Chapter 2:About USB
USB, which is short for Universal Serial Bus, is a technology designed to
make connecting devices to computers easier. First developed in 1996 by a
group of computer industry leaders that included Compaq, Digital, IBM, Intel,
Microsoft, NEC, and Northern Telecom, USB is one of the most widely used
technologies for users who want to add peripherals to their computers.
USB is unique because it is Plug-and-Play, which allows a computer to instant-
ly recognize when a device like a keyboard, mouse, or scanner has been con-
nected to it. Once the device has been recognized, it’s ready to go—no special
setup is required. Similarly, USB supports hot-swapping, the insertion or
removal of devices while the computer is turned on. You can swap one device
for another without having to power down your system or install any special
software—it really is that easy.
The USB 1.1 standard supports two speed modes, 1.5 and up to 12Mbps. The
newest USB standard, USB 2.0, supports three speed modes: 1.5, 12, and up to
480Mbps. The new USB 2.0 devices are fully backward compatible with earli-
er USB devices. USB 2.0 offers you increased functionality and additional
bandwidth, allowing you to add more peripherals to your computers.
The USB icon marks a USB port on a PC or device.

Chapter 3: Getting to Know the
USB 4-Port Hub
The Hub’s USB and power ports are located on the back panel.
USB Ports
1-4 USB ports 1-4 are Type A connectors. Connect the USB cables
from your USB peripherals to these ports.
USB The remaining USB port is a Type B connector. Connect the
USB cable from your USB-equipped computer to this port.
Power Port Plug the power adapter into this power port.

The USB 4-Port Hub comes with one USB cable. One end of the USB cable
has a rectangular connector called a Type A connector. The other end of the
cable has a square Type B connector. The USB cable’s Type B end connects to
the USB device (in this case, the USB 4-Port Hub). The Type A end connects
to a computer’s USB port.
Figure 2-3 shows two USB ports as they might appear on your
computer. Note the two USB icons marking the ports.

Chapter 4:Installing the USB
4-Port Hub
1. Plug the power adapter into the electrical outlet.
2. Plug the power adapter into the power port of the USB 4-Port Hub.
3. For connection to the PC, plug the Type B connector of the included USB
cable into the Hub’s USB Type B port.

is connected to a specific port and there is activity, the associat-
ed LED will light up.

Appendix A:Troubleshooting
This chapter provides solutions to problems that may occur during the installa-
tion and operation of the USB 4-Port Hub. Read the descriptions below to help
solve your problems. If you can’t find an answer here, check the Linksys web-
site at www.linksys.com.
1.I plugged a device or other hub into the USB 4-Port Hub and it doesn’t work.
Verify that all of your cabling is connected properly.
Then verify that you are using an operating system that supports USB.
Windows 95 and NT do not support USB, and some versions of UNIX-based
operating systems do not support USB.
If you are connecting a device into the Hub via a serial-to-USB or parallel-
to-USB converter, make sure that the device does not require any more than
500 mA of power. 500 mA is the maximum a mount of power that a USB
port can supply. Any device that needs more than 500 mA of power cannot
be accessed through a USB port.
2.The computer doesn’t recognize the USB 4-Port Hub or any other USB device.
The operating system has to support USB. Windows 98, 2000, Millennium,
and XP all support USB.
The USB ports on your PC may be disabled in the BIOS. Use the BIOS menu
to enable them.
3.When I unplug a device and connect it to a different port on the Hub, the device
is re-detected and I have to reinstall the drivers.
This is normal in most cases. Every time a device is connected to a specific
port on the Hub for the first time, the drivers for that device must be reinstalled.

4. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the PC’s USB port.
The computer’s operating system will install the appropriate driver automat-
ically. You may be asked to supply your original Windows CD installation
files, which include all necessary drivers and files. Linksys does not provide
any drivers.
5. Using additional USB cables, plug your USB peripherals into the Hub.
Then follow the installation instructions that accompanied your USB
devices.
The installation of the USB 4-Port Hub is complete.

boards and other devices automatically without requiring the user to turn off
the system during installation.
USB (Universal Serial Bus) - A “plug-and-play” interface between a computer
and peripherals, such as digital cameras, scanners, game controllers, speakers,
keyboards, portable data storage, or printers. With USB, you can add a new
peripheral to your computer without having to add an adapter card or powering
down the computer. USB also supports hot-swapping, the addition or removal
of devices while the computer is running.
USB 1.1-compliant devices support data rates of 1.5Mbps (low-speed) and up
to 12Mbps (full-speed). USB 2.0-compliant devices are backward compatible
with earlier USB devices, and they support data rates of 1.5Mbps (low-speed),
12Mbps (full-speed), and up to 480Mbps (high-speed).
