Replacing the
1394 Card
The 1394 card (also known
as IEEE 1394) has a high-
speed serial bus that allows
for simultaneously
connecting up to 63
devices. The 1394 card fits
into a Peripheral
Component Interconnect
(PCI) slot on the system
board.
It is widely used for
attaching video devices to
the computer.
Introduction
Your Compaq Internet PC has an Easy Access panel that
makes accessing the internal parts easy. This document
contains instructions for removing and replacing the 1394
card (see Figure 1-1).

Tools Needed
A Phillips screwdriver is needed to remove and replace the
1394 card.
Warranty Statement
Compaq provides these detailed instructions to ensure your
safety and to keep your PC from being damaged. Following
these instructions also ensures that your PC remains
warranted by Compaq.
Your replacement part is warranted for the longer of 90 days
from the date the part was delivered to you, or the original
One Year Limited Warranty that came with your Compaq
Presario.
Preparing Your Computer for Disassembly
Before beginning the removal and replacement procedure,
complete the following procedure:
1. Remove any diskette or compact discs (CDs) from the
computer.
2. Turn off the computer and any peripheral devices
connected to your computer.
3. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet, and
then from the computer (see Figure 1-2).
4. Disconnect all peripheral device cables from the computer.
Failure to disconnect the power from the computer may
result in personal injury.

I. Disconnecting the Power
1. To shut down your computer, click the Start button, and
then click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows dialog
box is displayed. Click OK to turn the computer off.
2. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet 1
and 2 computer (see Figure 1-2).
Failure to disconnect the power from the computer may
result in personal injury.

You do not have to replace the
screw securing the side access
panel. The screw securing the
side panel is used for shipping
purposes only.

II. Opening the Side Access Panel
1. Remove the screw 1 securing the side access panel.
Locate the latch 2 directly below the screw, press the latch
down, and hold it in the down position (Figure 2-1).

2. Grab the handle and slide the side panel from the chassis
(see Figure 2-2).
Caution: Before doing any work inside your computer, ground
yourself by touching a metal part of the chassis.

Look at the replacement part
carefully to help you identify
and locate the component to
be replaced.
Tip
III. Identifying and Locating the 1394 Card
Use the illustration to identify and locate the following items:
the 1394 card 1, the PCI system board slot 2, and the rear
connector slot 3 (see Figure 3-1).

Important: The number of PCI slots may vary by model. The replacement
1394 card may differ slightly from the original card.

IV. Removing the 1394 Card
1. Turn the computer on its side (open side facing up), and
locate the 1394 card.
2. Disconnect the Front I/O and the power cable (4 pin
connector) from the 1394 card (see Figure 4-1).

3. Remove the screw 1 securing the 1394 card, and save it
for your replacement card (see Figure 4-2).
Important: Keep the screw that secured the defective card to the
chassis. You will need it for your replacement card.
4. Pull the 1394 card using a gentle rocking (side-to-side)
motion from the PCI slot 2 on the system board
(see Figure 4-2).

Note: Save all the packing materials received with your replacement card.
You will need them to return the defective part.
1. Align the 1394 card with the PCI slot 1 on the system
board and with the expansion card rear connector slot on
the chassis (see Figure 5-1).

2. The 1394 card rear connector(s) 1 must be inserted
properly into the expansion card rear connector slot 2 to
ensure the card will seat properly into the PCI slot on the
system board (see Figure 5-2).
Note: Carefully insert the rear connector(s) on the 1394 card inside the
expansion card rear connector slot on the chassis.

3. Carefully and firmly press the 1394 card into the PCI slot.
4. Replace the screw 1 to secure the 1394 card to the chassis
(see Figure 5-3).

5. Reconnect the Front I/O 1 and the power 2 cable (4 pin
connector) to the 1394 card (see Figure 5-4).

VI. Replacing the Side Access Panel
Align the tabs on the top and bottom of the side access panel
with the slots (located on the top and bottom edge) on the
chassis and slide the side access panel into place
(see Figure 6-1).

VII. Checking To See If the Replacement Part Is
Installed Properly
1. Reconnect the power cord to the computer and then to the
electrical outlet.
2. Reconnect all peripheral device cables to the computer.
3. Turn on the computer using the power button and verify
that the replacement part is properly installed
(see Figure 7-1).

VIII. Returning the Defective Part
Please refer to the Compaq Part Return Instructions that came
with your replacement part for instructions on returning the
