing to filmthissideof yourlocalcinema.Of

120- 230-voltACcurrent,butthe plugis
specificallydesignedfor 120-voltapplications.
Connectiontoa linevoltageother thanthat for
whichit isintendedcancreatea safetyandfire
hazardandmaydamagethe unit.
Ifyouhaveanyquestionsaboutthevoltage
requirementsfor yourspecificmodel,or about
the linevoltagein yourarea,contactyoursell-
ingdealerbeforepluggingthe unit intoa wall
outlet.
DoNot UseExtension Cords
Wedo not recommendthat extensioncordsbe
usedwith this product.As with all electrical
devices,do not runpowercordsunderrugsor
carpetsorplaceheavyobjectson them.
Damagedpowercordsshouldbereplaced

Handlethe AC PowerCord Gently

Installation Location
Toensureproperoperation,andto avoidthe
potentialfor safetyhazards,placethe unit
on afirm andlevelsurface.Whenplacing
the unit on ashelf,becertainthat the shelf
andanymountinghardwarecansupportthe
weight of the product.
Makecertainthatproperspaceisprovided
both aboveandbelow the unitfor ventila-
tion. If this productwill be installedin a cab-
inetor otherenclosedarea,makecertain
that thereissufficientair movementwithin
the cabinet.
Donot placethe unit directlyon a carpeted
surface.
Avoidmoist or humidlocations.
Avoidinstallationin extremelyhot or cold
locations,or an areathat isexposedto
directsunlightor heatingequipment.
Donot obstructthe ventilationslotson the
top of the unit,or placeobiectsdirectly
overthem.
Cleaning
Whenthe unit getsdirty,wipeit with a clean,
soft,dry cloth,if necessary,wipeit with a soft
cloth dampenedwith mildsoapywater,thena
freshclothwithcleanwater.Wipeimmediately
with adrycloth. NEVERusebenzene,aerosol
cleaners,thinner,alcoholor anyvolatiledean-
ingagent.Donot useabrasivecleaners,asthey
maydamagethefinish of metalparts.Avoid
sprayinginsecticidenearthe unit.
Unpacking
Thecartonand shippingmaterialsusedto pro-
tect yournewreceiverduringshipmentwere
speda[[ydesignedto cushionit fromshockand
vibrafion.We suggestthat yousavethe carton
andpackingmaterialsfor usein shippingif you
move,or shouldthe unit everneedrepair.
Tominimizethe sizeof the cartoninstorage,
youmaywishto flatten it.Thisisdonebycare-
fully slitting thetapeseamson thebottom,and
collapsingthe cartondown to amoretwo-
dimensionalappearance.Othercardboard
insertsmaybestoredinthe samemanner.
Packingmaterialsthatcannotbe collapsed
shouldbe savedalongwith thecartonin a
plasticbag.
Ifyoudo notwishto savethe packagingmate-
rials,pleasenotethatthe cartonand othersec-
tions ofthe shippingprotectionarerecydable.
Pleaserespectthe environmentanddiscard
thosematerialsata local recyclingcenter.
Moving the Unit
Beforemovingthe unit,becertainto discon-
nectanyinterconnectioncordswith othercom-
ponents,and makecertainthat youdisconnect
the unitfrom theACoutlet.
IMPORTANTNOTE:To avoiddamageto the
DVD50 that maynot becoveredby thewar-
ranty,be certainthat all discsareremovedfrom
the unitbeforeit is moved.Oncethe DVD50 is
installed,discsmaybeleft in theunit when it
isturnedoff, but the unit shouldNEVERbe
movedwith discsleft in anyof the positionsof
the disctray.
Important Information for the User
Thisequipmenthasbeentestedand foundto

Thelimits aredesignedto providereasonable

Playbackof DTSaudiodiscsrequiresconnec-
tion to a processoror receiverwith aDTS
decoder.
PlaybackcapabilityforCD-RWdiscsmay
varydueto variationsin thequality of the
CD-RWdisc andthe recorderusedto create
the disc.
Sincetheysharesomeofthe characteristicsand
technologyof CDplayers,manyof the terms
andoperationalconceptsusedin a DVDplayer
aresimilartowhat youmaybefamiliarwith
from CDplayersandchangers,or oldervideo
discformatssuchasLaserDisc.However,if this
isyourfirst DVDproduct,someof the terms
usedto describethe featuresof a DVDplayer
maybe unfamiliar.Thefollowing explanations
shouldsolvesomeof the mysteriesof DVD,and
helpyouto enjoyall the powerand flexibilityof
the DVDformatand the DVD50.
Aspect Ratio:Thisisa descriptionof the
width of a video imagein relationto itsheight.
A conventionalvideoscreenisfour unitswide
for everythreeunitsof height,makingit almost
square.Newerwide-aspect-ratiovideodisplays
are 16unitswidefor everynine unitsof height,
makingthemmorelikethe screeninamovie
theater.Theprogrammaterialon a DVDmaybe
recordedin eitherformatand,in addition,you
mayconfigurethe DVDSOto playbackin
eitherformat,dependingon thefeatures
recordedon adisc.
Chapter: DVDprogramsaredividedinto chap-
tersandtitles.Chaptersarethe subsections
programmedinto asingletitJeon adisc.
Chaptersmaybecomparedto the individual
trackson anaudioCD.Pressthe Menubutton
to seea listingof thechaptersona disc.
ComponentVideo:Thisisa newform of
videosignalthateliminatesmanyof the arti-
factsof traditionalcompositevideosignalsby
splitting the signalinto a separateluminance
channelandtwo colordifferencesignals.With a
componentvideoconnection,youwi[[ see
greaterpictureresolutionandeliminatemany
pictureimperfectionssuchas the moir6pat-
ternsoftenseenoncheckedpatternedcloths.
However,in orderto benefitfrom component
videoyou musthavea videodisplaywith
Y/Pr/Pbcomponentvideoinputs.Donot
connectthe componentvideooutputsof the
DVDSOto the standardcompositeor S-Video
inputsofa TVor recorder.

Multiple Angle: DVDshavethe capabilityto
showup to fourdifferentviewsof the same
scenein a program.Whenadiscisencoded
with multiple-angleinformation,pressingthe
Anglebutton will enableyouto switchbetween
thesedifferentviews.Notethat,at present,few
discstakeadvantageof thiscapabilityand,
when theydo,the multiple-angletechnology
mayonlybe presentfor short periodsof time
within the disc.Producerswill usuallyinsert
somesortof iconor graphicin the pictureto
alertyouto the availabilityof multiple-angle
scenes.
Reading:Thisisamessagethat youwill see
when youfirst pressthe Playbutton. [trefersto
thefact thatthe playermustfirst examinethe
contentsof the discto seewhetherit is aCDor
DVD,and thenextractthe informationabout
thetypeof materialon the disc,suchaslan-
guages,aspectratios,subtitles,numberof titles
andmore.Theslightdelaywhile thecontentsof
thediscarereadisnormal.
Resume:Theoperationofthe Stopbutton on
theDVDSOworksdifferentlyfromwhat you
areusedto on CDplayers.Ona traditionalCD
player,when youpressthe Stopbutton,the unit
doesjustthat: it stopsplayback.Ona CDplayer,
when youpressthe Startbutton again,the disc
startsfrom the beginning.With the DVD50,
however,you havetwooptionswhenplaying
DVDdiscs.PressingStoponcewill stopthe
playback,but it actuallyputsthe unit inthe
Resumemode.Thismeansthat you canturn
themachineoff and,whenyoupressPlaythe
nexttime,the discwill resumeor continuefrom
thepoint onthe discwherethe Stopbutton
was pressed.Thisishelpfulif youarewatching
amovieandmustinterruptyourviewingses-
sionbut wish to pickup whereyou left off.
Pressingthe Stopbutton twicewill stopthe
machinein atraditionalmannerand,when
thediscis playedagain,it will startfromthe
beginning.

DVD50. However,regardlessof the complexity
of yoursystem,the installationguidelineson
pages14-17 shouldalwaysbefollowedto
ensurea safeinstallationand reliableoperation
of the product.
Important Note: To preventpossibledamage
to yourspeakersor othercomponentsinyour
homeentertainmentsystem,we stronglyrec-
ommendthatALLsystemcomponents,indud
ingthe DVD50, beturnedoff and unplugged
from theirAC powersourcewhenanyconnec-
tionsaremadeor a newcomponentis
installed.
Placementof the DVDSO
Sincethe lasertransportmechanismand
carouseltrayin the DVD50areprecision
componentsdesignedand manufacturedto
exacttolerances,theyaresubjectto interfer-
encefromvibration.Tominimizethe possibility
of skippingduringplayback,it is recommended
that the unit beplacedon alevel,solid,
vibration-freesurface.
Wheninstallingthe DVD50 ina cabinetor
tight space,alwaysmakecertainthat thereis
enoughroomin front of the unit forthe disc
trayto openfully,andthat there isenough
spaceabovethe unit sothat discsmayeasily
be insertedinto thespacesin the tray.
Asthe discdrawerextendsoutabout sixinches
from thefront of the unitwhen it isopen,you
shouldalsomakecertainthat thereissufficient
clearanceinfront ofthe unit to accommodate
the discdrawerwithout it bumpinginto other
objectsor getting inthe wayof anyonewalking
infront of the unit.

DVD50 not beplacedinalocationthatis sub-
jectto directsunlightor extremeheator cold,
astheseconditionsmaydamagethe discsused

generatesignificantheat.Forthat reason,do

tion, dueto the higherpicturequality.

Macrovisionencodingon mostDMDdiscs

Remote Control Operation
TheDVD50'sremotecontrolcontainsall of the
codesneededto operatethe product.Inaddi-
tion, it offersa builtqnbackHghtthatmaybe
usedto identifythe remotebuttonswhenthe
remoteisusedin [owdevellightingconditions.
Aguideto the operationofthe remote'sfunc-
tions isfoundin this manualon page 11.
Batteries
Beforeusingthe remote,insta]ltheAA batteries
providedwith the productbyturningthe
remoteoverand movingthe smalllatchon the
bottomin thedirectionof the arrow.After the
latchisloosened,flip thecoverupand then
removeit. installthe two batteriesasshown
here,beingcarefulto observethe "+" and"-"
polarityindicationsfor properplacementof the
batteriesin theircompartment.Replacethe
batterycoverbyfirst slidingthe two teethon
the coverinto theirmatchingslotstowardsthe
top of the remote.Then,gentlypressdownon
the coveruntilthe latchfirmly snapsinto place.
Theremoteisnow readyfor operation.
NOTE:Whenreplacingbatteries,it alwaysa
good ideato replaceboth at the sametime.
Whenthe remotewill not beusedfor an
extendedperiodof time,it is alsoa goodidea
to removethe batteriesto avoidthe possibility
of damagedueto corrosion.Batteriescontain
chemicalsubstancesandwe recommendthat
youdisposeof themproperlyandin compliance

Ifthe backlightdoesnot light,or if the
remotecontrol unitfails to work evenwhenit
isoperatednearthe player,replacethe batter-
ies.Whenreplacingthe batteries,do not mix
old and newbatteries;alwayschangebothcells
at the sametime.
Alwaysdisposeof usedbatteriesin anenvi-
ronmentallysafemannerand in compliance
with anylocalregulations.
Do notuserechargeable(Ni-Cd)batteries
anddo not attemptto recharge,short<ircukor
disassemblethe batteries.
Ifthe remotecontrolunit isnot goingto be
usedfor an extendedperiodof time, remove
the batteries.Otherwise,electrolytemayleak
whichmayleadto malfunctionsaswell as
damageto the remote,which isnot coveredby
the warranty.
Shouldanyelectrolyteleakfrom thebatter-
iesinsidethe remotecontrolunit, wipeit away
but avoidanycontact.If anyelectrolyteshould
comeinto contactwith yourskin,washit off
thoroughlywithwater.
SystemDefaults
Thefind step of the installationisto establish
the system'sdefaults.Thefactorysettingsfor
the unit will accommodatemostrequirements,
soit isnot essentialthat they bechanged.
Ifyouwishto immediatelyplaya disc,proceed
to page26. However,it is helpfulto take afew
minutesto familiarizeyourselfwith theseset-
tings,asthey mayrequirechangefromtime
to time.
Beforeusingthe DVDSOfor the first time,
makecertainthat the unit is properlyconnected
to anyaudio/videocomponentsit will beused
with, asdescribedonthe previouspages.When
the installationisdone,makecertainthat the
batteriesareproperlyinstalledin the remote
andthat the unit ispluggedinto anACpower
source.
Thefirst stepin checkingor changingthesys-
temdefaultsisto accessthe SetupMenu.First,
makecertainthat the DVD50is properlycon
nectedto a videodisplay,andthat poweris
connected.Forthis process,however,youdo
not needto loadanydiscsintothe unit.
Inorderto proceedwith the DVDSO'ssetup,
first turnon yourtelevisionor videodisplay,
alongwith anyAVreceiveror surroundproces-
sorthat is usedinconjunctionwith the
DVD50.Makecertainthat thosedevicesare
setto the correctaudioand videoinputsfor
usewith the DVD50. [fyouhavenot already
doneso,plug the AC Power Cord _) into a
wall output or surgeprotector/powerstrip.
Whenthe powerisfirstconnectedto the
DVD50,thefrontpanelInformation Display[]
will welcomeyouwith a HELLO DVD 5[3
messageand the DVD50 screenwill appearin
yourvideo display.TheDVD50will then
attemptto seewhetherthereareany discsin
the machine,eventhoughthis isthe first time it
isbeingused.Sincethereareno discsin the
player,a NO DISC messagewill appearin
both theon screendisplayand inthe
informationDisplay,andthe discnumbers
insidethe DiscNumber Indicators [] will
go out as eachpositionin theloadingtrayis
examinedandfound to be empty.Itis not nec-
essaryto loadanydiscsinthe machineat this
time to startthe setupprocess.
Toaccessthe SetupMenu,pressthe Menu
Button _ on the remote.TheSetupMenu
will appearon the videodisplayscreenas
shownin Figure1.Theleft sideof the screen
will showthevariousoptions,andthe box
on the rightsideof thescreenwill showthe
currentdefaults.

TheDVD50enablesyouto controlthe discs
that areviewedbysettinga ratingslevel.When
a dischasa ratinglevelgreaterthanthe
default, itwill not play.Tofurther protect
againstunauthorizedviewingof restricteddiscs,
the ratings-leveloption maybelockedsothat
onlyauthorizedpersons(suchasaparent)may
changetherating levelaftera passwordis
entered.
Theratingssystemisdependenton information
encodedinto the DVDdiscbeingplayedand,
althoughmostmovieshavean MPAAor other
ratingsymbol,the disc mayor maynot contain
that ratingin itssoftware.Inadditionto the
five MPAAratingsof G, PG,PGq3, Rand
NC-17,the DVD50will accommodateatotal
of eight ratingssteps,assetbythecreatorsof
the DVDformat.Theseadditionalstepsallow
for morecriticalcontrolof programplaybackfor
all audiences.
Toselectthe permittedratingsvalues,youmust
beviewingthe SetupMenu(Figure1),whichis
availablebypressingthe Menu Button
while the unit is inthe Stopmode.At theSetup
Menu,pressthe • Navigation Buttoo t_
untilthe Ratingoption ishighlighted.

Toseta passwordor lock the password
system,youmustbeviewingthe SetupMenu
(Figure1),which isavailablebypressingthe
Meoo Bottoo I_) while theunit isin the
Stopmode.At the SetupMenu,pressthe
Navigation Buttoo _ until the Password
option ishighlighted.
Toentera password,pressthe Navigation
Button_ andnotethatthe list of system
defaultswill be replacedwitha newMenu
Screen(Figure6).Toentera password,checkto
makecertainthat the word"Set" appearsto
the rightof an orangecircleand thenpressthe
